Title: Pairing two very different guitarists together?
Post by StonesFan1990 on Oct 18th, 2011 at 3:20am
Hey--
I'm in the process of trying to start a band. I've got two very talented guitarists I know and am friends with; both are interested in a project together. However, the problem is:

One plays in a very classic rock style, similar to Mick Taylor or Slash.
The other plays in a thrash metal, very crunchy, etc.

Though the two guys' personalities are alike: Both are easy going, I'm worried their styles might not mesh.
One thought I had was that the Metal guy's crunchy, choppy style could potentially fit well with the guy's fluid, Slash-esque lead, that is, if both didn't want to be the "LEAD" player. If that worked, it could be a dynamic very similar to the Keith/Taylor dynamic (choppy, crunchy rhythm; fluid, bluesy lead). I do kind of want them to feel some tension--The same sort of tension that brought out the best in Mick Taylor and Keith, or Izzy and Slash in Guns N' Roses--that sort of need to one up the other.

If all else fails, I could simply move the thrash guy to bass (I'm sure he's ok at it) and either have two Stonesy guitarists or just find someone else or something.

I do know the classic rock guitarist has a passive aggressive side--Me and him met when we were competing for the same girl, who was a mutual friend. The guy tried to one up me at everything; if I told a funny story, he'd tell a funnier one; offering to pay for everything for both me and the chick. Whereas I've been friends with thrash guy since I was 16 or so.

Add into this a drummer who is into indie stuff and psychedelia and all underground stuff with a groovy sort of drumming style, and myself, who is into everything...It'll be a strange brew. It's my first band. It sucks having to write all the lyrics; none of the other guys are real music writers; It also sucks that I don't play any instruments myself.
