REPORTING FROM BERLIN -- For 50 years, the Rolling Stones have offended the sensibilities of squeamish types around the world. Next stop on the culture-clash tour: the small northern German town of Luechow.

The city's new Rolling Stones Fan Museum hasn't even opened, but it's already attracted controversy because of fixtures in its men's room -- specifically, mouth-shaped urinals.

The urinals are based on the band's famous logo, a pair of luscious open red lips with a tongue hanging out. The logo, created in 1971 by art designer John Pasche, was modeled after lead singer Mick Jagger's famously rubbery mouth.

But critics say the urinals convey a misogynistic message.

"There's been an outcry among the people -- about a dozen women have complained to me alone," Marianne Joensson-Olm, equal-opportunities officer in Luechow, told NDR, a Hamburg-based broadcast network.

"It's discrimination against women," said Roda Armbruster, a local feminist. If the urinals sported a tongue, "it would have been acceptable," because the identification with the band and Jagger would have been unmistakable, she said. Without it, "it's a woman's mouth, not a man's mouth."

The museum's founder, Ulrich Schroeder, denies that the fixtures represent a man's mouth or a woman's mouth or anyone's mouth.

"It’s art," he told the German daily Die Welt. "It's staying."

Women in the northern German town of Lüchow have expressed their dissatisfaction with the design of two urinals in the men's toilet of a museum dedicated to the Rolling Stones. They are shaped like red lips, similar to the legendary logo of the band, but they look more feminine, and they lack tongues.


Local activist Roda Armbruster wants the urinals removed. "That's discrimination against women," she told regional broadcaster NDR. "Why does it have to be a woman's mouth? If it had been based on the emblem of the Stones with the tongue, it would have been OK. But the tongue's been left out and they really looks like women's mouths."

Marianne Jönsson-Olm, the official in charge of women's issues in the Lüchow town administration, said: "An uproar has gone through the population -- around a dozen women came to me and complained."

Defiant and Unrepentant

The museum was opened last October by a retired banker, Ulli Schröder, 62, who has been collecting Stones memorabilia for decades.


His response to the criticism has been defiant and unrepentant. "That's not a man's mouth or a woman's mouth, that's art. They were damned expensive and they're staying where they are and that's final."

The urinals were designed by a woman, Dutch artist Meike van Schijndel, and have attracted controversy before. They were removed from a toilet in New York after complaints.

The town council subsidized the museum with €100,000. Lüchow's mayor, Hubert Schwedland, has been trying to mediate. "You can't argue about personal taste and art, everyone interprets it themselves and draws their own conclusions. People who don't like them should avoid them."

The large, lascivious tongue is key to the design’s intent — without it the symbolism changes “absolutely” as the tongue adds the “attitude to the logo and makes it a lot more in your face and not just about this pair of lips.”

While images of Stones urinals aren’t necessarily a new thing – Flickr has photos that date back several years to various urinals unassociated with this German museum – these toilets have sparked outrage, and in the process granted the museum a heap of publicity. The design is called “Kisses,” and comes from Meike van Schijndel, a Dutch designer, who sparked a similar controversy in 2004, when the urinals were to be installed at a terminal in New York City’s JFK airport.

Pache says that they could have went a step further in updating the functionality of the design. “It’s quite outrageous,” he says. “They could have also hinged the mouth of the toilet so it could also close in on you.” Even without that mechanical update though, patrons in Luechow are about to experience a whole new way of getting some sanitary satisfaction.
