The theme song for depression. I love it. Pretty sophisticated for young men in their 20's. My favorite lines?
Maybe then I'll fade away and not have to face the facts. It's not easy facin' up when your whole world is black. |

Can someone explain why there was so much lip-synching in the early days?

Always wondered that too..maybe because the live shows like Ed Sullivan didnt allow time for band setups and bears on bicyccles as well?...maybe a timing thing to insure the song was exactly 2:45????.....or artists (record labels) were afraid to sound different than the single in fear people would not buy it?..orrrrr...the producers didnt want a rocker adding some sexual words etc because back then they did not have the 7 second delay they have now to edit. |

I'd say all of the above......unless you were Glen Campbell. |

I always thought it was because sound just sucked back then...the broadcast ( production) was generally bad and all forced thru a single little speaker on a TV the size of a Buick.
Like stated above...why would a record company want their bands to sound that way? That, and bands weren't really expected to "perform", just show up and look pretty. But what do i know? |

Then anything coming through the TV would have the same problem, either live or pre-recorded, but you might be on to something here. In the very early days of television, nearly everything was broadcast live, but I wonder how much live music on those old shows was amplified? Seems like whenever I see a video of an old music show, I see only acoustic guitar, stand-up bass, etc. Then along comes rock & roll, the Beatles & Stones, heavy use of electric instruments, but not a lot of improvement in TV sound technology. Seems reasonable? |

Thanks EG...yeah...that is what I was aiming for...but you hit the target straight on!!! That's what I meant by the "production"...It was the Amplification/modulation that was holding things back, IMO, that is |

Yeah, those early variety-type shows simply didn't have the technology or the time for live amplified music. Even those mid-1970s shows dedicated to rock & roll used lip-synching a lot of the time (with the notable exception of "In Concert").
You can see by their faces in this segment that the Stones thought it was a joke, but a necessary evil to get their music across to a wide audience. |
