Some Girls -- Live In Texas '78

Release date: 22 November 2011

Blu-ray/Blu-ray + CD/DVD/DVD + CD

The Rolling Stones 1978 tour of the USA in support of that year’s “Some Girls” album is considered by fans to be one of their very best. The tour followed immediately on the release of the “Some Girls” album and by the time the band arrived in Texas in mid-July the album had hit the No.1 spot on the US charts. The tour took a “back to basics” approach, with the band and their music very much at the forefront and little or no elaborate staging.  Filmed at the Will Rogers Memorial Center in Fort Worth, Texas, on 18 July 1978, this concert is typical of the tour with the Rolling Stones delivering a raw, energetic performance in front of a crowd who are clearly loving the show. Many of the tracks from “Some Girls” are included in the live set with a sprinkling of Stones classics from earlier albums. Originally shot on 16mm film, the footage has been carefully restored and the sound remixed and remastered by Bob Clearmountain from the original multitrack tapes. This is undeniably the Rolling Stones at the peak of their form.

01. Let It Rock
02. All Down The Line

Fucking great. And a two-disc set to boot.

Only the first 6 songs have ever circulated on video. And even then, in less than pristine quality. The show was filmed for a concert movie which was then never released.

The audio of the full show has, of course, been in circulation on discs 1 & 2 of 'Handsome Girls' since around 1994 or so.

Its the release I expected to come out as part of the Some Girls reissue package, but its a very welcome one. Eagle Rock said they planned to put out two archive releases per year - they havent quite held to that 100%, but its still pretty good.

I think this somewhat vindicates the recent rumours going around that the expanded Some Girls deluxe release would be available before Christmas.

You're all in for a treat - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t5dp48jHPjw&feature=related

Wait a minute - 1 DVD & CD?

Does that mean theyre releasing an audio CD version of the show too?

(which may be a bit awkward as its 5 minutes too long for a single disc...)

Great news!  I've had Handsome Girls for a while now and love it!  Now I'll have the video too.

Another good reason to buy that larger TV I've been wanting.

Cant imagine so, Roger.

UMG would have the exclusive rights to that. It'll be a separate release - and its probably likely to attract more attention (and sales) than a DVD.

There might conceivably be a scenario where you can buy both items together as some kind of expensive deluxe package, but nowhere on this announcement does it mention a 'CD only' option - and UMG will most certainly put out an audio-only release.

great news... hope a dlx SG is still going to happen. I'm glad the DVD of the tour won't be attached to a SG dlx ed. I do wonder as Gazza mentioned, what will be going on the CD, since the entire show might not fit... but there was aa bit of time between songs... and didn't they already do overdubs and edit of the KBFH tapes that made up the bootlegs? I guess this and many other questions will be answered on our next episode!

BTW, this will be the first official release of that tour (well... the "Sucking in the 70s" version on "When the tits come down" is the only one, it comes from the 6th July 1978 show at the Masonic Hall in Detroit)

Oh man I can't wait for this!
But, the question is will the video be of better quality than the current vids being circulated?
And, is this release just a tease as to what we can expect in the lead up to the SG deluxe release?
My guess is that we will see more stuff from the vaults soon!
As far as I can tell, it's all they've got left.

So, I say, release the hounds!
Up till now we've gotten very little, save the Exile reissue, and Ya Ya's Deluxe.
Could be a precursor of the 50 anniversary tour!
Kicking off a limited engagement tour behind some great nuggets from the vaults makes sense.
Stones fans will certainly be clamoring for a tour more so than a new album I'd wager.

With the release of the vault stuff they are honoring the latest contract.
I do wonder if any new music is even in their agenda?
The thought of Mick and Keef writing together again seems far fetched to me.
Hell, Mick hasn't the time to deal with Keith right now anyway with the Super Heavy release.

Though I'm sure we'd all love the though of a new disk, forget it.
Even if they wanted to put out a new disk, there's no time before their 50th anniversary.
Everyone that I talk to about the Stones (save for RO'ers) couldn't even name any of the last 3 disks!
Time to face that most horrible of thoughts-A day without the Stones is fast approaching.
Hell, I hate to think like that, but hey, it is what it is.

Yes.

The KBFH 'Memphis' broadcast (which is actually just 2 songs from Memphis, plus songs from Detroit and Houston) would fit neatly on to one disc (obviously, 'Starfucker' wasnt broadcast).

Its also an even better collection of performances than the Fort Worth gig.

It'd be sweet if the CD consists of an entirely different set of songs than the DVD.

The circulating videos of Fort Worth are about 3rd generation at best. And the clip I posted has even had the sound synched from 'Handsome Girls'. I cant imagine theyd even consider putting out a DVD/blu ray of the gig thats in similar quality.

There was meant to be a concert movie from 1978 - and it was filmed in Fort Worth. So there SHOULD be a master of it in their vaults.

I think we're looking at another tie-in in the way that 'Ladies & Gents' and 'Stones in Exile' were put out as companion releases to the Exile reissue.

Eagle Rock seem to be committed to a long-term series of archive DVD/blu ray releases from the Stones' vaults, so it appears that in the last two years or so the band have finally accepted that their past is actually their long-term future.  The resounding commercial success of the Exile reissue certainly hasnt done any harm.

There will be a greatest hits package in 2012. Thats definitely in UMG's short-term plans. So, they probably dont NEED to make a new studio album if they choose to tour next year, although it would certainly be a welcome bonus.

There were two KBFH specials..one billed as 'Memphis' and one as 'Lexington'. The Memphis one was about 75-80 mins and the Lexington one was about an hour. Each had a few songs from the 'named' show plus others from Detroit and Houston. The songs have all ended up on the various versions of Handsome Girls bootlegs over the years (although those recordings come from the original source tapes - not the broadcasts). The version of 'When The Whip Comes Down' that was released in 1981 on 'Sucking in the 70s' comes from the KBFH Detroit recording.

From nzentgraf.de - these are the songs that were broadcast ("Starfucker" wasnt broadcast for obvious reasons although as far as I recall the source tape of it is on the bootlegs)

er... Mick isnt going to be doing a 2011 interview as a bonus feature for an 'unofficial' project....

Not to mention the band's official site having a distinctly 'summer 1978' theme all of a sudden...

Just because Eagle Rock's website team arent as quick on the draw as they should be doesnt mean its not happening.

Its legit. Take it to the bank.

Sorry to trust but verify, but evo88 is the only website listing this release with an image.  Amazon UK has it listed for release on Nov. 21, but no image.  Nothing listed on Eagle Rock. While the text on the evo88 site seems legit, especially with the mention of Bob Clearmountain, I'd still like to see something on the Eagle Rock site or the Stones site to verify the evo88 site.  We don't want another Memory Hotel situation.

and then depression set in...

Its legit. Take it to the bank.

the official FB page has the same theme too... next year will be awesome for me... two of my fave bands are touring big anniversaries... Stones 50 and Rancid 20... going to see Rancid this weekend in SF, they are even doing a Stones length set of 2 hours, most bands you're lucky to get more than an hour...

EAGLE ROCK ENTERTAINMENT PRESENTS
THE ROLLING STONES CAUGHT LIVE AT THE TOP OF THEIR GAME
SOME GIRLS LIVE IN TEXAS 1978
LIVE CONCERT OUT ON DVD AND BLU-RAY NOVEMBER 21

New York, NY (September 8, 2011)– Continuing their partnership with the greatest rock ‘n’ roll band in the world, Eagle Rock Entertainment have announced the DVD and Blu-Ray release of The Rolling Stones Some Girls Live in Texas 1978. Available for the first time ever on November 21, Some Girls Live in Texas 1978 features Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Charlie Watts, Ronnie Wood and Bill Wyman live in concert during the 1978 US tour which followed the release of their groundbreaking album Some Girls. [Pre-book order date October 28, MSRP $14.98 for DVD, $19.98 for Blu-ray, and TBA for DVD/CD and Blu-ray/CD].

Some Girls Live in Texas 1978 comes hot on the heels of the huge success of 2010’s Stones in Exile and Ladies & Gentlemen and marks the next stage in the Eagle Vision / Rolling Stones enterprise. Some Girls Live in Texas 1978 will be available on four different formats: DVD, Blu-Ray, plus special edition DVD + CD and Blu-Ray + CD digipack presentations including a reproduction tour program. Bonus features on all formats will include a new interview with Mick Jagger. Worldwide theatrical distribution deals including the US (in October 2011) will be announced soon.

Capturing The Rolling Stones at their live best, and fully restored to the highest level of picture and sound quality, Some Girls Live in Texas 1978 was filmed at the Will Rogers Memorial Center in Forth Worth, Texas on July 18, 1978 on what many fans consider to be one of the band’s greatest tours. This was due to the band’s ‘back to basics’ approach both musically and visually, as the shows were stripped back compared to previous tours, harnessing the new punk rock attitude of the late 70s.

Showcasing many songs from the Some Girls album, celebrated for being the Rolling Stones’ most direct and diverse collection of music, and which by the time the band arrived in Texas, had gone to the top of the US charts, this concert demonstrates the sheer force and raw energy of The Rolling Stones live on stage.

Some Girls songs like “Miss You,” “Respectable,” “Beast Of Burden,” “When The Whip Comes Down,” and “Shattered,” weave into a set list which also includes “All Down The Line,” “Honky Tonk Women,” “Tumbling Dice,” “Jumpin’ Jack Flash,” “Happy,” and “Brown Sugar.”

Originally shot on 16mm film, the concert footage has been carefully restored with the sound remixed and remastered by Bob Clearmountain from the original multi track tapes.

“Eagle is delighted to once again be working with the Rolling Stones on another landmark release highlighting an outstanding performance from the world’s greatest rock ‘n’ roll band.”
- Lindsay Brown, Managing Director Operations & International, Eagle Rock Entertainment Ltd

It also contains a promising little teaser at the end  ...

THE ROLLING STONES
SOME GIRLS: LIVE IN TEXAS '78
One of the great Stones live albums unleashed on November 21st!

The Rolling Stones 1978 Tour was short sharp and to the point. Playing concise sets, the stripped down band was it its most raucous, sleazy and arrogant  - just what Stones fans love. Now a complete show from the tour, recorded at the Will Rogers Memorial Center, Fort Worth, Texas on July 18 1978 will be released on DVD/CD/Bluray on November 21st. Originally shot on 16mm film, the footage has been carefully restored and the sound remixed and remastered by Bob Clearmountain from the original multitrack tapes. This is an awesome and raunchy show - not to be missed!

great news... hope a dlx SG is still going to happen.

My KBFH tape is from Lexington, KY, it's a second generation cassette with the first recorded from the radio broadcast it has a very good quality but it's not an official release

That's on audio in fine sound as "Some Girls Are Bigger Than Others," no?

Post by left shoe shuffle on Sep 10th, 2011 at 8:04am

No. 'Some Girls Are Bigger Than Others' purports to be from Memphis, but like the "Lexington KY" KBFH, is culled from different shows.

'Handsome Girls' is the one-stop shop for all of those recordings, including the complete Fort Worth show.

On that Fandango link, you have to punch in your city/state  or zip code.

When I enter "New Orleans" I get the same result you got.
I discovered that when I enter the zip code for a theatre that's 30 miles away from me, I get a listing there.

Unless a theatre local to me signs up between now and 10/18, I'll be road-tripping.

back in 1981 when I saw L n G five straight nights we all brought flasks (not that any of us were of age but....)

The Rolling Stones - Some Girls, Live in Texas

From October 4th Rolling Stones fans will be able to watch a previously unseen Rolling Stones concert movie, The Rolling Stones: Some Girls, Live in Texas, in digital cinemas worldwide. Originally shot on 16mm film at Fort Worth, Texas in 1978, the footage has been restored in high definition, with the sound remixed and remastered by Bob Clearmountain from the original multitrack tapes.  The result is an explosive visual reminder of why The Rolling Stones are  the best live band on the planet.

The movie features many Stones classics including Honky Tonk Women, Tumbling Dice, Brown Sugar, Jumpin’ Jack Flash,  Miss You and Beast of Burden, plus an interview with Sir Mick Jagger shot in August 2011 where he introduces the concert and offers an insight into its significance in the band’s history.

Mick Jagger says: “Fort Worth was an amazing night in a blistering hot July. Watching it now, the band were really intense and focused, but we were also having a blast with the fans who were really getting into the show and the new tracks from “Some Girls”. I think our fans will love the chance to see this concert movie for the first time on the big screen.”

The Rolling Stones 1978 tour of the USA in support of that year’s “Some Girls” album is considered by fans to be one of their very best. The tour followed immediately on the release of the album and by the time the band arrived in Texas in mid-July it had hit the No.1 spot on the US charts. The tour took a “back to basics” approach, with the band and their music very much at the forefront, and little or no elaborate staging.

Filmed at the Will Rogers Memorial Center in Fort Worth, Texas, on 18th July 1978, this concert is typical of the tour with The Rolling Stones delivering a raw, energetic performance in front of a crowd who are clearly loving the show. Many of the tracks from “Some Girls” are included in the live set with a sprinkling of Stones classics from earlier albums. This is truly The Rolling Stones at their peak.

Running time 105 minutes
Screening at UK cinemas on 4 October 2011
Details of the cinema screenings available here

Rolling Stones' 'Some Girls' Concert Film on Oct. 18 -- Exclusive Performance Video

Posted on Sep 24th 2011 by Dan Reilly

Michael Putland, Hulton Archive

As Spinner recently reported, the Rolling Stones are reissuing their 1978 classic, complete with a bunch of bonus tracks, this November.

To further revisit that era, the band is also premiering the never-before-released 'Some Girls Live in Texas 1978,' a concert film recorded in Fort Worth during the tour behind that album. The DVD, which features performances of fan favorites and an interview with Mick Jagger, will be released on Nov. 21, the same day as the album reissue.

But, as Spinner can exclusively reveal, the Stones faithful will be able to see the movie on Oct. 18, when it premieres in theaters across the U.S. The movie will be screened in over 300 locations, and ticket information will be available from Fathom Events.

"I just finished off doing all the outtakes for the 'Some Girls' album we're releasing at Thanksgiving," Jagger recently told Spinner. "We did 'Exile,' we did a lot of different takes, a lot of different cuts that hadn't come out before, so we're doing the similar kind of thing with 'Some Girls,' so I've just been doing them because a lot of them weren't complete."

If you need a fix before the film premieres, check out this previously unreleased performance of 'Beast Of Burden' below.

I never thought we'd see this released let alone in this quality!

I remember thinking months ago that the Live show in Texas would be amazing with the Some Girls release. In the back of my mind though I really thought we'd just get the '78 promo videos and maybe some Saturday Night Live clips.

This is gonna blow any DVD, official release or boot, out of the water for me.

Make sure you see this at the cinema if you get chance.

I've posted that version on the site before, but not with that quality. I love that version so much that it's unreal. If people talk about a peak of their live performances, I'd say 78 was it. That tour was so incredibly tight and Charlie's playing is really out of this world. Not a single drummer in the world could come close to him and can never play like that. It is just so frighteningly crisp. Oh how I miss Bill Wyman.

I've watched this 3 times.  It's simply stellar.  They were everything a band should be and more.  And as far as Mick wondering if he was hard/rough/tough/rich enough?  Oh my yes.  Didn't even need to smile and say "please."

And watching the glimmers sing together?  What a jolt of joy that was.  All of them perfect.

Thanks much. [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

Agreed.
When I view this now & think Woody was a hired gun at the time, it is stunning.
His playing is so much of this tour it's crazy.
As well, I bet we'll not see much of Mac, but again, he's everywhere in the mix.

Is that location ok for you? I have no idea about Teds. I doubt Ted would open in that area of town! It's a little closer for me. I have no clue what is nearby, never been there. If you have a better idea I am in. Make it happen, captain! Your call. Announce it and they will come.
I went to that theatre you mentioned for L&G way up there and did not see you there- only 5 people showed. Let's do it, I'm a very busy man!

The Rolling Stones - Some Girls Live In Texas

http://goo.gl/cxks4

Ilan Preskovsky
Because Everybody Else Has One
October 9, 2011

While seemingly the entirety of Johannesburg's population under the age of 35 were attending Coldplay's massive one-night-only stadium concert, I found myself enjoying a rather different concert experience. Cine 2 at Sandton City's multiplex is normally host to press screenings that Ster Kinekor hold for their 3D releases but last night that by now very familiar - and, it has to be said, rather nice - cinema offered up something a whole lot more interesting than a pointless stereoscopic conversion of The Lion King. I don't want to speak ill of what I'm sure was a great concert-going experience for Coldplay fans (personally, I could take them or leave them) but I can't imagine it being more electrifying than this woefully under-attended showing of a previously unreleased concert film that caught The World's Greatest Rock and Roll Band in one of their most interesting, not to say best, creative periods. Sadly, this was only one of a small handful of showings for this great film so its unlikely that South African audiences will get another chance to catch it on the big screen (though, Americans, at least, will still have that chance come 18 October) but it is due for a DVD/ Blu-Ray release towards the end of the year so consider this an advance review of a set that is bound to be a must-own for all dyed-in-the-wool rock and roll fans.

It's hard to believe what a difference 6 years makes. The previous archive Stones live release, Ladies and Gentlemen: The Rolling Stones captured a period in the Rolling Stones' history when they were sitting right on the top of the world, living up to their self-appointed - but well-earned - label as the Greatest Rock and Roll Band in the World. Touring their magnum opus, Exile on Main Street, Ladies and Gentlemen includes everything you could want from a rock and roll show at the time: great songs, virtuoso musicianship and, lets be honest, a certain level of pompous, self-important seriousness that flourished in the heyday of prog-rock and jam bands.

Cut to 1978 and things are rather different. The intervening years between '72 and '78 saw The Stones - as well as the genre they represented - undergo some fairly serious, tumultuous changes. As Keith Richards became more and more drug-addled, the Stones' critical standing was hurt by a string of albums that, though perfectly good on their own terms, were a serious step down from the giddy heights that the band consistently reached between 1968 and 1972. Meanwhile, The Stones' stage shows more and more captured the state of rock and roll at the time: overblown, fatuous and musically irrelevant.

Enter the punks.

You can always argue about just how much the likes of The Sex Pistols, The Ramones and The Clash truly changed the face of popular music but one thing is certain: they sure as hell scared the life back into life at least a part of the reigning musical establishment. Essentially throwing down the gauntlet on what rock and roll used to be, it was up to the classic rockers to pick it up and show that there was some fire left in those old (over 30!) bones.

For The Rolling Stones, at least, it meant releasing an album that was easily their best since Exile but, perhaps even more importantly, it returned a focus and a hunger to their live performances. Until now, of course, this was only evident if you were lucky enough to see them during that period or by knowing where to look for the right bootlegs (the brilliant Handsome Girls, in particular). With Some Girls Live in Texas, however, we finally get an official front seat to an area in the Stones' live career that has previously been neglected - and its even more spectacular than even the best bootlegs dared to suggest.

It undeniably helps that the guys at Eagle Vision did such a sterling job remastering the both the video and the sound. Aside for some moments where the camera goes slightly out of focus (presumably that was simply how it was when originally filmed), the visuals are a huge step up from the somewhat drab Ladies and Gentlemen and, though it lacks the professional sheen of the band's later releases, it's a show that simply needs to be seen, not just heard.

Disregarding the music for a moment, Some Girls Live In Texas is a blast simply to watch. The camera may - as is typical - focus far more on Mick Jagger than any other member of the band but it's more than justifiable in this case. His live singing may be variable but Jagger has always been the world's greatest frontman but nothing could have prepared me for how magnetic, how enrapturing a presence he is here. Not standing still for a second, Jagger takes his characteristic preening to new levels as he constantly taunts both the audience and the rest of the band (he lays it on especially think every time he gets within a couple of feet of -still - new Stone on the block, Ronnie Wood) before busting out a fevered dance move that, more often than not this time around, owes as much to Pete Townshend as it does to James Brown. Not to be totally outdone, Keith and Ronnie do more than their share of mugging for crowd and camera alike and it's clear that the band as a whole is having a good time.

The difference is, though, that unlike certain other tours, the buffoonery is tempered by a genuine intensity to their performances. It's just as well that the newly remastered, surround sound is as perfectly balanced, clear and punchy as it is because these are performances that deserve the best possible audio presentation. I'm not going to lie, I did on occasion miss the more relaxed swing of the Stones' later live sound but that doesn't change the fact that for pure, full-blooded energy, Some Girls Live In Texas is the official Stones release to beat.

The avatar of punk-rock is an omnipresent force throughout the concert. While The Rolling Stones of Ladies and Gentlemen presents a band at the top of their game simply doing what they do best and later releases are simply a showcase of a well-oiled musical unit simply enjoying the fact that they're still around doing what they love, The Rolling Stones of Some Girls Live In Texas are a band with something to prove. While putting on a truly exciting, entertaining show, the boys seem desperate to show just why they were once considered to be The Greatest Rock and Roll Band in the World and to show just where all that punk energy came from in the first place.

The straight-up rock and roll numbers obviously benefit tremendously from this new approach as career best performances of 'Star Star' (the song that Chuck Berry should have been writing when he wrote 'My Ding-A-Ling'), 'When The Whip Comes Down' and Chuck Berry's 'Sweet Little Sixteen', clearly show. More surprising is the intensity that is brought to the fore on a rocking but somehow still beautiful version of 'Beast Of Burden', a more relentless but still oh-so-groovy 'Tumbling Dice' and, most especially, a version of 'Love In Vain' that sounds closer to Howlin' Wolf than original author, Robert Johnson.

Highlights are somewhat difficult to select as each and every song has the same levels of power and intensity - only a ramshackle version of Some Girls' hilarious-yet-insanely-pretty country ditty, 'Faraway Eyes', providing any real light relief. The reason is simple: every single member of the band are on fire for every second of the 90-odd minute set.

Bolstered by minimalistic support from Stones stalwart, Ian Stewart, on piano and Ronnie's former Faces bandmate, Ian McLagan, on keyboards, no member of the Rolling Stones have ever been better. Charlie Watts's drum work fuses with Bill Wyman's bass to provide the typically great rhythm on which the Stones's sound is based - only this time even more so - while Keith's riffing has never been more pulsatingly powerful. On the lead guitar front, Keith's guitar merges with Ronnie's incendiary mixture of traditional lead and slide guitars in their now-famous "ancient art of weaving" guitar interplay but, though Keith is in typically faultless form, it is Ronnie who truly impresses. Anyone wondering why he was chosen for the job need look no further than his stellar playing here. It may lack the virtuoso smoothness of his predecessor, Mick Taylor but his interplay with Keith is as fiery as it is lyrical.

As for the vocals, Jagger is, as I said, typically variable on a technical level but - however much his weird enunciation of 'All Down The Line' may have bugged me - he brings a gritty, almost aggressive passion to every song here that constantly took me by surprise - with his growling stab at 'Love In Vain' being particularly and shockingly intense. Best of all though, in a practice that has mostly fallen by the wayside over the years, he is given plenty of ragged support with backing vocals by Keith and Ronnie.

The Rolling Stones - Some Girls: Live In Texas is simply a Rolling Stones live show unlike any official document of the band we have seen to date. And, though, it's certainly not the only Stones DVD you need  - I, for one, have particular soft spots for Ladies and Gentlemen: The Rolling Stones; Bridges to Babylon and the theatre show from Paris that can be found in the [i]Four Flicks boxset - with its unconventional set-list (seven out of the twenty tracks are from the recently released Some Girls album, while a further two are Chuck Berry covers); flawless mixture of musicianship and showmanship; overall consistency and an  electrifying, punkish energy, it is very probably the best to date.

I can't wait to see Eagle Vision try and top this with their next archive release.

Movie Review: Rolling Stones – Some Girls: Live In Texas 1978

October 16, 2011 by Bob Lee

http://goo.gl/vfpNr

The notoriously tight-arsed Stones have finally started to loosen up with the contents of their sizable archive. Long-awaited gems from their prime years, like the 1972 concert film Ladies And Gentlemen The Rolling Stones, a handful of Exile On Main Street and Get Your Ya Yas Out outtakes, even a tiny bit of the notoriously unreleasable Robert Frank documentary Cocksucker Blues have all seen release in the last few years, albeit some of them only as part of extra-pricey box sets.

The results of their latest dip into the vault is not too shabby – an unreleased film of a complete show from the Some Girls tour, which despite its later vintage, contains moments that blow all that stuff away. For one thing, it’s surprisingly well-shot, a much better visual portrayal of an entire band than Ladies And Gentlemen, which gave 95% of the camera time to Jagger. But mostly it’s indispensable for capturing the Stones at their final peak, their last moment of true potency.

You can hear the Stones’ response to punk in the relentless riffs of “Respectable” and “When The Whip Comes Down”, and the lyrics, which bring the depraved manor lord of “Live With Me” and “Stray Cat Blues” down to Taxi Driver-era New York and teach him multiculturalism. Their vision of punk seems more Lou Reed than Ramones, but the result is undeniably tighter and harder than the handful of albums that precede it, a step up for a band that had looked to be in decline. Of course, they’d slide right back into that decline a year later with the vapid Emotional Rescue, but for a moment, they sound re-energized, as if they have something to prove for the first time in God knows how long. They sound determined to rock more completely than these snotty teenagers that dare question their elders ever could, and do it in the big room.

For the accompanying tour, captured for this release on a brilliant night in Fort Worth, they ignored most of the expected crowd-pleasers and all their ballads, and put together a show built around the new album, with a smattering of numbers from the catalog that fit the groove – “Star Star”, “All Down The Line” and so forth. Mostly short, fast, sharp songs, the ballsiest and juiciest of their repertoire. Jagger sets the tone by announcing to the crowd, “We love being in Texas. If the band’s a little bit lacking in energy tonight, it’s because we spent it all last night fuckin’.”

Well, if that’s what it takes to get them to play like this, I say, let them do that EVERY night. Yeah, yeah of course I know – they do. They’re the Rolling Stones, after all. But they’re also human beings, and had, just two years earlier, proved themselves capable of giving a flabby, unfocused performance if they felt like it (see the highly underwhelming Love You Live for proof). The Stones practically invented the English manner of loose-but tight, but by then they’d clearly loosened it a little too much. Maybe it was all that time hanging with mellow Jamaicans, trying to project a relaxing glow instead of fighting in the streets. They really did sound like a band that had done a little too much fuckin’ the night before at that point, and even the drooling core audience that’ll pay good money for any old thing they put out doesn’t JUST pay them to get laid.

But by ’78 they’re back to working for it. Loose-but-tight becomes tight-but-loose, as they blast through the fast ones hovering an inch off the ground. The version of “Shattered” pumps it up to almost double the original tempo, Charlie Watts busting out a shifty backbeat at lightning speed, Woody asserting himself with some of the best playing he’d ever do. Not even those ealier films from the Mick Taylor era convey the level of energy shown by the entire band here. The pace only slackens for a handful of new songs, the disco-slinky “Miss You” and “Beast of Burden”, the country yarn “Faraway Eyes”, and a slow-grooving cover of “Just My Imagination”.

This tour was the last time the band would offer a new vision of themselves, one the fans hadn’t seen before. While it’s a short show, slim on big hits and not at all balanced, it’s overall more satisfying than any of the films of their later tours, in which the essence of the Stadium Stones doesn’t really change. The latter-day shows are still pretty good, well-planned to cover every facet of their long career, including just enough new stuff while focusing on the songs you grew up with. But if this is the tail end of their evolution, they seem determined to go out with a bang.

Some Girls Live In Texas ’78 will be screened in theaters for one night only, this Tuesday October 18 at LA Live and other locations, see the NCM Fathom website for all locations. CD, DVD and Blu-Ray versions will be released on November 21 by Eagle Rock Entertainment.

Concert film captures Rolling Stones' reinvention

In the late 1970s, the Rolling Stones could have been swept away by disco and punk. They answered with Some Girls.

A never-before-seen concert film of a Fort Worth show from the era gives a hint at what a redefining moment it truly was.

"They were exploding (to a new level), and they wanted to make sure that they were the No. 1 band in the world," said concert promoter Jack Orbin at Stone City Attractions, who staged the band's Cotton Bowl shows three years later.

Released in June 1978, Some Girls generated hits (Miss You, Beast Of Burden) and controversy (from the appropriated images on its album cover to its lyrics about black girls). Through history's lens, it also can be viewed as the last of the legendary band's great reinventions.

Don't forget, they'd had their ya-ya's out - and more. By then, Mick Jagger, Keith Richards and company were rock royalty, albeit elegantly wasted jet-setters approaching middle age.

Led by the devilish "Glimmer Twins," Jagger and Richards, the Stones had outlasted the Beatles, survived the death of guitarist Brian Jones and the debacle at Altamont, and even redefined their sound with Jumpin' Jack Flash, Honky Tonk Women, Brown Sugar, Tumbling Dice and It's Only Rock 'n' Roll (But I Like It).

Some Girls broke from the past.

The Rolling Stones: Some Girls Live in Texas presents the inspired concert delivered at Will Roger Centre in Fort Worth on July 18, 1978. The restored film is being promoted nationally as a one-night-only screening.

A DVD of the concert film and a deluxe reissue of the album will arrive in stores in November.

There is some mystery about the film, which was "found in these old tins in their London warehouse," said Dan Diamond at National CineMedia Fathom Events, a digital theater broadcast network and technology company.

"It's never been seen before. It's sort of like the lost files. This is one of the greatest tours in Stones history."

Jagger agrees.

"Yeah. I think the album really stands up; it's a great album," he says in a 20-minute interview that will screen with the concert film. "We'd played quite a lot of it on this show, and it was really new and fresh."

"We hadn't done it, obviously, more than a few times, and so you see it just starting to take shape. So I think it's really interesting."

The film finds Britain's original punks showing solidarity with the new punk rebellion. One example is Jagger sporting Vivienne Westood's famous "Destroy" swastika T-shirt - the same one sported by the Sex Pistols, who had broken up six months earlier.

"He probably wore the same outfit every show," joked pianist Ian McLagan of the Faces, who played on the Some Girls album and the entire '78 tour.

The band initially had tried to use Peter Tosh's pianist.

"I was a last-minute addition. They thought it'd be simpler just to get me and teach me some reggae," said McLagan, a friend of "the blues cover band" since '62.

Rehearsals took place in Woodstock, N.Y.

"I didn't know every song the Stones had ever recorded, and suddenly we're playing anything they fancied," he said. "It was a loose jam in lots of ways."

But McLagan recognized the Stones had reached a new plateau with Some Girls. At sessions in Paris, he played on Miss You, Just My Imagination and Start Me Up, which wouldn't be released until Tattoo You three years later.

"I think it was an amazing turnaround for them," he said.

"They hadn't met the punks. I hadn't met the punks, none of us. We were kind of in another world. All I read about the punks was that they hated previous generations, which was us. But they didn't hate the Stones or the Faces, they hated all the prog rock."

Onstage in Fort Worth, the Stones showed where their loyalties stood, opening with Chuck Berry's Let It Rock and including his Sweet Little Sixteen. But for Some Girls, it was a virtual greatest-hits trip. In the background, sixth Stone Ian Stewart was on keyboards, too.

By this point, Jagger was less James Brown and whirling dervish and had clearly entered his aerobic-exercise mode (fueled by a Rudolf Nureyev obsession), prancing, vamping, mugging, tip-toeing, shadowboxing, cheerleading - and blowing kisses and occasionally spanking guitarist Ron Wood.

Fiddler Doug "The Ragin' Cajun" Kershaw appears in the film playing on Far Away Eyes. The Stones had caught his show in New Orleans and invited him.

"Let me tell you, I've only been nervous three times in my life," Kershaw said. "The second time was doing The Ed Sullivan Show. The third time was doing the Rolling Stones."

Kershaw, whose latest album is called The Clash Of Musical Cultures, says he meshed perfectly with the Stones. No clash there.

"They just brought me backstage to the dressing room and showed me the song," he said. "I'd never heard it. 'Here's the song. Do your thing.'

"They're a bunch of pros. Bill Wyman and I became quite good friends. He loved western swing. He brought me to his room and played me so many Bob Wills records. The Stones are one of my favorites. They're very nice guys. When they kick back, they kick back. That's my kind of people."

It Only Took 33 Years For Dallas Filmmakers to Get Due Credit For "Lost" Stones Concert Film

By Robert Wilonsky Tue., Oct. 18 2011

http://goo.gl/5ZaXo
NCM

A reminder: Tonight and tonight only is that big-screen screening of The Rolling Stones: Some Girls Live In Texas, shot during the band's Will Rogers Auditorium stopover on July 18, 1978, under the moniker the "London Green Shoed Cowboys." It will screen simultaneously on 300 screens nationwide before going international, then making its way to home-video release in conjunction with the re-release of a souped-up Some Girls in November.

But here's a little-known fact -- little known, because it's not mentioned once in publicity materials dispatched in advance of the nationwide one-off tonight: Some Girls Live was directed by Dallas documentarian Lynn Leneau and her all-local crew of shooters, among them Phillip Thomas, the man holding the hand-held that was in Mick Jagger's face for the entirety of the show. Thing is, none of them knew the film was finally being released till, oh, three weeks ago.

"Not even then, really," says Leneau. She tells Unfair Park today she first heard about the film's release when a reporter from a New Zealand newspaper called to find out if she's the Lynn Leneau who shot the movie in 1978. She said yes, of course she was. "But why do you want to know?" she wondered.

"Because there's a rumor it's being re-released," he told her.

"And I told him, 'It's never been released,'" she recalls now, laughing.

The question is: Why not? Well, actually, that's just one of the questions surrounding a movie whose makers had no idea it was being released till days ago. Another question: Are they getting paid for it all these years later?

"No."

That's the short answer given by Jack Calmes, who, in 1978, was Leneau's husband -- and the man who made the film happen in the first place.

In 1978, Calmes was president of Showco, the famed lighting and sound company that brought rock and roll into the arenas for the likes of Led Zeppelin, the Who, ZZ Top, Van Halen and the Stones. Showco designed the stage for the Some Girls tour -- very film-noir, says Calmes, "very Dashiell Hammett." He thought it would make for one hell of a movie. That, and "I thought Some Girls was far and away the band's best record."

Back then, Calmes and Mick Jagger were tight, so much so that when the band got into Dallas for its Fort Worth gig, Calmes met Jagger at the Fairmont. They had plans: Bobby "Blue" Bland at the Longhorn Ballroom.

"We were the only two white guys in there," Calmes says. "I introduced Mick to Bobby and Al 'TNT' Braggs. Then we went back to the Fairmont, and pitched him on the film. In those days, no one let cameras in close positions Bands didn't let them onstage. It was a rock-and-roll taboo. They were all afraid of stuff getting pirated. I said to Mick, 'But you know all of us, this is a safe environment, and I've got the best guys together to do this.' And we also owned a 24-track recorder, so it was in sync with all five cameramen. All pros."

Six hours before showtime, Jagger finally agreed to let Calmes's crew shoot the show at Will Rogers. Theirs was a handshake deal. No paperwork was ever signed.

"And this will go down as the best one they ever did," Calmes said. "The show was just so ... unpretentious." He laughs."Mick was so hungover and fucked up from having been up with me all night till the next day, when he finally said yes."

There were a few details to be worked out, chief among them getting Jagger to let Thomas shoot him center-stage, from mere feet away. Jagger hated the idea of a camera in his face. He scoffed. He moaned. He said no many times.

"Jack spent all night trying to talk Mick into letting me be there," says Thomas, who served as the film's director of photography. "Lynn says she did it. Jack says he did it. But nonetheless, part of the agreement came down to: If I was hand-held, then he'd let me be there. There was a little runway that came off the stage -- 20 to 30 feet long, six-feet wide. I was standing right on the first row, and he was four, five feet away from me. I'm looking straight up at him."

Leneau then spent the next few months editing footage. She and Calmes, who divorced long ago, screened the film in Dallas a few times. Then they took a cut featuring five songs to Los Angeles, where ads promoting the film began appearing in trade mags and on billboards.

"We had a screening in a sound stage in old Hollywood, which was the first time I even talked to Mick," Leneau says. "He was concerned. It was one show. It wasn't like where you shot five concerts and picked the best from each one. And I heard they thought they looked too old. But I told him we could clean some stuff up if they gave me more time."

Eventually, she and Calmes say separately, one of the Stones' reps told them: Hand over the film. It's going on the shelf. Forever.

"I just felt if they gave me a little more time ..." Leneau says. "Because it was good."

Decades passed. Calmes's Showco morphed into Syncrolilte; he still works with the Stones, matter of fact, lighting all the band's tours. He and Lynn split; 15 years ago, she gave up filmmaking and editing and started her own landscaping business. Thomas continues to work in the film business. Everyone had given up on the film ever being released. They forgot all about it. Till, that is, a few weeks ago.

When Calmes got wind of it, he reached out to the Stones via email. He wanted to make sure his ex and her crew were properly credited. He also wanted to make sure they were all getting paid, because far as anyone recalls, maybe they made a collective $1,000 for their work in July 1978. (Calmes says the Stones also reimbursed him for renting the film equipment -- $10,000, if that.) Calmes says he's heard from Jagger that they'll get some kind of credit; money remains an entirely separate issue.

"It's called rock-star amnesia," Calmes says. "And I heard back from Mick: 'We'll give you some kind of credit.' But there's no excuse for them not remembering. This wasn't a situation where you'd forget, even if you're a rock star. I worked on him relentlessly for a long time to let us shoot this film."

Calmes isn't out to bad-mouth his old friend, but "I didn't do this for my health," he says. "I thought it would be a great piece of work, and really wanted to make something of it, but the deal was if he didn't want to do it, it was his call. I told Mick [via email], 'As I remember it, it was a handshake deal. If something happened in the future we'd discuss it.' And something happened -- 34 years later. And that's a long time. But you don't forget something this monumental."

Leneau and Thomas and others who worked on the film are planning on attending tonight's screening at the Cinemark West Plano off the Dallas North Tollway; so too is Calmes's former partner Angus Wynne and old friends who attended the small show. Thomas is excited to see it.

"They shelved it because they looked old," he says. "Now, of course, they actually look old, and they went back and saw how bitching and bad-ass and cool they were back then and said, 'Wow, we don't have baggy eyes, gray hair, and we're skinny as shit.'"

Leneau, though, she's a little more ... apprehensive. Because she doesn't even know what her movie looks like anymore. "I could go to parties while I was editing and had Mick Jagger down," she says. "People cheered. And I listened to all the music over and over again." But she hasn't seen it in decades. And she's not even sure whether the film that screens tonight bears any resemblance to her cut.

"I have heard my name is on it," she says. "I heard that from Jack. We have a friend who saw it in London. And this is fun. I'm glad it happened finally. It'll bring a bunch of people together at one time who haven't seen each other in a long time. All these people will be together tonight to see it, and that's what is important. And I have the other side of me that wants it to be good, that doesn't want it to be MTV-ish. I just want it to be like it was."

Brilliant.
The band is on fire from the first note of Let It Rock to the last riff of JJF.
The stage is right on top of the crowd.
Jagger is a demon, Keith is the pirate, Bill barely smiles, Charlie is very animated.
Ron Wood steals the show.  He is fantastic.
His playing is killer, he has excellent solos, great interplay.
Hard to fathom he was a hired gun-he clearly fits in so much.
Jagger really has a great time with Ronnie, beating him with a towel, just about another
kiss on the lips, as well at one point grabbing Ronnie's crotch...
Keith is the master, chopping & slashing the guitar as if it is giving him electroshock's
The video quality is outstandingly clear, compared to the six year earlier L & G
Good lighting, Jagger is high in the viewing, not as much as I expected.
It is eerie to see some of the songs in such great quality, which we've
all seen forever in grainy video.
Star Star was killer.
The 7 song Some Girls tracks were superb.
Imagination was on point, Miss You without filler is great, much like
the long released studio version.
During Far Away Eyes, something goes wrong with the piano Jagger is playing,
so he scoots over to Mac's keyboard, where he plays the song.
Doug Kershaw on fiddle appears during the back part of this song.
The warhorse segment at the end blazes.
Up front, the interview with Jagger was good, he seems very shy about this.
He really mocks the outfits he wore.
I noticed in the ending credits Honky Tonk Women gets "AKBCO" credit, where the other
Klein songs receive "ABKCO" credit...
All said.....  Outstanding & RONNIE STEALS THE SHOW!

This is the must own video for a Stones junkie, you will not tire of this.

Some Girls soundtrack played for 30 minutes before the show, with
adverts for the dvd & SG remastered release along with trivia about the band popping up on the screen.
Here's a screen shot I took, sorry a bit grainy....

Feral. Raucous. Raw. Exhilarating.

No trickeration, bells or whistles, just the unbridled power of The World's Greatest Rock & Roll Band firing on all cylinders, 18 July Anno Domini 1978.

Best Stones film ever.

They really were twenty feet tall, too.

Would I be right in saying that this is the first time the Stones have officially released a concert (on audio or DVD) which hasnt been edited in any way?

The only other one I can think of would be the recent TAMI show release, but that was only a six song set.

Every other release has been an edited release taken from multiple shows or a shortened version of one concert.

I know that they included every song that was played at the Rock n Roll Circus on the official release, but most/all of the songs they performed that night had several 'takes'.....

the only editing was some audience noise(who cares?) between songs. none of it was chopped up like the dreadful LET'S SPEND THE NIGHT TOGETHER. Much better filmed than I would ever imagined. a little grain on the film in some shots, but other shots looked high def all the way. I am usually very critical of the stones on film, but I was pretty fucking stocked for several hours after seeing it. I was 16 during the tour which I never got to see, and Rolling Stone magazine was brutal on them/ comparing there 75 minute set to Springsteens 3 hour show at the time.
Bottom line- it was a band with no gimics. they rocked, and they did it in 75 minutes with a total primary focus on doing new songs. It was just fun. Some guy commented on the way out " they dont make em like that anymore"   Damn right they dont.

When the Whip Comes Down

By Raoul Hernandez, Wed. Oct. 19

http://goo.gl/NYeX3

“If the band’s a bit off tonight, it’s because we spent all our energy last night... fucking.” Mick Jagger leading the Rolling Stones through a July 18 performance in Fort Worth on 1978’s Some Girls tour, a DVD tie-in to the LP’s new deluxe reissue and screening one-night-only in Austin yesterday, is a bit off alright. Off the charts.

Last year’s roll out of Ladies & Gentlemen The Rolling Stones, a 1973 concert film capturing the Fort Worth stop of the previous year’s Exile On Main Street tour, followed the now-standard limited theatrical run for contemporary rock & roll docs. Some Girls Live in Texas, due as a stand-alone release Nov. 21, has at least one skinny pant leg up on its predecessor: It’s never been seen or released. When the music business talks about a band’s “vaults,” this is what everyone’s holding their breath for.

In fact, the 7:30pm screening last night in South Austin at the Metropolitan 14 brought out a full-house. Nearly two hours later, after a new introductory interview with Sir Mick (a device employed with the restored Ladies & Gentlemen) and the Stones then steamrolling a 16-song set, KUT jock and forever Chronicle Music team player Jay Trachtenberg put it best. “I’m exhausted and it was only a film!”

Bootlegs from the 24-date '78 tour – imagine, a month of U.S. shows for a No. 1 album – reveal the same number of songs in 80 minutes, the hit list more or less set in stone other than the subbing in and out of covers. (Locate the Capital Theatre/Passaic, New Jersey show. It’ll melt your stereo.) Fortunately, the heart of the performances starred eight of 10 Some Girls tracks. Only the title cut and Keith Richards’ post-heroin-bust boast, “Before They Make Me Run,” didn’t make the cut. The band actually pulled out the former tune during its 2002/03 Live Licks tour, while the latter later became a favorite of the band’s.

Framed by Chuck Berry covers, opener “Let It Rock” and main set closer “Sweet Little Sixteen,” the show’s ferociously punkish punch owes much of its raw edge to the band’s seminal influence. At every turn, Richards tears off lead runs beginning and ending at Berry, whose 85th birthday was yesterday, appropriately enough. Otherwise, Ronnie Wood fires most of the lead guitar work, starting with his ripping slide work on “Let It Rock” successor “All Down The Line.” He also becomes Mick’s onstage whipping boy, enduring all sorts of show hazing and harassment from the frontman. Unperturbed, Woody duets with Jagger on “Star Star,” wafts pedal steel on country bumpkin “Far Away Eyes,” and fights off the singer during Richards’ “Happy.”

Glimpsed only briefly but carrying “Miss You” with demonic keyboard funk is local British Invasion icon Ian McLagan, while Charlie Watts, who’s always driven the Stones like god’s own Transportation Secretary, gets exactly two close-ups during the two-song encore, “Brown Sugar” and “Jumping Jack Flash.” No matter. This is Jagger’s show all down the line. As the posters for Ladies & Gentlemen proclaimed, “Jagges sings! Jagger dances! Jagger explodes! Jagger delivers the 15 hits that shook the world of music.” Six years after the Exile trek, the only thing that’s changed are the clothes and an additional song.

Some Girls remains the Rolling Stones last great studio album, its 1981 commercial topper Tattoo You scraped together from the vault with new additions. “When The Whip Comes Down” matches Let It Bleed’s vicious “Midnight Rambler” in beatdown even as “Beast Of Burden,” delivered by Jagger here like he’s making up his plea on the spot, soothes the band’s savage beasts. Temptations cover “Just My Imagination (Running Away With Me),” whose expletive punchline burst the theater into laughter, grooves perfectly out of “Miss You,” whereas “Shattered” and “Respectable” froth back-to-back. “Far Away Eyes” into Robert Johnson’s “Love In Vain” mines American roots like the pioneers.

Some Girls Live In Texas, just how we like ‘em.

Highlights from “The Rolling Stones: Some Girls Live in Texas”

by Hector Saldana
10/19/2011

The Rolling Stones aren’t known for soft-focus moments.

But there’s a surprisingly touching one in the concert film “The Rolling Stones: Some Girls Live in Texas” — filmed at Will Rogers Centre in Fort Worth on July 18, 1978 — which comes comes at the very end.

The film screened nationally this week on a one-night-only basis.

It’s a lingering shot of a smiling Ian Stewart, the ‘sixth Stone’ founding member who played piano and recorded with them, peeking over the massive Ampeg amps to stare at the cheering crowd after a wild rendition of “Jumpin’ Jack Flash.”

Keith Richards always considered the Stones to be Stewart’s band.  And obviously, on this night, Stewart approved. (For his part, Keith Richards had his Fender Telecaster equipped with two capos on its neck to handle the ferocious strumming).

“We were so engrossed in the music that nothing else mattered,” recalled pianist Ian McLagan, who also played on the ’78 “Some Girls” tour.

But that’s as sentimental as it gets.  The 17-song set blisters and rolls, though there are moments of hilarity, too.  At one point, Mick Jagger dances over to guitarist Ron Wood only to grab the cigarette dangling out of his mouth and then stomp it into the floor.

Jagger, a few days shy of his 35th birthday, is untouchable.  The newly restored concert film shows why he’s rock’s greatest frontman.

His abandon is evident throughout, but especially on the “Some Girls” material. There’s an edge to the performance and Jagger’s vocals are delivered flat-out.

He’s not perfect. Jagger stumbles briefly on a few if the lines of Chuck Berry’s “Let It Rock,” which opened the show.  And it looks like he might be reading some lyrics located near Charlie Watts’ drum kit right before attacking “Shattered.”

There’s a flashback moment, too: On “Sweet Little Sixteen,” Jagger clutches the microphone stand with the same relish and James Brown swagger that he showed on the 1964 T.A.M.I concert.

What’s it like playing with the Rolling Stones?  “I can’t believe the energy that Mick Jagger has. Never mind the fac that he’s singing live, it’s not like Madonna or something. It’s not bullshit,” said McLagan. “This guy is singing incredibly, but he’s singing live while he’s prancing about. Remember, he’s already ran five miles. That’s what he does in the morning!

“It’s unbelivable. There’s nobody like him.”

Concert film captures the Stones’ 1978 performance in Fort Worth

By Preston Jones
10/19/2011

http://goo.gl/7X1Wf
June 17, 1978 - Philadelphia PA (AP)

“Quite intense” is how Mick Jagger remembers the summer of 1978.

His band, the Rolling Stones, had just released 'Some Girls;, a follow-up to 1976′s 'Black And Blue', and was touring America for the first time in three years. It was nearing the end of the 'Exile On Main Street' era, a tumultuous period of drug problems, tax dilemmas and intra-band squabbles.

The ’78 schedule wasn’t too grueling — 25 dates in two months, including a July 18 stop at Fort Worth’s Will Rogers Memorial Auditorium — but, of course, the offstage antics were enough to bring even the hardiest rock stars nearly to their knees.

It’s the wearied yet exhilarated faces that stick with you the most in the new concert film 'Some Girls Live in Texas', which screened nationally Tuesday.

Captured by a Dallas film crew but officially unreleased for the better part of three decades, this document of a band near its prime is being released Nov. 21 on Blu-ray and DVD in conjunction with a reissue of 'Some Girls'.

The remastered film, decked out with an immaculate image and a roaring soundtrack, was preceded by a 15-minute interview with Jagger, which was filmed in August with journalist Paul Sexton.

Sexton prefaced his chat with a few clips from the ’78 Fort Worth gig. Cutting from the youthful, lascivious Jagger to the extremely well-worn, modern-day version was downright shocking.

“It’s not sloppy,” Jagger said of the Fort Worth show. “Everyone’s having fun, but you can see they’re concentrating.”

And indeed, there’s an almost workmanlike feel to the set list, which pulled heavily from the then-fresh 'Some Girls'. The core group (Jagger, Keith Richards, Charlie Watts, Ronnie Wood and Bill Wyman) was augmented by pros like Ian McLagan. In a neat twist, several of the smaller shows, including Fort Worth, were performed under a pseudonym, the London Greenshoe Cowboys.

But that gimmick was the only one in sight (a far cry from the Stones’ later years). Powered by the phenomenal 'Some Girls' (which produced classics like 'Beast Of Burden'), the Stones appear burned-out but rock-solid throughout the performance, which swings from punk-inspired fury ('Shattered') to beautifully battered country ('Far Away Eyes').

A visceral document of an era lost to memory, Jagger fairly understated the electricity generated by the Stones: “This particular era was, musically, very interesting.”

Stones In Top Form On ‘Some Girls’

http://goo.gl/aAjHJ

October 24, 2011
By Scott Smith

A claim that The Rolling Stones were every bit as great in 1978 as they were in 1972 might be considered blasphemy in some corners of the rock ’n’ roll world.

Most hard-core fans politely nod at the contributions of Stones’ guitarist Ron Wood these days while pledging their longtime allegiance to the group’s 1969-1974 era, a time when technically great guitarist Mick Taylor was in the rowdy fold.

However, the recent big-screen viewing of “The Rolling Stones: Some Girls — Live in Texas 1978” at Fayetteville’s Razorback Cinema concert film begs some serious re-evaluation. Yes, the Rock and Roll Hall of Famers played nearly flawlessly on the “Ladies and Gentlemen ... The Rolling Stones” DVD shot on the 1972 tour, but they seem musically meaner throughout the “Some Girls” film, with Mick Jagger morphing from a street-fighting man into a punk-loving frontman. Even drummer Charlie Watts, the most laid-back Stone, bashes away at his drums — watch how aggressively he strikes his cymbals and tom-tom, resulting in his greatest filmed performance yet.

Filmed in Fort Worth, Texas, and set to be released on DVD and Blu-ray on Nov. 21, “Some Girls — Live in Texas ’78” also showcases six-string outlaw Keith Richards in near-top condition. Allegedly free of his decade-long heroin habit, Richards slashes away at his Telecaster as musical director, and his smoker’s cough of a singing voice is the perfect fit for the evening’s rapid-fire take of “Happy.”

Standing statuesque along with Jagger, Richards, Watts and Wood is bassist Bill Wyman, who, despite having two injured fingers taped together, rustles up some low-end fun on a prancing reading of “Tumblin’ Dice” and then-new tracks “When the Whip Comes Down,” “Beast of Burden,” “Miss You,” “Respectable,” “Shattered.” One flaw in the film is there’s not enough screen time given to Watts, Wyman and touring keyboardists Ian McLagan (ex-Faces) and Ian Stewart, and at times, Jagger’s playful, on-stage bullying of Wood grows a tad stale as the set list moves forward.

Although the “Some Girls” document lacks the epic-sized flashiness of the group’s “Let’s Spend the Night Together” concert movie from 1981, it packs much more of a bruising punch. It acts as a fantastic snapshot of The Rolling Stones defiantly staking their territory as a tornado of punk rock, rap and disco threatens to engulf them.

In the very beginning of the movie when MICK gives the interview, it looks like MICK has had some Botox injections in his face. I'm almost sure of it. His face looks smoother and less facial expression, not my old MICK, and I am kinda upset because MICK was probably persuaded by L'Wren to do it! She hangs out with the Hollywood crowd and they all get Botox on a regular basis. The good news is that it wears off, so I hope he stops botoxing his amazing 'normal' face, which has charactor, and I like his natural wrinkled face so much more than the fake Botox look. Who else noticed this?

I think '85-'86 was a lost cause!

'78 wasnt even a full American tour when you think about it. Just over six weeks, about 25 shows, all one night stands (apart from Anaheim), a random mix of theatres, arenas and stadiums with no real concern about whether it met ticket demand or not (the only New York show was in a theatre that held just over 3,000 people).

From what I remember, it was thrown together pretty quickly too. All very rock n roll and crazy when you think about it, and the last tour they did in the 'pre-sponsorship' days.  Just going out and playing nearly all of the songs off their new album one after the other, and if people didnt like it - tough titty.

Groovy times.

I wish the Stones would still play nearly the entire album when they tour behind new releases like they did back then. It shows a great deal of faith in their own material, but I understand it's tough to charge 500 bucks a seat to hear a new album and not the hits.

Although it hasn't stopped U2 from playing huge chunks of material from their new albums.  I seem to recall they opened shows with several new songs somewhere back in the late 90's.

Doesn't have to be either/or when it comes to hits and new stuff. The problem, as they've gotten older, has been the length of shows.

At the end of the last tour, they were playing 18 or 19 songs for less than two hours. You need that extra half-hour or so to find the right balance. I think even we hardcore fans want to hear at least some of the warhorses, not to mention the obscure stuff. I just don't think it can be done in a satisfying way in less than two hours.

U2 still do that.

The way round it is simple. Dont charge 500 bucks for a ticket. When you do that, the expectation levels of the audience goes sky high and their sense that you owe them something is out of hand.  Effectively, the band loses control of their own show.

The Stones shouldnt feel obliged to be a jukebox for anyone. They're far far better than that. If by this stage, ticket buyers cant grasp that they have more than 12-15 songs in their back catalogue, thats their problem. It shouldnt be the band's.

And if the songs are good enough - and they are! - then it shouldnt be an issue. Maybe the lazy sods in question might actually buy the records.

They never shoved a new album down their audience's throats before or since like they did in 1978.  Pretty much half the show consisted of songs released that month.

Is it a coincidence that 'Some Girls' was their most successful record at the time, even though it was a relatively short tour? I don't think so.

Hopefully on their next tour, they'll find a way to claim their own music back and do what the hell they want. They've earned that right.

One Night Only: The Rolling Stones 'Some Girls' Live in Texas '78

Nov 1, 2011
by Jonathan Kosakow

http://goo.gl/sHLQF

In 1978 the rise of punk and popularity of disco were about to kick the Rolling Stones out of poignancy. But then Some Girls flew to the top of the American charts, and the Stones short US tour is widely hailed as one of their most musically impressive.

In 1978 the rise of punk and popularity of disco were about to kick the Rolling Stones out of poignancy. They had been one of the most successful bands in the world for the previous decade plus, but their rock and roll was growing old even as they held the title of last relics of the British Invasion after the Beatles broke up a few years prior. Meanwhile, Keith Richards’s heroin arrest the year before had put the foundation of the band in jeopardy. It not only caused internal tension, but the simple act of maintaining work visas to tour in the United States became much more difficult. At some point everything has to come to an end, and the release of and impending tour for Some Girls came with pressure. Apparently, it’s pressure that helped the Stones thrive.

Some Girls flew to the top of the American charts, and the Stones short US tour is widely hailed as one of their most musically impressive. Ronnie Wood had replaced Mick Taylor on guitar a couple of years earlier, and his style rejuvenated the band in just about every way. Every aspect of their release from turmoil is present in the filmed performance of Some Girls: Live From Texas—a full-length feature film that shows the concert in its entirety, preceded by a recent interview with Mick Jagger. A one-night-only showing of the film played in movie theaters around the country on October 18.

The tour included performances in venues of all sizes from small theaters like the one captured for this film in Fort Worth, to larger arenas and stadiums. As Jagger pointed out during the interview, the differences in venues kept things fresh for the band—they had to change their style of crowd interaction each night, and the songs that worked well in small rooms didn’t transfer well to the large open air stadiums. Every performance was something was new for them.

This night in Fort Worth was indeed something special. The band played every tune to its ultimate potential. Jagger was unstoppable, leading the Stones through every bar, every verse, every section. He paraded on stage like it was the last time he’d ever get to do it, obviously unaware that those very moves would be the inspiration for an embarrassing top ten hit 25 years later (have you heard “Moves Like Jagger”? It’s quite possibly the worst song of the still-young decade). He danced and jumped from note one till the end. He answered the crowd’s cheers, and he deferred to emotion. Front and center alongside him were Wood and Richards—each note-perfect throughout. Trading rhythm and lead parts sometimes mid-solo, if you closed your eyes it would have been hard to tell who was playing which part. Richards could hardly stand still—with each throw of his guitar he jumped practically from one side of the stage to the other. And though Bill Wyman hardly moved from his spot in front of the speaker, his bass was turned up perfectly in the mix to truly show any audience member just how important a solid bassline is to a Stones song.

Versions of “Honky Tonk Woman” and “Tumbling Dice” sent shivers through my spine as I sat in the dark theater and watched the performance on screen. I had thought “Beast of Burden” was a great song on record—I was wrong. Live it takes on a new meaning altogether. But the best was “Miss You”. Obviously a tune close to Jagger’s heart, as he looked out towards the crowd and sang the second verse, “I’ve been walking in Central Park / Singing in the dark / People think I’m crazy,” he made you think he had actually gone crazy, and he was proud of it. The four-on-the-floor drumbeat, which Jagger references in the interview before the concert footage, keeps the jam going for a while after the close of the song, and nobody wants it to end. Even Jagger, who is left stumbling around the stage, crawling towards the crowd, starts running in place, flailing his arms and legs wildly to the beat until he somehow finds his microphone and starts crooning along with the melody. Of the five or ten people in theater that night with me (yes, only five or ten), we all looked at our neighbor and just said, “Wow”.

Jagger’s interaction with his band mates provided some of the more entertaining moments of the film. He grabbed Wood inappropriately, but then brushed it off like it was nothing. He once leaned in close puckering his lips, to which Wood turned away gently. At another point, he sauntered over and picked a cigarette out of Wood’s hand, only to throw it to the ground and stomp it out. While the two guitarists Richards and Wood played together like old friends, Jagger and Richards hardly made eye contact. Wood was the glue that bound them.

As the night grew nearer to a close, the mayhem only got better. Jagger started the evening in a loose sports coat, t-shirt, black leather pants and cap, but by the end had stripped down to only his pants. He used his shirt—a white tee emblazoned with “DESTROY” above a swastika—to fan and then whip Wood as he soloed. It’s most likely that all his other clothes ended up in the hands of a fan, or ripped to shreds somewhere in the crowd.

To close out the show, in a moment of kindness and/or madness, Jagger decided to throw buckets of water out at the crowd. Of course, the already riled up audience drank it up (no pun intended), and howled along with him. For me, the only disappointment was that I was not alongside them, but instead in a movie theater, in Denver years afterwards, left to walk around the cold, quiet city on a Tuesday evening.

Thankfully, the film will always be there.

Just back. To sum it up in one sentence ...

THAT'S MY STONES

Absolutely brilliant. The best Stones concert DVD/film (I'm excluding 'Gimme Shelter' as its a documentary) I've ever seen. Took me back to a year when I really fell in love with this band.

There were times when I - and some of the five friends I went with - had to restrain ourselves from getting out of our seats and giving a standing ovation.

Just when you think you've been a fan for so long and collected so many videos and cd's that nothing they put out will ever hit you full in the face again, they come up with a gem like this.

Punk was meant to blow old farts like these into oblivion? Hah!

33 years on and I knew I was right all along and the posers were wrong. There was no one cooler in 1978 than the Rolling fucking Stones.

No idea, mate. Havent listened to Handsome Girls in a while, and was concentrating more tonight on just enjoying the movie on it's own merits. I'm sure I'll find time to compare after the release date.

Well, it was my turn to see the concert movie tonite at a cinema here in Adelaide. Just as with L&G last year there were only about 20 or so people there but that didnt bother me or my chums :)
The Stones certainly kicked arse back then and other than Far away eyes, I couldnt really pick too many faults other than Mick's vinyl Trackie dacks :blankfriggingstare1 Far away Eyes just seem to lack something but it was ok.........

But I wasnt there in attendance to to be a critic and look for faults, I enjoyed the songs performed from some girls and the inter-play between Ronnie and Keith and Mick was great to watch, something that I had not seen in concert footage from previous years / concerts gone by. It certainly was a new era for the band. I also enjoyed the chuck berry tracks and cannot wait to get the DVD when it comes out to watch and listen to it all again.

The music I thought was tight and a great solid performance by the band.

Dont have a favourite song cos it was all good :)

My friend suggested to me that in all possibilty Mick couldve been banging Ronnie cos he couldnt stop touching him and posing for him etc but I put it down to Mick being like a caged animal and not having enough space to really let loose and run around.......what more can I say, BRILLIANT!

I got the Blu Ray/CD combo... My kid is home sick, he has control of PS3, so i'm listening to the CD...
It is mixed way different than my Handsome girls, I jumped right back to my boots on first song... wasn't even sure it was the same show... I was really hoping it would be a much better/different mix... Definitely different... Hope I like it more in the long run... can make out the edits, between songs already, they really had to shave this down, to make it fit on one disc.

to your question Nellie, I had the official tour program a few years ago, sold it b/c I knoew I would destroy it, i'm prett sure, what we have is a mini replica of it, the other booklet the bigger one, pre tour statemnt letter to media...  then there's a article I'm about to read, then ticket stubs and what-not...

american punk, influenced the rise of punk in the UK, hello Ramones!!! and continued in the USA, despite no mainsteam success... while in THe UK, it was alot about chart success and fashion statements... Weird he went there in the article... Keith was correct, everyone stole his looks and chops for sure, considering he taught them how to steal in the first place, very appropriate!!!

The bonus stuff is also good.
Wished they'd included the deli skit
The 20/20 segment was only about 5 min long.
Normal 20/20 segments are at least 11-13 min long
It would have been great to see it all.
I'd never viewed the Woodstock studio footage
Geraldo Rivera had exclusive Stones access back in the day.
I recall a 20/20 segment on the '75 tour from

QQQ...Does or did Mick ever smoke? Casually...frantically...on/off stage...not just as a fashion accessory

The question comes up because during the Texas show...about the 34 min mark in last half of Miss You,

Ronnie seems to be having some sort of difficulty playing and smoking...

He gestures to Mick who then takes the cigarette from him, examines it and tosses it down and steps on it...

a few other times Ronnie offers Mick a drag and he refuses. That makes sense since he is in the middle of a song...

Yes, Mick used to smoke in the 60's, I saw lots of interviews with him smoking, don't know when he gave it up, I guess him being such a energy person, it doesn't suit him, it's like a long distance runner smoking.

Got the Blu-Ray, great concert, crap video quality, well not crap but I don't see any HD there, it's DVD quality, at best, hard to believe they started from a 16mm movie that potentially has a lot more resolution? Oh well...

Mick was still down and dirty in those days wasn't he, wonder what possessed him to become "corporate Mick" in 1981, too bad Bill German didn't have anything to say about that in his book.
