Title: Most underrated Stones songs? Post by StonesFan1990 on Sep 27th, 2011 at 6:34pm
My picks:
Around and Around Out of Time Time is On My Side (organ version) Dandelion 2000 Light Years from Home Lady Jane Luxury (I prefer the much looser, rawer '75 live version though) Time Waits for No One You Gotta Move Bitch 100 Years Ago Can You Hear the Music? Dancing with Mr. D I Just Wanna See His Face Loving Cup Sway Hand of Fate Cherry Oh Baby Emotional Rescue (hated generally due to it's Disco/New Wave sound) Some Girls (Everyone remembers Miss You but very few remember Some Girls' title track) Heaven Too Much Blood Winning Ugly |

Post by homesickjameswilliamson on Sep 27th, 2011 at 6:44pm good list for me, heaven and too much blood are some of their best, or at least my favourite, songs there's a strange ethereal touch to heaven that i haven't found replicated by the stones, or music in general, maybe jah is not dead and too much blood is a great song, cool beat and nice playing/weaving? on the guitar HJW |

My rule of thumb is, if it's not highly rated, it's underrated.

Winning Ugly should not even be rated...wan't that for a movie soundtrack that was never picked up? Details anyone?!?
otherwise a fair list... I think that most of UNDERCOVER is under rated, IMO...as an album and with individual songs. |

Citadel and Slave have two of the best riffs...ever, so those for starters. Although Slave is popular with "Crate diggers" for it's awesome breakbeat. Then it's down to personal picks. Mine would be 100 Years Ago, most of Undercover, Hey Negrita, Everything Is Turning To Gold (it should have been a hit!) etc etc.

No one has mentioned the forgotten classic "It's Not Easy", not even gimmekeef (who has the lyric "runnin' like a cat in a thunderstorm"'as a tagline), which proves its preeminence as the Stones' most underrated tune. This song has it all: chunky Berryesque chords, sinewy lead guitar and memorable lyrics such as "Just a big bed and a telephone/Like the last remnants of a stately home". Dig out your old copy of Aftermath and give it a listen, folks; if you dig the Stones (and if you don't, what are you doing here?), you're in for a treat.

Most of the songs listed here should be well-known to any serious Stones fan. The only ones I can think of offhand are "The Spider And The Fly" and "Sittin' On A Fence" - both of which show a sense of humor and a certain sly intelligence.

Well, I'm dutch, so my english is probably not that good, but as far as I know, "underrated" is not the same as "well-known". The songs you name are also well-known. Isn't "underrated" the same as "not appreciated or obscure or Not-known"?? I mean "The spider and the fly" is probably more known than "Cry to me" or "Hitch Hike", to name just a few. Just asking. |

Through The Lonely Nights' pops into my head right away.
Followed by "Everything;s Turning To Gold"; and I think "It Should Be You" is a fine song "Think", "Talkin Bout You" "Honest I Do" "Winning Ugly" gets no love; Jagger oversings but still... all of the early unreleased Blues like "Roadrunner", "Diddley Daddy", "Meet me in the Bottom", "Honey What's Wrong", "How Many More Times", "Bright Lights Big City", "Reelin And Rockin" |

I think Jig-Saw Puzzle is underrated. That's an excellent song. She Was Hot comes to mind: underrated by the Stones themselves mostly. They waited til the last tour with that one and it worked great on stage (much better than Sway did, though I love the fact that I got to see them take a shot at that song).

More of my two cents:
Streets Of Love ( I say that because I watched them do it and they pulled it off amazingly, Atlantic City 2006) Sweethearts Together Charlies brushes are the reason...so classy!!! Love Is Strong It is much more than MTV / FM fodder Too Much Blood I really Love this song |
