A great interpreter of Stones songs, who earned his place in Blues Heaven by orchestrating Muddy Waters great third act - Hard Again, I'm Ready, and King Bee, as well as the live album. Bravo! I only saw Johnny once but he's a HELLA slide player. Hey, where's Factory Girl? She's the biggest Johnny Winter fan I know! |

What a fucking great picture FPM!!
Jimi playing a regular bass (right handed) but as lefty so with all the strings and notes reversed, he did the same one night at the Fillmore East after a show of Steve Miller Band, he jammed with Leslie West (Mountain) and he played a bass, the same way, a regular bass played backwards, I have a picture of this night in the Mountain's biography "Nantucket Sleighride" by Leslie and Corky Laing Happy birthday Johnny! I saw him playing the shortest show he did ever, just two songs! It was in 1977 in Pachuca some weeks after a cancelled show in Temixco, Cuernavaca, a long story but anyway I enjoyed travelling two hours to see two songs by Johnny! |

Right you are FPM.
John Dawson Winter III was singularly responsible for the resurgence in Muddy Waters career in the late 70's, with that troika of terrific albums. He's coming to our area in June, I am going to try to go to see him again. First caught him in '76, with Foghat opening, terrific show. Last caught him two years ago, in a small club. He has to be assisted on stage now, he plays sitting down exclusively. He still has IT. |

And Jimi looks BORED! Hahaha! When I saw Johnny he only played ONE song, because it was at the Dylan tribute at MSG in '92, but it was a great one. He played "Highway 61" and peeled the paint offa the joint! I've never heard such NASTY slide in my life! |

Go! He's doing much better now. A couple of weeks ago he walked on & off unassisted. Still sits mostly, but stood up for It's All Over Now. |

one. He played "Highway 61" and peeled the paint offa the joint! I've never heard such NASTY slide in my life! " Wow, that must have been fantastic! IMO he's nothing short of a national treasure. When we arrived at the venue, I spied a "Club America" Winnebago type vehicle right up front. Immediately, I turned to my wife & said "I bet this is his touring vehicle:. Sure enough, from a distance, one could see him in this. It was a bit sad, and I was fearing the worst for the show, as I'd read he got taken over the coals by a former manager. Curtain call-he is ushered out, handed a guitar, and man could he still play. He was joined later by harp great James Montgomery, the two tore it up. The highlight of the night was when he was handed that Gibson Firebird, and he played a note for note version of "Bony Maronie", from Captured Live. It was one of those music moments in life... |

JOHNNY WINTER BATTLES BACK FROM DECADES OF SUBSTANCE ABUSE
by: Sterling Whitaker Yesterday Rick Diamond, Getty Images Legendary guitarist Johnny Winter doesn’t just play the blues, he’s lived them. The iconic blues rock guitarist has battled his addictions to drinking and drugs off and on since his commercial heyday in the ’70s, but in a new interview he says he is finally clean and sober and ready to rock. “Heroin was the hardest thing that I ever had to go through,” Winter tells Classic Rock Revisited. “It was worth it to go through it and get clean. I am not taking any drugs and I am not drinking. I am not smoking cigarettes anymore and I am not doing anything bad. I never thought this would be possible. I never thought I would see the day that I didn’t have any vices at all.” It was a long, hard path to sobriety for Winter, who places some of the blame on his former manager for keeping him apart from the people in his life, including his brother Edgar Winter. “He died right after I fired him. He couldn’t have done anything else because he was a horrible alcoholic. There wasn’t any reason for him to stay alive,” Winter maintains. His new manager, Paul Nelson, made it his priority to see the guitarist conquer his demons when he took over managing him six years ago. As a result, Winter has experienced a career resurgence culminating in the release of last year’s ‘Roots’ album, which features guest appearances by John Popper from Blues Traveler, Sonny Landreth, Warren Haynes, Vince Gill and Susan Tedeschi. He recently released a DVD titled ‘Live from Japan,’ and he’s planning a second ‘Roots’ album that he hopes will feature Mark Knopfler, Billy Gibbons, Eric Clapton and Gregg Allman. Winter says his motivation for staying healthy is to keep on playing. “I don’t want to retire from something I love to do. If I got unhealthy and couldn’t play anymore, then I would stop, but that is the only thing that could ever make me stop.” http://ultimateclassicrock.com/johnny-winter-battles-back-from-decades-of-substance-abuse/ |

Happy Birthday, Johnny Winter!! One of my favorite guitar players! Rock and Roll Hoochie Koo!!
JW, your playing is so fucking primal! Love you, Man!! Why the fuck Mr. Johnny Winter not in Rock Roll Hall of Fame?....in my view, that is an unbridled injustice. |

I'm glad he's doing o.k. too, I always wondered what happened to him, now I know, I always figured he went back to the Blues scene, & became more of that then Rock, he's helped a lot of the Blues greats.
