Title: Tattoo You at 30
Post by nankerphelge on Aug 30th, 2011 at 9:59am
Amazing that it has been that long.

I remember I was driving my 1975 Plymouth Duster into the parking lot of Mohawk Mall in Niskayuna, NY when I first heard Start Me Up.  I had changed the station and came into the song half-way thru, but knew who it was immediately.

I named that tune in one note...

I remember playing it pretty much non-stop at college.
Freshman year and I beat the hell out of it leading up to the 9/27 Buffalo show (my first).

I still give it pretty good play in my Stones rotation ... especially side 2 -- some nice easy summer tuneage in there!!!

We used to ride baby....

(bizarre statement undoubtedly lost on newer posters...)

happy birthday to my little friend Tattoo. My little brother brought this disc home and it got a lotta of play in our house, the excitement of the upcoming tour with the press conferance, still got the magazine from that somewhere also. remember standing or giving up standing in a line for tix that ran around the block at the orpheum in boston, then all the rumours of a show at either the olde garden or on the common and mayor kevin shooting that down? also the possibility of a club or theater show after the Sir Morgans gig in Worcester. Got to see them finally in Hartford then not for almost eight long years..........

Just great. Closed the deal for me at age 15.  Played side 1 daily for months. Obsessed with the tour, STILL have the US magazine special. Recorded Hampton '81 as it happened onto cassette off the radio.  Finally purchased  a black Telecaster '72 Custom 10 years ago. Picked up a late 70 's MXR phase off eBay 2 years ago.  Keith at his absolute coolest.  Jersey Devil, Ride like the Wind, etc., etc . . .still can't get enough of it 30 years on.

I remember the WMMR preview out of Philly, everyone was recording it to cassete, and they kept playing WMMR tags every 30 seconds or so, in an attempt to prevent pirating... everything was electric, especially in my bedroom... being 13 and adoring them, was a great time... seemed like a million years from the time the tour was announced til we got our tix, and then the long wait for show day.... and forever for them to take the stage that day too.

Just who is that on the cover?? I know that is Keith in the green...but the red is lost on me. If that is Jagger...I don't see it at all.

Please explain someone.

It's Jagger. Who else could it be? You wouldn't see Charlie, Bill or Ronnie up front like that.

Imagine 1981 Jagger with the 1989 hairstyle and you should be able to make him out.  :blankfriggingstare1

Tattoo You is not just one of my favourites, it really means a lot to me.

On September 6, 1981 I moved to New York City to live there for a couple of years, I lived in Riverdale, in the Bronx, just one block from the Engineering Building at Manhattan College where I was a student at the Graduate Division.

I didn’t know the Stones just released Tattoo You; I bought a radio with tape player the very first day and turned the radio on (WPLJ), two or three songs after I turned it on I heard the Stones’ “Start me up” the next day I bought the tape and I played it several times a day, some weeks later I bought a turntable and bought the record, some years later the CD and some years later another CD. I still have that tape but with no cover and in these conditions LOL

:wtf3

It was the soundtrack of those first days in NYC along with Zappa’s “You are what You is”, “Start me up” was played at every party at college and at the local bars.

Since the record didn’t have lyrics and it was hard to me to get it I bought those old magazine with rock lyrics and they still there inside the album, then I was translating the lyrics with a dictionary of slangs, clichés and idiomatic expressions, I found the meaning of “hang fire” for example LOL. AT the beginning side 1 was my side, I didn’t like side 2, those falsettos didn’t turn me on, some weeks later that was my side!

Didn’t know it was made with a lot of old outtakes until the mid 90s!

That was also the first time I saw the Stones live

Since I couldn’t get tickets for the shows at the MSG, we traveled to Philadelphia for the opening show of the tour!! I was really far from the stage but enjoyed the show to the extreme and later I got tickets for the Stones at one of the shows at the MSG at $40 USD (face value was something like $17 USD) again far from stage but I was IN babies

We need another album like that!

" Tattoo You is not just one of my favourites, it really means a lot to me.  "

Concur Voodoo .

" Tattoo You " REALLY got me hooked on the Rolling Stones .

I was just beginning my Senior Year of High School ( ..... a newly minted seventeen year old wee Joseph ) and
this album was being played in car stereos EVERYWHERE !!!!!!!

However , it was the track " Waiting On A Friend " that really got your young Joey braying " What is THIS ?!   .. !!!!!!  **** Sounds Friggin GREAT !!!!!     ******    " Who ARE these cats ?!  .. !!!!!    "

Indeed , it was not until much later that I ( Your Joey ) found out that most of these songs were tracks that the band already had in the can and " Waiting on a Friend " had its genesis  during the 1972  Kingston ,  Jamaica sessions with the great Mick Taylor .

Safe to say I pretty much bought the rest of their albums during the course of the next couple of years and finally saw them LIVE in Ames , IA 1989  (    ..... and Kansas City the next evening ) .

" Hit Me Ronnie "

O'kins ! ®

You make a bald man comb.

Surely "'tart Me Up" was the Railing Strains' finest nod to the influence of the fine and fit-as-a-fididle Joe Jagger?

Apparently, during cross country, JJ could, according to some, run backwards for almost 300 miles.

I thought it was just somebody who resembled him (Bowie).:smilemick

Like others here I rememebr the day it was released and how good it was on first hearing (esp after the disapppointment I felt with ER) and time has not diminished its appeal but rather enahnced it .

Amazing that it has been 30 years already. Some of the tracks on that album are closer to 40 years old. Time flies.

I think this is my favourite stones album, along with sticky or exile or undercover

but i've been listening to it alot this year

i remember realising i was listening to "waiting on a friend" while i was waiting on a friend to drive to see the stones in 2007,

and i played heaven over and over again earlier this year on a two hour bus ride to a work placement

then playing the rest of the album, and being amazed at how good it was - songs like tops and waiting on a friend or slave, i'm still struck by how strong these songs are

and then recently learning how to play a lot of the songs from it on guitar

also never realised it was mick on the cover, learn something every day about this wonderful album

Well...color me embarrassed!!! Maybe it's the Sci-Fi geek in me...but the cover looks like a Vulcan or possibly a bit demonic...until I saw that photo of Mick...it never made sense to me...
I, too Ginda, am speechless...Thanks for the lesson!!

Last number 1 for the Rolling Stones!

I have this data:

The German 1983 release on CD (EMI) is the first-ever  CD  issued  by  The Rolling Stones.

anyone have this cd? could scan the art?

I thought it was some kind of joke, but there are Stonesfans who after 30 years don't know it's Jagger on the artwork??  Really amazing!!!!!! You learn something new every day indeed.

Love it. Tattoo You shines from the opening riff of Start Me Up to the final note of Waiting On A friend. It's a beautifully recorded and produced set of songs, too. Never had the production sounded so crisp. Some Girls is usually cited as being the best LP since Ronnie signed up, but Tattoo You is my favourite.

"Ha....Ha". I suppose I'll never live that one down, completely. Still, I proved at least I wasn't totally crazy or the only one. Wikipedia noted it was reported to be Bowie's wife on the cover as well, if you remember correctly.

Oh well, it made for some interesting back and forth diggs -
