The New Yorker known for presenting tribute concerts to some of music’s biggest acts has a new show for you – a 21 artist salute to The Rolling Stones in March.

You may not know Michael Dorf’s name but chances are good you’ve heard about his shows. The New York City showman has presented star-laden tributes to folks such as Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, The Who, Elton John, R.E.M. and Neil Diamond with proceeds from his shows going to help music education nonprofit groups.

This time around Dorf plans to honor the world’s greatest rock ‘n’ roll band when he presents his tribute to The Rolling Stones at NYC’s Carnegie Hall March 13.

So far the lineup includes Rosanne Cash, Steve Earle, Glen Hansard, The Black Crowes’ Rich Robinson, Carolina Chocolate Drops and The Mountain Goats with more acts being added.

Billed as “21 artists performing the 21 songs from Hot Rocks,” the night will feature artists diving into the portion of the Stones’ catalog that appeared on the Hot Rocks 1964-1971 anthology that was released 40 years ago. The band made its debut appearance at Carnegie Hall in 1964.

“I just finished reading ‘Life’ by Keith Richards and I’m more inspired than ever to honor the songwriting team of Jagger/Richards – especially the creative hit making period Hot Rocks covers,” Dorf said in a statement. “To hear those songs interpreted through the voices of other great artists will make for yet another amazing night in this concert series. I am grateful for the participating musicians’ help in raising funds for the charities the concert’s net proceeds go to.”

I like the idea but not the guests

Rich Robinson's latest album is fantastic. I was able to see him in concert not too long ago and it was one of the best shows I've seen in ages.

And I went into the gig thinking it was going to just be a so-so show.  Dude shows up with extremely interesting vintage guitars, amps and the like and played killer riffs all evening.

Agree with Rich and better Rich and the Black Crowes, they MUST add Gov't Mule and Patti Smith

I apolgize beforehand for such a misleading title! Couldn't resist. But, hey, maybe Mick or Keith will show up!

Carnegie Hall Benefit Honors the Rolling Stones

The annual concert at Carnegie Hall to benefit music education programs for the poor will have a Rolling Stones theme this spring, the event’s organizer, Michael Dorf, announced. Rosanne Cash, Steve Earle, the Carolina Chocolate Drops and others have signed on to perform all 21 tracks from the Rolling Stones classic collection “Hot Rocks 1964-1971,” on the 40th anniversary of its release. The concert will take place March 13 and the proceeds will go to support nonprofit organizations that provide music classes to impoverished youths, among them the Church Street School of Music, Young Audiences, Music Unites and the Pinwheel Project. Mr. Dorf, who owns the City Winery, has raised about $600,000 for charity with similar concerts over the last seven years, asking contemporary musicians to pay tribute to the music of older artists. Past shows have focused on the songs of Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen and the Who, among others. This year, at least 21 solo artists and groups will be on the bill to interpret songs by the Stones, including the Mountain Goats, Rich Robinson of the Black Crowes and Glen Hansard.

Three female legends have joined the tribute to the music of The Rolling Stones benefit concert at Carnegie Hall Mar 13. Marianne Faithfull, Ronnie Spector and Rickie Lee Jones have now been added to the star-studded lineup. Each participating artist will play a song off Hot Rocks 1964-1971, which includes "As Tears Go By," the Jagger/Richards-penned song originally a hit for Faithfull in 1964. Spector's history with the band dates to the same year, when The Ronettes toured with the Stones in the UK.

Presented and curated by Michael Dorf, noted music impresario and entrepreneur, the previously announced lineup for "The Music of The Rolling Stones at Carnegie Hall" tribute includes Rosanne Cash, The Mountain Goats, TV on the Radio & Jovanotti, Glen Hansard, Peaches, Marc Cohn, Taj Mahal, Steve Earle, Carolina Chocolate Drops, Jackie Greene and Rich Robinson (The Black Crowes).

The concert marks the eighth installment in an annual series to raise crucially needed funds for music education programs for underprivileged youth. Total funds raised exceeds $600,000 to date. 100% of the net proceeds from the concert will be given to eight music education non-profits: The American Symphony Orchestra Music Notes, Church Street School of Music, Young Audiences, Music Unites, FIKS (Fixing Instruments for Kids in Schools); and newly added beneficiaries The Mr. Holland's Opus Foundation, Midori and Friends, and The Center for Arts Education.

As Always I Agree..............Saving my money for the next 100 miles away tour!

Well I couldnt spring fpr the Carnagie Hall gig which is very expensive, so I got a ticket for the City WInery gig instead. THat is a very hip club, you are literally a few feet away from the stage. Its a cool venue, love this place, and it's going to be an excellent night out, some of my good Stones friends will be there as well. SO are of the RO people going?

Actually I got tickets for both shows. I just cant resist anything Stones related, and a bunch of my Stones friends are going so it will be fun. I was able to get both tickets for about $50 each. Both are really cool venues too. I recommend City Winery & Carnegie Hall to any out of towners visiting NYC. WTF, it makes life interesting! I'll post some videos, pics and revues, count on me for a full report Rocks Off!

Songs are there to be interpreted and one mark of a good song is that it can stand and be adapted to varied interpretations.

'tho I admit a reaggae version of Brown Sugar , for example, may be a difficult thing to pull off.

Even the stones themselves have done such - I am thinking in particular of their live perfomances of You Gotta Move in '75. Starts out in a delta blues style pretty much in the same vein as that on SF (perhaps a bit more "electric") and then morphs into a jazz/swing type feel (cf. Melody) to great effect.

Exactly right - and even better when you have some fine artists doing it as well.

A much better option than a bar band with wigs and make up trying to look like the Stones and slavishly copying the sound of their records - something which is fun (ideally with a few beers for company) and good for a few laughs but musically pointless.

I was at the show, which was very well done, though a little strange seeing the stage completely lit up for the whole time. I guess that's what they do for orchestras, but would have appreciated some different lights. Anyway, on with the show.. in order of appearance (with my ratings/comments):

1. YCAGWYW - Jovanotti, members of TV on the radio, and a high school choir.
the choir was great, Jovanotti's red shoes sparkled..

2. Time is on My Side - Ronnie Spector *** in great voice

3. Heart of Stone - Peaches **** surprising strong and forceful

4. Play with Fire - Rich Robinson ** guitar a little low in mix

5. Satisfaction - Juliette Lewis *** alot of spirit, fun, hot..

6. As Tears Go By - Marianne Faithful **** classic

7. Get off My Cloud - David Johanssen ** he looked like Mick, but something seemed a little flat (besides his butt, which he likes to show off)

8. Mother's Little Helper - Steve Earle ***

9. 19th Nervous Breakdown - Ian Hunter and the Rant Band ** kind of like David Jo, seemed like something was missing

10. Paint it Black - The Mountain Goats (missed this, pee break + beer)

11. Under My Thumb - Glen Hansard ** nice version, though kind of sacreligious to add Gloria at the end

12. Ruby Tuesday - Art Garfunkel **** wonderful, seemed to float in the air

13. Let's Spend the Night Together - Jackson Browne with Marc Cohn (duo acoustic) *** just the two of them, but very nice

14. Jumpin Jack Flash - Gomez **** creative rearrangment that rocked!

16. Sympathy for the Devil - ***** Rickie Lee Jones - just her and her guitar, seated but playing a wonderfully develish version - would LOVE to hear this one again

19. Midnight Rambler - *** Carolina Chocolate Drops (bluegrass version) - creative, but repetitive and did not include the middle slow part

Comments: most of the performers were accompanied by one or two of their own musicians, though on alot of tunes there was a full house band, with sax, back up vocals, led by Lenny Kaye (Patti Smith Group).

OK, so it was a bit of a let down that Mick or Keith (or Charlie!) didn't show up, but it was a very good hommage to the Stones, from some exceptional artists - in a historic setting.

Nice to read that Ronnie Spector's voice is still great. She was always great and hopefulls stays.
Would have loved to see Marianne singing "As Tears go by" and Taj Mahal doin' "Honky Tonk Women".
Must have been fun.

The Rolling Stones That Chased the Beatles Get a Carnegie Hall Tribute

The last time Steve Earle performed at a tribute concert at Carnegie Hall, he was
standing 30 feet away from the man he was honoring. "I opened the show, playing 'Nebraska'
with Bruce Springsteen right there. It was terrifying and exhilarating," he says of the 2007
event that he now calls "one of the best and most frightening experiences of my life."



It remains to be seen whether there will be a repeat of such star-struck terror when Earle steps
up to perform at the "Music of the Rolling Stones" tribute concert on Tuesday (March 13) at the
same iconic concert hall. No Mick? No Keith? When Billboard spoke to Earle recently, he couldn't
say whether there'd be a pop-in from any members of the group when he performs "Mother's Little
Helper," off the 1967 compilation slab "Flowers."



"I think the closest we're probably gonna get is Andrew Loog Oldham," Earle told us, referring to the Stones manager who produced many of the songs off "Hot Rocks 1964-1971," the best-selling hits collection that is the basis for the event. The more than 20 artists set to perform a song at Carnegie Hall include Jackson Browne, Gomez, Rosanne Cash, Peaches and Marianne Faithfull, among others.



Earle says that while he loves the band's hanging-out-in-France, riff-rock period that produced landmark
albums like 1972's "Exile on Main St.," he's often drawn to the early stuff. "'Mother's Little Helper' is
from a point in time when they were in competition with the Beatles and they knew it," he noted. "They were writing really great songs and that's what the band was all about."



As one of the first artists booked to perform at the tribute concert, the entire proceeds of which will go
to music and arts education programs, Earle had the opportunity to make his song choice a personal one.



"I picked ['Mother's Little Helper'] because it's literally the first song I learned to play on guitar," he said,
adding that it was on an acoustic because his dad wouldn't let him have an electric. "You know, I
wanted my guitar to sound like Jimi Hendrix, but I couldn't make it sound like that. So I gravitated
to the Stones, the Beatles… the stuff that sounded like my guitar."



Earle remembers the guitar being a left-handed hand-me-down from an uncle who was close in age. He learned how to play "Mother's Little Helper" because you only needed two fingers to make the E-minor chord. "You don't want your kids to learn their first song in a minor key -- it'll f*ck 'em up probably. But it was my first."



The education of Steve Earle took another big step in high school when a teacher gave him a copy of "The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan." "It's one of those deals that if it hadn't been for my drama teacher, I dunno," he says, offering that without that person's guidance, who knows how he would've turned out. These days many kids don't get exposed to much art, music or theater in school because of cost-cutting measures. Earle calls this slash-arts-first trend "one of the most wrongheaded things we've ever done."



"The idea that music and art are electives and not a necessary part of education -- that's unique to our society," he said, later adding, "The difference between human beings and animals is not an opposable thumb -- it's the fact that we create and consume art. And it's necessary to us. It's sustenance. It's not an elective; it's something we need."



Every penny of the proceeds from Tuesday's Rolling Stones tribute will be shared with eight music education non-profits (see a list here ). This is the eighth concert of its kind to raise much-needed funds for music education.
