Beavis and Butthead return to MTV on October 27 with series of new shows.

In this Sunday's Sunday NY Times, their creator, Mike Judge, talks about their beginnings:

His fourth short, which he finished in early 1992, starred two boys with enormous heads and prominent, pickable noses, who play baseball with a frog. Unlike most of his other characters, Beavis and Butthead were drawings first, for which Judge then developed the voices. This took some trial and error. "I wanted them to sound very different. I kept thinking of Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, how Mick's voice is open-throated and Keith's is pinched off," he said. Once he put the short together, Judge added a theme song he wrote himself - he played the guitar, bass and keyboards, adding a drum-machine track - and mailed it and several others, cold, to television networks.
