Never seen this before, great find! (but no need for that Profanity in the description)  Mick supposedly wrote Brown Sugar when he was filming Ned Kelly, just a few months later here he is playing it to Ike & Tina.

Sorry about the profanity.  I was high on crack cocaine.

I was wondering about the timing, and whether Jagger could have been in possession of the basic song at that point.  Thanks for clearing it up.  Pretty amazing video, and seems to be real.  Mick Jagger!

No problem, Mick did Ned Kelly after Hyde Park, after that in Nov. the U.S. tour, he supposedly wrote the song in Australia while filming, I think he's the main songwriter, let's get Gazza in here to clear it up, & the Maysles's Bros. who did Gimme Shelter filmed it, outtakes from the movie, which Klein also released the other extra footage in the Ya Ya's box set, but never seen this, I wonder how much more there is.

Mick wrote 'Brown Sugar' when he was in Australia in summer 1969. One of the first songs where he also wrote the music as well.

This is presumably a 'Gimme Shelter' outtake.

The live debut of the song was a few days after this, at a certain free festival at a speedway in California.

Mick on writing it :

(thanks to timeisonourside.com)

I've written riffs that people assume are Keith's.) Brown Sugar. That was the first one I did. I've done many since.
- Mick Jagger, 1994

At the end of the '60s I had a little more time to sit around and play my guitar, writing songs rather than just lyrics for the first time. I'd written songs before then, but they were little things like Yesterday's Papers. Now I could take it more seriously. Brown Sugar was one of those songs. I wrote it in Australia, somewhere between Melbourne and Sydney, while I was in my trailer filming Ned Kelly - I had a whole bunch of time out there. I was simply writing what I wanted to write, not trying to test the waters. People are very quick to react to what you write, but I just write what comes into my head.
- Mick Jagger, 2003

I wrote that song in Australia in the middle of a field. They were really odd circumstances. I was doing this movie, Ned Kelly, and my hand had got really damaged in this action sequence. So stupid. I was trying to rehabilitate my hand and I had this new kind of electric guitar, and I was playing in the middle of the outback and wrote this tune. But why it works? I mean, it's a good groove and all that. I mean, the groove is slightly similar to Freddy Cannon, this rather obscure '50s rock performer - Tallahassee Lassie or something. Do you remember this? She's down in F-L-A. Anyway, the groove of that - boom-boom-boom-boom-boom - is going to a go-go or whatever, but that's the groove.
- Mick Jagger, 1995

Much as I'd love to hear the Stones play Robert Johnson's "Little Queen of Spades", that was the Rev Robert Wilkinson's "Prodigal Son" on the Gimme Shelter DVD.

The reasons I was worried it was fake were (1) timing and (2) could Jagger play guitar like that (then or ever), and (3) Jagger's face is never shown (at least on my screen).  With all the mash-biffs, anything is possible.

If real, what a cool clip!  Tina Tee get excited about the controversial lyrics, Jagger shows (as the best of us knew) that he wrote music too, and Magnum Ike is flaccid for once.

And, if nothing else, it shows that even whilst high on crack cocaine, I am the best poster that ever graced this yard.  Or at least upper echelon.  Stratospheric.  Superlative.  Deity sub rosa. Like an SAT score of 1580 or something in comparables.

There will come a day, I swear, when people shall know how beautiful life is, even when it comes to the smallest details, without people pointing directions.

This thread is about Jesus, anyhow?

I too was surprised Mick could riff on the old Fender  like that, as early as 1969.  But Moonie, you are showing your age man!  SATs go up to 2400 now.  1580 is community college level  :Youmakeagrownmancrylikejoey

Ike looks a little pissed or bothered by the song... He was so possesive of Tina, I get the impression he thinks the song is about Mick trying or wanting to fuck Tina, anyone else?

I'm sure Ike don't mind about Tina... it's because Mick tuned His guitar in open G =O)

for me the tuning goes a long way to explaining why, unless you know otherwise, you could be suprised that, musically, it's all mick's work... after all keith was doing it in right in front of him with powerful effect and he must have appreciated the potential it brought to guitar playing and songwriting

Perhaps instructive is that "Jagger" plays the intro to Brown Sugar on that bit.

Amazing stuff (to me).  Shades of Holy Grail.  Shades of Shockley (semiconductor).  Shades of Immaculate Lactation (see Jesus). Shades of Appomattox.

It's Amazing stuff to me too Sirmoonie! Thanks for sharing it & ThankX to the uploader! Mick could also have learned open G directly from Ry Cooder, just like Keith. It reminds me that the Glimmer Twins are equally talented... a real two heads monster!
