I guess most of you know about this new Bill trying to be passed to censor the Internet, it's in the U.S. now but eventually could effect World Wide, a lot of sites are going black to protest it, for instance http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:SOPA_initiative/Learn_more

Here is the petition to protest it, I live in Canada so can't sign it.

I could be wrong but I think Obamas government is sponsoring this or simply the US Government.

SOPA — the Stop Online Piracy Act — has been presented in the House of Representatives as a way to protect movie studios, record labels and others whose music and films are taken and copied online. There was a hearing on it today. Its Senate counterpart is called the Protect IP Act.
But others are calling them flawed bills that would lead to Internet censorship.
Eric Schmidt, executive chairman of Google, said the bills would overdo it — giving copyright holders and government the power to cut off websites unreasonably. They could be shut down, and search engines such as Google, Bing and Yahoo could be stopped from linking to them.
“The solutions are draconian,” Schmidt said Tuesday at the MIT Sloan School of Management. “There’s a bill that would require ISPs [Internet service providers] to remove URLs from the Web, which is also known as censorship last time I checked.”
That said, Schmidt granted that Hollywood studios have a real problem — people are pirating their movies and threatening their business. The Motion Picture Association of America has posted promos on YouTube to plead its case.

Rep. Lamar Smith (R-Texas), who chairs the House Judiciary Committee and sponsored SOPA, has said his bill will help “stop the flow of revenue to rogue websites and ensures that the profits from American innovations go to American innovators.”
Now Tumblr, the microblogging website, has joined the opposition to the bills with a page called “Protect the Net.”
“As written, they would betray more than a decade of US policy and advocacy of Internet freedom,” said a statement on Tumblr, “by establishing a censorship system using the same domain blacklisting technologies pioneered by China and Iran.”

The MPAA is the real culprit...their outdated business models have BOX OFFICE tallies and DVD sales as the main
income maker...why they don't just look at
iTunes and realize the internet can make a shitload of money for you w/ virtually
no cost to them is beyond me...

DIRECT TO NET is the way to go...Paying $75.00 minimum for a family of 4 to go see a first run
disney movie has now become a luxury...w/ ticket prices at $10 bucks and a "family size popcorn" at around 7 bucks...add drinks, gas...parking...and whatever incidentals like a babysitter for the
one in diapers...and of course the after movie activities/snacks that pop up...you are at the $100.00 mark for what...CARS 4??

While it may be US legislation it will have an impact that runs throughout the world wide interwebs.

It can't be argued that there are competeing principles. As you say PA if those suffering from piracy got smart they could adapt to the changing market place. However, the rights they do have should (under law) be protected.

Though I haven't read the proposed legislation what I understand of it the powers granted go way beyond what is required to deal with the problem and the exercise of them would (could) have effects which do more than simply put the brakes on IP theft.

Last I heard (this morning's news) the legislature was starting to cool off on the whole thing.

Steely I think you are being hopeful if you think the internet will remain "the wild west".

[my address deleted]

Dear Paranoid Android:

Thank you for contacting me regarding H.R. 3261, the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA). Like you, I am opposed to this legislation in its current form.

As you know, the Stop Online Piracy Act aims to expand the ability of federal law enforcement to curb the distribution of illegal online content by shutting down websites and services that use counterfeited or pirated content created by U.S. firms. The bill also includes a provision that could hold third parties, such as payment-processing sites and Internet search engines, responsible for piracy and counterfeiting that occurs on other sites.  Companion legislation, the Preventing Real Online Threats to Economic Creativity and Theft of Intellectual Property Act (PROTECT-IP Act, or S. 968), is currently under consideration in the Senate.

I share your concerns about the impact SOPA could have on many websites and online businesses, which, under the bill as currently written, could face lawsuits o r have their sites shut down by the government for unknowingly hosting copyrighted content. I recognize that online piracy and counterfeiting is a real problem that should be addressed, but I believe we can address this problem without compromising the open and non-discriminatory nature of the Internet.  Since its inception, the Internet has allowed anyone with an Internet connection to access or provide information, goods, or services on a relatively equal footing.  This open design has been largely responsible for the revolutionary impact that the Internet has had on global commerce, innovation, information-sharing, and so many other aspects of our daily lives.

H.R. 3261 has been referred to the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Intellectual Property, Competition, and the Internet for consideration. In recent weeks, thanks to the effective advocacy of many online activists and organizations, opposition to the bill has grown exponentially as Americans have learned more about the far-reaching implications that SOPA could have.  I announced my opposition to the proposed bill several months ago on my Twitter account (which you may follow @RepDavidEPrice).  Most recently, in response to the website "blackout" campaign led by several major online entities on January 18, I released a statement reiterating my opposition, which you may read on my website at http://go.usa.gov/RLL.

Again, thank you for contacting me. As Congress debates Internet and intellectual property legislation in the future, I hope you will continue to stay in touch regarding your perspective.

Sincerely,

DAVID PRICE
Member of Congress

If you up/download you should use a VPN, it's also a great secuerity barrier from being hacked too...
The Millenium Copyright act already provides everything needed to prosecute online piracy. SOPA is wrong and is like building a bridge to nowhere... enforcing the laws in existence is all that is neccesary and going after ones that don't... Megaupload wasn't, and that is why they are down... Many don't want their material online being stolen... that is obvious, but there's alot of what net nuetrality is about, that offers us the freedom many like online. If I make a home video, and use or have background music, I shouldn't be prosecuted for srealing... not when many artists don't mind... those that do, can ask for it to be removed, using the millenium copyright laws... In all honesty, the lawmakers involved in this, are clueless... They are asking for nerd advice and help...  it's a legal issue, and just goes to show how uniformed lawmakers are... and how easily manipulated our system is by large money from the MPAA... There is a tom of money to be made using the internet and bandwidth... you don't want your first release movie stolen online, release it for sale online when it hits the theaters and make sure any sites hosting illegal content take it down... it actually happens, many usenet services remove content ASAP. The dinosaur companies in music, tv, movies have milked us for years... and have not properly adjusted and reinvested into the changing consumer base, despite being told and seeing new companies find ways to do it and be profitable... short version, fuck them!!! FUCK SOPA and fuck the uninformed!

I hate to bring up being uninformed, but a Democrat does oppose this and put the bill on hold in May 2011... Oregon Senator Ron Wyden (D)

"Why is there not a single Democrat or Independent on this list ?"

Becase the truth is now out, the Democrtas and the Obama Adminsitration love the idea of shutting down websites without a hearing or any due process.  In fact, today, the DOJ shut down Megaupload with no notice or hearing.  Hell, Obama doesn't need these two bills to pass to rule by decree!

I thought your area of expertise is intellectual property, so your knee-jerky "blame Obama" response oughta be a little more informed.

Maybe there are no Democrats on that list because it's a List Of Republicans. Opposition is bi-partisan, but that's a dirty word to some.

http://www.buzzfeed.com/jpmoore/3-democrats-you-can-thank-for-bailing-on-sopapipa

1. Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ)

2. Rep. Tim Holden (D-PA)

3. Rep. Nita Lowey (D-NY)

There are 23 Democrats on this list.

Obama's statement:

“While we believe that online piracy by foreign websites is a serious problem that requires a serious legislative response,” said the note, “we will not support legislation that reduces freedom of expression, increases cybersecurity risk, or undermines the dynamic, innovative global Internet.”

Seems like this case has been building since 2006. I forget who was in office then. Maybe you remember.
