Title: Your TOP 3 Done 2  Death Warhorses
Post by Paranoid Android on Jul 16th, 2011 at 10:05am
Gazza posted something on a different thread that prompted this thread...

What are your top 3 done to death, seen it, heard it, a million times, mailed it in, WARHORSES???
EDIT: For clarification...which are your TOP three to KEEP!!! The ones you love over and over...

Also...which ONE to RETIRE today...even for the 50th, last ever tour...not to be played

Mine are: SFTD, Tumbling Dice and Gimme Shelter...ADTL as an honorable mention, but it will never be done again  as great as Atlantic City 2006

RETIRE SMU!!!

oh...Happy Weekend everyone!!

I wouldn't call Gimmie Shelter a warhorse. They sure didn't play it much on the last tour. I hate Start Me Up just on GP,not because it's played all the time. I'd say.
Brown Sugar
Miss You
Satisfaction.

Miss You
Start Me Up
Satisfaction

Gimme Shelter isnt close to being a warhorse.

Unfortunately, because it sure as fuck SHOULD be.

The only others are Tumbling Dice, Jumpin' Jack Flash, IORR, Honky Tonk Women and Sympathy For The Devil.

They skipped it on the Bridges tour. But more importantly. It isn't neccesarily the songs they skip. I can do without the extra horns arrangement they add to so many songs. I'd love to hear more songs from just the core band. :warhorse

Miss you - perfect replacement would be Love is strong
Honky tonk women - Too much Chuck!
IORR - never ever liked the song much and live doesnt change my mind.

I'd also say "Gimme shelter" as they do it too slow and it cant match the power of 72/73.
"street fighting man" - as its kinda silly coming from a band thats raked in billions.
And please, please, for God's sake, "You got me rocking".

They opened every show with it on that tour. They omitted it on the No Security US leg though, which I assume is what you mean. They did the same with Miss You.

Worth remembering that throughout the 70s, 'Satisfaction' was performed no more than about 10 times in total.

The following three war horses need to be heard live by me as soon as possible:

1. Brown Sugar - loud guitars please.
2. Tumbling Dice - slinky and slow please.
3. Midnight Rambler - menacing and scary please.

They can retire Miss You, even though it's one of my favorites.  I prefer they retire a non-guitar driven song than something like Start Me Up.

Even though I'm on record as saying I would happily sit through a 2 hour
revolving set of SMU, Miss You and Happy Birthday to You if that is the ONLY
way to see them live again, my vote is:

Miss You
SMU
IORR

Despite being a big fan of the studio-take, Start Me Up has just been totally atrocious on recent tours: sloppy, lazy and tuneless. It’s totally uninspiring. The same goes for Honky Tonk Woman, though to a slightly lesser extent. Miss You is only good in studio-form, IMO. I have to skip it entirely on my Bridges To Babylon Tour DVD’s. It’s Only Rock n’ Roll has been mentioned on this thread, but being a sucker for Keith’s Berry-style fills, this is a keeper.

Take the cleaver to:

SMU
IORR
Miss You, and
Satisfaction

Can't bring myself to bring it down on BS.   Despite the length and the recent atrocities committed at the intro.    :stinkypost

The really sick thing is when you look around the arena or stadium when they're playing it and you see everybody else going nuts while I cringe. :nanker

OK...40 Licks Tour...Washington DC at FedEx Field...SMU starts...my friend Richard and I look at each other, thinking, let's go stretch our legs a bit...this  blond, trashy, yet  kinda cute, woman, in the row in front of us , hoots, and yells: "YEAH!! This is MY song!!"

All I could think of was that out of the entire RS catalog...SMU was "Her Song"...what an effin, stupid, ( fill in the blank).

We never came back to our seats.

Exactly. A local radio station does a daily feature called 33 1/3. They play  one song on vinyl. So the other day on Mick's birthday I sent in several requests for a Stones song. Something deep, non warhorsey. I practically begged them. So what do they play to honor Mick's birthday. Start Me Up. I wanted to throw my fucking radio against the wall.

SMU gets all the glory because its the only record that non fans who came of age in the eighties connect with besides  Miss You, In 81 when it was released it got huge play on MTV and on the radio who have since frozen in time thirty years ago and play the same tune over and over again. video killed the radio star.........

Who the fuck goes out to stretch their legs (implying you were sitting down, fer gawd's sake!) in the middle of a Stones show?  Then doesn't return to his seat (please tell me these seats weren't close to the front!) because someone made a dumb comment?  Talk about "effin stupid"!  And don't try and tell me you wouldn't have done the dumb blonde if you'd had a shot.

Hey Brainy!

"Stretch our legs"...as in go take a piss...go get another beer...( I thought everyone had a "bathroom song")...and no...we got to sit elsewhere...to get different perspectives of the show...something which I often do at any show , at any size venue...and finally, even though I wasn't married at the time, NO!  I would not have just hooked up w/ some random trashy gal at a concert...A Stones concert is to loose your fucking mind with good friends while listening to some great music by great performers...getting a piece of ass at a concert in the port-a-john is what Motley Crue shows are for.
