Having to pick one is hard, I picked Bowie, another landmark appearance was by New York Dolls, which a lot of the English punks watched, I remember Joe Strummer talking about the Dolls on that show.

The Marley one remains very memorable. Although at the time I was too young to have watched it.
I rarely watched the Whistle Test until the late 70s as it was always on very late on a school night. My fondest memories of those I did watch were a few 'special' programmes. The first was in 1975 when I was allowed to stay up late (I was 11) to see a special interview with John Lennon from New York, on the release of his 'Rock 'n' Roll' album (the famous clips of 'Stand by Me' and 'Slippin and Slidin' come from this broadcast). Another one was from 1977 - a Stones concert special from the Paris shows the previous year. Started watching it more from about 1978-79 until it finished in 1986 or so. At the end of each year, just after midnight on New Years Eve, they always showed their 'Pick of the Year'. The life-changer for me was the 1979 edition when the 2-hour show ended with the clip that I'd missed from earlier in the year that everyone in my class had been raving about in school the next day - THAT 12-minute clip of Springsteen performing 'Rosalita'. Things were never the same after that! |
