Title: You Can't Always Get What You Want (RN'R Circus)
Post by StonesFan1990 on Jan 23rd, 2012 at 8:06pm
Does anyone prefer the rockier version of You Can't Always Get What You Want, as played at the Rolling Stones' Rock N' Roll Circus, to the studio version?

And also, at the Rock N' Roll Circus, is Brian also playing in the intro? Listening in headphones it sounds like two guitars in the right channel. Is Brian also playing the little intro with Keith, with his guitar a little lower in the mix than Keith's, or is it just a reverb from Keith's guitar?

I prefer the album version, it is a ballad, it's hard to say if Brian & Keith are playing together at the beginning, in the video both are playing, I believe it's in open E tuning, & there is a standard guitar tuning also, Brian is probably playing standard tuning & keith open.

I can only hear Brian playing on No Expectations (slide and very well done!) I don't hear him on the other songs; looks like they turned his guitar/amp sound down/switched it off....

Both Brian and Keith are tuned to standard tuning for R&R Circus, but Brian is tuned to open A for No Expectations.

Although Brian is shown playing during the intro of YCAGWYW on the officially released version, he's gently strumming a very simple 2 partial chord thing, you don't hear his guitar at the start, but it does creep through once they start rocking.  It seems Keith overdubbed a subtle electric guitar part for the intro, kinda similar to what Brian is shown playing, but not quite the same. Hence the 2 guitars you hear, the overdub adding bit of lower notes to the intro.

Brian's very simple part is more audible on an outtake version featuring Mick on acoustic guitar. No overdubs on that one. This outtake version is not the same take with overdubbed acoustic heard on 25x5, but an actual totally different performance.

Kind of crappy to do that to him. It was his last show, they should restore his playing on a future re-release. Also could you point me in the direction of the outtake where you can hear him on guitar?
Thing is...I know how Mick Taylor plays guitar because of the many great examples...But I have no clue how Brian played guitar, how his style was, how it differed from Keith and Taylor's, etc. I know how great he was on the mellotoron, dulcimer, sitar and other instruments, but I have no clue how his guitar playing sounded.

Could you or anyone else recommend me some songs where Brian is heavy on guitar, for example, where he plays a solo or a major part?
