Title: Stones rule out Olympics performance - again!
Post by Gazza on Feb 10th, 2012 at 12:40pm
This is the original story which appeared in today's Evening Standard, suggesting that the Stones are being lined up to play at a 'Best of British' concert at Hyde Park on August 12th to mark the end of the Olympics

http://www.thisislondon.co.uk/standard-olympics/article-24034498-stones-in-talks-over-olympics-concert.do

...quickly followed by a denial from Stones' spokesman Bernard Doherty

http://www.nme.com/news/the-rolling-stones/61967

"Contrary to a totally inaccurate report in the London Evening Standard today, The Rolling Stones wish to point out that they are not performing at any concerts tied to the 2012 Olympic Games in Hyde Park or The Olympic Park."

I don't know why...but I am actually
glad they are not doing the Olympics...

I don't think they would be crowd ready by that time ( let alone WORLD ready).

When they did the Super Bowl, they already had 5 months of live shows
as well as a month  plus of rehearsal time under their belts.

If they have to have ANY Stones...make it The STONE ROSES!!!

Yeah I heard this rumor about the Stones doing an Olympic appearance about a year ago, and Gazza pointed out at that time it wouldnt happen. I thought it sounded like a good idea since there is already a big spotlight on London and the entire world will see the one of the oldest and finest rock and roll band the UK has given to the world. London IS all about history, after all! Since MICK is a knight I thought this would be something impressive, another jewel in his crown. Oh yeah, he dont need no jewels in his crown!

I think I just said it was unlikely and them not playing it was more a personal wish than anything else. I think they should be nowhere near it - that's more because I'm a bit of a traditionalist as far as the Stones go - I wouldnt want them being the cabaret at the Superbowl either.  And as much as I love the Stones and am glad that London got the Olympics, the Stones don't exactly reflect youth and athleticism  anymore. If we're showcasing music at the Olympics, I'm not so sure it should be a bunch of wizened near-septuagenarians - no matter how great they are.

I agree with you Gazza; the Stones arent ever so young, so  for do a good show they need of some months playing together before to do anything.
I would  be very glad to see them on a World Tour.. but in very close arenas.. they arent ever good for the big circus of the stadiums.

Agreed. The Stones, while multi-millionaires and are some what cultural icons have always been .."anti-establishment"... and rebellious through-out their career. That's common knowledge. They are not a family band or world humanitarians by reputation. In fact... being anti-establishment and rebellious (rocks bad-boys)  was major in their attraction and stigma. Every knows that much. Why would they now play for the establishment (it's bad enough that Micks been knighted). In the 60's and 70's this would be the most silly thought. Regardless of their age, why play into a hand that you have built the better part of your 50 year career aside from. It simply wouldn't be seen as a "cool thing" for them and it would let their die-hards (and others) down. They are not U2...or Bonjovi... or Celine Dion... they are The Stones. Even at this age it would be hugely disappointing to their fans and to many. It's not their "bag" to do something like this and I am glad even at this age they realize it. They got away with playing The Superbowl. That was enough... I mean ... take a look at their logo in my profile.. I can't see a match to The Olympics.. and thankfully they know them playing The Olympics would also be seen as completely "corny".

They've done a lot cornier things than that ("Days of our Lives", anyone? Corporate gigs for bankers?).  I don't see playing the Olympics as being an 'establishment' thing at all - its just got nothing to do with rock n roll. However, Neil Young played at the closing ceremony for the Winter Olympics, and he's far less mainstream than the Stones are. Jagger's been pro-active in the Olympic movement in the past, too.

I think we'll agree to disagree on the Stones being 'rebellious' or 'anti establishment'. They haven't been like that for decades, although a lot of their fans seem to cling to the idea that they are. For every Stones fan who thinks that playing the Olympics or Super Bowl is cheesy, there are probably several more who would consider the idea to be pretty 'cool'.

I remember the "Days Of Our Lives" episode ( do they show that in UK?) There's a guy and a girls sorta making out on the couch...and on TV, the world premier
of the new rolling Stones Single...just as he is about to grab some boobage, she slaps it away,
and says something like " Jimmy! Cut it out...IT's THE NEW VIDEO BY THE ROLLING STONES!"...
and they cut to a 20 sec spot of STREETS OF LOVE ( I think that was the song, wasn't it?)

ANYWAY...IMO the difference between the superbowl and the Olympics is that
the SB is ICONIC...the Olympics are TRADITIONAL...like Gazza said...nothing to do with
Rock W Roll...the SB is all glitz and commercialism...

The Superbowl may come to Wembley sometime this decade...the only thing holding it back is time zone logistics...

There was an episode called 'The Rolling Stones concert'. Be warned, watching this the whole way through may induce Exorcist-level projectile vomiting.

'Days of Our Lives' to show Stones video

NEW YORK (AP) -- The soap opera "Days of Our Lives" will celebrate its 40th anniversary by airing the world premiere of the Rolling Stones video "Streets of Love."

"I can't imagine a more exciting way to celebrate the 40th landmark year of 'Days of Our Lives' than with the Rolling Stones," Sheraton Kalouria, senior vice president, NBC Daytime Programs, said in a statement.

The "Streets of Love" video will air Tuesday. "Days of Our Lives" will use the song as a soundtrack to some scenes for the next four weeks.

"Days of Our Lives" premiered on Nov. 8, 1965. The Rolling Stones, who have been touring for 40 years, have a new album, "A Bigger Bang."

"With 'Days of Our Lives' also celebrating its 40th anniversary ... the show was the perfect vehicle for promoting the Rolling Stones and their latest single," said Randy Miller, Virgin Records' executive vice president, marketing.

Stones would love to play at the Games, says Ronnie Wood

Alistair Foster, Showbusiness Correspondent
Updated 11:38am on 14 Feb 2012

Ronnie Wood told how he would love to perform for the Olympics - saying the gig would be a "once in a lifetime thing".

The Rolling Stones are celebrating their 50th anniversary this year. Guitarist Wood, 64, revealed that they had been in discussions about playing during the Games and in other concerts.

Speaking at the Elle Style Awards at the Savoy Hotel, Wood told the Standard last night: "Yeah, it would be fantastic. The Olympics coming to London is a once-in-a-lifetime thing and it would be too good an opportunity to miss."

Wood was a guest at the fashion magazine's annual awards, where model and actress Rosie Huntington-Whiteley was named top style icon. Christina Hendricks, who plays Joan Holloway in hit US show Mad Men, was named best TV star. Alexa Chung hosted the awards, which featured performances by Emeli Sandé with Professor Green.

THE Rolling Stones could perform at the London Olympic Games in July.

Guitarist Ronnie Wood let it slip that he has been in talks with Olympic officials to join the line-up for the opening ceremony.

Wood said he might also perform with his previous band.

"I've been asked to do the opening ceremony with the Stones and close the Games with The Faces," he told The Sun.

"I've got to be the first bi-athlete musician."

Slumdog Millionaire filmmaker Danny Boyle will direct the opening.

Sir Paul McCartney and Adele are among other rumoured acts.

British Music ‘Mashup’ At Olympic Closing Ceremony

08:01 AM, Thursday 2/23/12

The closing ceremony for 2012 London Olympics will be themed “A Symphony of British Music” – with organizers promising a hit-packed journey from classical composer Edward Elgar to Grammy soul diva Adele.

“It is, in a sense, the soundtrack of our lives,” said Stephen Daldry, executive producer of the Olympic and Paralympic opening and closing ceremonies.

The ceremony’s artistic director, Kim Gavin, said the Aug. 12 show would be an “elegant mashup of British music” packed with recognizable songs arranged symphonically. The London Symphony Orchestra will provide musical backing.

“We go from – without saying we’ve booked anyone – Elgar to Adele,” said music director David Arnold.

The creative team is keeping the names of the musicians involved under wraps, although The Rolling Stones, Paul McCartney and the Spice Girls have all been suggested as possible performers.

Olympic officials did not say whether Adele, Britain’s hottest musical export of the moment, had been asked to take part. The singer-songwriter’s album 21 has spent a full year on the charts, winning six Grammys earlier this month, including album of the year. Adele also won two trophies Tuesday at the Brit music awards.

Gavin, who has overseen tours for the band Take That and directed the 2007 Princess Diana memorial concert, said the London Olympics closing ceremony would be “the biggest after-show party – the show being the sport.”

Designer Es Devlin said the show, which will include 3,500 performers, would be a visual extravaganza drawing on icons of British art and design.

The games start July 27.
