Title: 1981 Tour
Post by left shoe shuffle on Sep 25th, 2011 at 9:41am

...kicked off 30 years ago today at JFK Stadium in Philly:

http://goo.gl/RKq9u
Paul Altobelli

2 glorious early fall days with the Stones and a couple hundred thousand of their closest friends.

Buncha 'TY' and classics, but it just didn't get no better than the second show trifecta of 'Down The Road Apiece', 'Mona' and 'Twenty Flight Rock'...

The last tour they really kicked ass imo. After this they didn't really rock anymore live!

I must not have received the memo that they didn't rock after 81.

The Stones love Philly.

What a great tour.

Charlie was great throughout.

Guitars were loud, raw, heavy, deep and tight.

69, then 82, then 75 etc...Great F#ucking tour 81 & 2 was.

I was at that show!!

Anyway...I think they have gotten better...at least Jagger has...since he stopped clocking in 3 1/2 miles  per nite of prancing from side to side, up and down ramps...in those stadiums

his singing has gotten better IMO

Wern't the guitars a little tinny-sounding during this tour? Thats the only real problem Ive experienced with what Ive heard and seen. Saying that, Hampton '81 is a terrific boot.

The mixes were not the best ,and it was not restricted to the Stones... that is true...but in a few short years, technology got better and those stadium AND arena shows sounded better and better...

The Stones did own the world at this time...It was a comeback to the greatness that they barely lost.

The last tour where they were still pirates, if you know what I mean.  And seeing them in the flesh while hearing them actually playing at age 17 was almost more than my senses could process.

It wasn't all bad; I saw 'em in Hartford and the boots confim they were good shows, as were Buffalo and Hampton.  But. in general, it is my least favorite tour because; 1) Jagger's coke-ruined vocals most nights, 2) Jagger being winded by running too much (burning off the coke, no doubt!), 3) the shitty mix that slimed the guitarists night after night, and 4) Ernie Watts.

This tour reminds me of great sadness. It was the tour the should have brought to Australia. They hadnt been here since 73. Tattoo You & Start me up both hit #1 here, the 1st time since 73 they did it. But they dropped the ball and didnt come here. Money, as usual, was probably at heart of it. Not coming here for this tour lost them another generation of fans. KISS did a huge tour around this time, taking all the glory. Fleetwood Mac a couple of years earlier. Then The Police and Springsteen did their massive shows, and all of sudden, people forgot about the Stones. I was fuming they didnt tour. It just seemed that every band in the world toured, except them (and The Who, of course). And lets not forget U2!

But i must say, i was even worse when they didnt come in 89/90. There was absolutely no excuse except taking an audience for granted.

So while many of you have marvellous memories, all i have is the movie of the tour, Hampton Roads, and the very, very dull Still Life album.

I feel quite sad now.

Wow!!

TomL and I just watched that ...you crazy motherfucker, where did you dig that outta??

Was trying to see if I was on camera .. I was maybe 40-50 feet off the stage in front, slightly to Ronnie's side.  Wild seeing how packed in I was!!

Goddam that is cool.
They had already taken box-cutters to the stage mural to prevent the wind from taking it over!

Crazy -- thanks man!!!!

VERY windy afternoon.
I was on Keith's side about 2 sections up.
And it was just about this time that they took the stage.
Thanks for the clip Gazza.

Have had that footage for about 25 years. So I presumed it was on youtube and hey presto, there it was.

There's quite a few shows where the first 3 songs exist as raw footage filmed for local newscasts (thats usually the only 3 songs they were allowed to film and show partial clips of..)

I dont recall them playing Take the A Train, but it was a very confused day because of the winds.

Thorogood opened and it was spitting rain and raw.
Then Journey came on and they were just not cutting it as the middle act.
They got booed, heckled, stuff thrown at them...the promoter came out and gave the crowd hell for its behavior and it only made matters worse.  Then they cut down the mural and the whole thing seemed disheveled.

Very windy and the sound was hard to hear as it swept up..had a good coke buzz on from the Dead show the night before at the old Aud. Not a big fan of the 81 tour and this show I rank last in my listing of 43 shows....way too much saxaphone on every freakin tune..yucchhh

First - and smallest - arena show of the tour was in Rockford IL on 10/1.
Not on the original tour sked, but a radio station's petition campaign brought the Stones to town.

Tickets even gave a nod to the locals...

Listinening to the beginning ot UMT on Still Life at the record store (had just had teeth pulled out and was offered an LP to cheer me up, was undecided between Still Life and Ram...until I listened to them) is what turned me on to the Stones in June or July of 1982, so it can't be all bad ;-)

I do remembe reading here that a lot of the songs sounded the same with most of the arrangements being the same and the lack of decent stadium sound systems at the time. It's not too bad on the LSTNT movie but it must have been overdubbed pretty bad.
