I was fortunate enough to have seen him perform at school a few times...it was always an inspirational show...though honestly, I didn't always know what it inspired in me.
My Brother-In-Law was totally into him, so i would go with him and he would lose his mind...he was also the only person I personally know that saw Jimi H perform...twice!!!

Noo :'( What a great artist he was. I saw him in concert for the first time last summer, it was an awesome show. I used to say "Pieces of a man" was the saddest song in the world, now it's going to be even sadder.

Gil was important in the way comedian Bill Hicks, or even Hunter Thompson, was important, and his industry decline is a lesson in the value of truth-telling and political art in the marketplace, which is, sadly, that of perishable novelties and seasonal goods. I wish that the decline in his recording career hadn't sent him into such a devastating tailspin, and that he had found other roads, "creative" or not, to follow. RIP, Gil - you were a caretaker shooed away by gatekeepers.

Saw him back in '77 when his stuff ("Johannesburg") was still getting radio play. A great talent and truth-teller. RIP Gil Scott-Heron
