What do you suppose the guy stacking pallets behind Charlie is thinking of these long-haired pretty boys?  :scary

Probably something similar to the producer of 'Thank Your Lucky Stars', the first TV show the Stones performed on :

The show's producer told the Stones manager he should "Get rid of that vile-looking lead singer with the tire-tread lips."

Or the The President of The National Federation Of Hairdressers who in 1964 offered a free haircut to the next No.1 group in the UK pop charts. He said, "The Rolling Stones are the worst, one of them looks as if he's got a feather duster on his head."

Probably thinking:

"Thems are some ugly birds, they are"

That is a cool header!

Just last night I was reading through Massimo Bonanno's Rolling Stones Chronicle.
Not sure if y'all have the book -- it is a must for those that love stupid Stones trivia.
It is essentially a day-to-day diary of the Stones.  My edition covers up to 1989 - not sure if it has been updated since.

The first couple of chapters, the early years, are really fascinating as you read the world's reaction to the introduction to the Stones, and so much of it is excatly the things we still love about them today.  The infectious sound, the visual look of the band, the way their fans packed into halls so tightly, they didn't have room to dance so they just twitched!!!  Great stuff.

On the first page, each Stone has a short biography and a quote.

Here is Mick's quote that blew me away last night - "I'll be keeping it up until my body starts to fall apart and that's a long time off.  The Rolling Stones might not last forever but we'll be going until sometime this side of ever."

Cool that we are on the verge of the 50th anny (with Sympathy as an opener)!

LOVE this header!! What an historical pic.... 8-)

I thought, at first glance, that the guy watching the Stones looked a bit like Andy Warhol... ;) :P

Love all the comments on this thread....:) I was an email "friend" of Massimo for a time, but lost touch with him. Love his books, and the Chronicle is really neat.  8-)

Thanks again for the header. I LOVE the shots from the 60's, and this is a pretty early one.... 8-)

I remember reading about the early Eal Pie Island days, in which the place was so crowded when the Stones played, everyone just jumped up and down....I think they named that "dance", but can't remember what they called it....

Great header. I keep staring at it in amazement.

All this talk of Massimo is so ironic.
I bought his latest book as a Xmas gift for a fellow mutant.
Book is so new that I actually ordered it off the publishers website www.lulu.com

Got a thank you email from the author himself!!
Nice touch; so I replied.
And he replied to me.

Everything in the Stonesian universe seems to be aligning quite nicely!!!!!
Bring on 2012!!!!!!

LJ.

Thanks for the info on Massimo.
I don't even recall where I got the book, but I have truly used it.
It is Pretty Beat Up.

Can't even imagine the effort it took to compile the detail he has in there.
I always dig it out when I get ripped :smoking and feel like re-acquainting myself with the band.
You know...now and then......

Confused as to where they are.  If it was London, why do they have suitcases?  (Man, whatever city it is, it looked awfully dingy.)  It also appears Charlie is the only one not carrying a case.  Hmmm.

Right!?

Imagine the 5 Stones just strolling with their bags down the street now!

Slightly different entourage (c0mpare and contrast):

And Ironic that Charlie, Keith & Mick are together...

A very neat photo.

Brian's the only one who's carrying what could be called a suitcase.

A quick google search shows that there's a "Donmar Theatre" in London's Covent Garden, although Covent Garden looks a lot nicer than the place in that photo.

And the wiki entry for it would suggest that its the same place as this photo, going by what it looks like now :

Theyve never played a concert in a theatre of that name, so it could be (as the name on the door suggests) they were just using it for rehearsing for maybe a radio or TV appearance. Its a very small venue.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Donmar_Warehouse

Theatrical producer Donald Albery formed the Donmar company in 1953, the name reputedly formed from the first three letters of the names Donald Albery and Dame Margot Fonteyn, the prima ballerina and a friend.

In 1961, Albery bought the site, a space that was once the vat room and hops warehouse of a brewery. He adapted it for use as a private drama studio and rehearsal room for Fonteyn's London Festival Ballet.

There's a reference in this feature on a Terry O'Neill photo exhibition to him taking photos of the Stones outside the Donmar Warehouse Theatre in 1963, so presumably it's from the same day as this photo :

Edit - just found this :

The photo can be all yours for £1,850!

Still a bargain at twice the price!!

It's one of those, the more you look at it, the more you see type photos.

I am amazed at how feminine Mick looks (and it isn't 1975, so presumably he wasn't trying to).  Very "Have You Seen Your Mother" look with the hair length and a coat that looks kind of like a dress.

Brian has a "suitcase in his hand" with more stains on it than Joey's underwear.

I don't know, but I'm glad they did! ;D

Thanks for all the info about the pic, Gazza. Appreciate your exhaustive research! ;D :-*
