Title: People love to discredit The Stones ...from Ian Post by Ian Billen on Aug 18th, 2011 at 11:36pm
I met an Eagles fan the other day. I commented on his Hotel California t-shirt. We discussed the song a bit and I went on to tell him that I remember the album cover when I was a kid. I asked him if he liked The Stones any?
His response...."The Stones .... yeah yeah... they weren't as consistent as The Eagles in the seventies and now they are just rich old bastards ya-da ya-da".... All I wanted was a yes or no... It seems that people who like Led Zeppelin or The Beatles immediately go on the defensive as well, if you tell them you like The Stones. They instantly start comparing. I never do that. When someone tells me they like LZ or The Beatles or any major act I try and discuss something I enjoyed by the group. When you say your a Stones fan people get all hairy many times or start comparing an album of their preferred act to a Stones album from the same year or something along those lines. Must be a jealousy thing or something. Anybody notice the same thing? I have noticed it since I was a teenager .... Ian |

Hi Ian,
Hmm... no, personally, I think it may have just been the guy you were chatting to. Any person who has criticised the Stones in my presence or compared them unfavourably to their preferred act, has usually done so because I've just bored them rigid about Jagger and co. |

When I ask someone if they like this or that, I expect more than a simple "yes or no."

You only need to read the opening five words of Ian's post to realise that he's got fuck all to be concerned about.
That said, Stones fans can be as defensive and laughably dismissive about other acts that they see as 'rivals' as anyone else. (which I've just done, I suppose!) Music isn't a competitive sport where you're only expected to support one 'team'. |

Yes, if anyone near me is dissing/making fun of, the Stones, there will be blood.
But with todays youth, ha, it's probably better to enjoy the Stones all to yerself. Plug in flush out and fire the fucking feed. |

These people whom you refer to are mere mortals.
The cerebellum of such specimens has been corrupted. They maintain an exterior presence which is easily recognizable. Pay no attention to these miscreants, for they will not have one scintilla of hope in recovery to rationalize correct thinking. There is no hope for these individuals. This is a fact which we have realized so long ago. The Rolling Stones are the Greatest Rock N Roll Band ever. Thank you for your support & cooperation. |

_______________________ I think you took my comment literally. What I meant was I was expecting "yeah I like blah blah blah from them" or possibly "you know I never really got into them much I guess"... Instead I got criticism and comparing The Stones to The Eagles. I get that sort of thing all the time when I mention the Stones. Was wondering if anyone got the same thing... Ian |

The Rolling Stones vs. The Eagles?
Seriously? You have got to be kidding! How can you even compare? The Stones are on a whole different level! Everybody knows that! |

_______________________________ Well we all know that Gorda ... in fact, the music world knows that. However my point was I get it with Led Zeppelin ... which is "semi-" debatable and The Beatles which is really, the only real group that is in The Stones class (though I'm not much of a Beatles fan). My point was that whenever you mention your into The Stones folks kina discredit them in some way. I'm not really an Eagles fan (it's ok if you, or others are). They can't really compare to The Stones..anyone knows that much... but I wouldn't go as far as to instantly play that card. Like we say, music is an art. The most notable statement Gazza has ever made was when he once said... "there are two types of music...good and bad... " in reference to styles and such. I was more interested in talking about something we both liked in The Eagles... with the guy. Instead people like to jump to kina "pass off", or discredit the Stones if they are not Stones fans as in "well yeah They are The Stones but...ya-da ya-da ya-da ..." when you mention them. That was my point is all and I was wondering if anyone noticed the same. (btw I dig your input) Ian |

There's only the Beatles in the same class as the Stones. Other bands are fucking footnotes while the Beatles and Stones are the Encyclopaedia Britannica.
I don't even bother talking to anyone about the Stones or Beatles because I don't need outside validation or anything. They are MY bands. It doesn't get any better than having Ringo or Charlie on drums and George or Keith on guitars. |

Actually, i've had a lot of ac/dc vs Stones debates here in good old Oz over the years. I never liked Ac/dc. Found them quite dull and one dimentional.
But fuck me if i dont really like them now! I love playing along to their well known older songs. Great fun, and they have a real groove i've never appreciated until recently. I've always enjoyed drumming to their songs because its so easy, but lately i've been having a ball playing guitar to a few songs, and though not rocket science, even some simple songs have a little something in them to make them different. My sis & my niece are Beatles people. I just cant dig them at all. I understand their popularity and their importance, but i just dont dig them. Led Zep i can handle now and then in small doses, but U2 make me violently ill. At this stage of the game, i've given up trying to convert kids to my band. They just are not interested. I've even got mates who are really intelligent, talented and knowledable guitarists who say Keith is out of tune. Mate i was jamming with a few years ago tried in vain to play Brown Sugar and was infuriated that it sounded nothing like it. he goes "but i've got the chords! I know i got the chords right! And i re-tuned his other guitar ( a 73 SG if you will!) and played it for him. He just shrugged and said lets play some Steve Vai instead. I mean, fucking hell! |

The Only Bands IMO I'd every debate about being an equal, better or even in the same league with the Rolling Stones in terns of a cultural, social, or musical prevalence would be:
The Beatles The Who Led Zepplin The Byrds The Band Pink Floyd The Beach Boys and a few others but never would I entertain the thought of a comparison between The Eagles and the Stones in terns of a cultural, social, or musical prevalence. :smilestu IMO The Stones IMO the greatest ROCK N Roll band of all times are only second to one in the overall Spectrum of those 3 catergories, cultural, social, or musical prevalence. And by being second has always made them a little angrier and a little more edgier the 4 mop tops. That's what I have always loved about them. IMO I will also say that when I played live music for a paying public (during the Hotel California days), the Stones covers always got the audiences motors running. There was always a change in the feel and atmosphere of the room when we lit in to Brown Sugar or Honky Tonk Woman. We played all the above bands mentioned, and the Eagles. Now let the beatings begin. I love this place. |

Yes I agreed Honky Tonk.
But there were things these other groups added. And I would listen and entertain the debate... |
