TMZ is reporting that two-time WWF Champion and four-time WCW Champion Randy "Macho Man" Savage died early Friday in a car accident after losing control of his vehicle when he suffered a heart attack in Tampa, Fla. He was 58.
Savage lost control of his 2009 Jeep Wrangler, went across a concrete median and crashed head-on into a tree. His wife escaped the accident with only minor injuries. Savage, real name Randy Poffo, was one of the enduring stars of the 1980s, capturing his first world championship after winning the vacant WWF title in the WrestleMania IV tournament, beating "The Million Dollar Man" Ted DiBiase with his signature flying elbow to win the title. Savage held the title for a year before losing it to Hulk Hogan at WrestleMania V. Prior to that, Savage made waves for his Match of the Year effort against Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat at WrestleMania III, where he lost the Intercontinental Heavyweight Championship that he held for 414 days. At WrestleMania VII, Savage lost a retirement match to The Ultimate Warrior, but was reunited with his long-time valet Miss Elizabeth following the match. The two, married in real-life, went on to have a long-awaited on-screen marriage at SummerSlam 1991. He was reinstated by WWF president Jack Tunney for a feud with Jake "The Snake" Roberts and moved on to challenge Ric Flair for the WWF Championship at WrestleMania VIII. Savage won that match, and the title, but would drop the title back to Flair a few months later. Savage moved into a commentary role for the WWF but wanted to return to wrestling, signing with rival WCW. Like his first WWF Championship, Savage's first WCW Championship also was a vacated title. Savage won the 1995 World War III 60-man battle royal to claim the title and would trade the title with Flair over the next few months. Savage's third and fourth reigns would last just a combined two days. Savage departed WCW in 2000 and did not resurface until a short-lived stint in TNA in 2004. He was not seen on the wrestling circuit again, but reemerged in recent years as WWE released a DVD on his career and he has been included in WWE-related projects by Mattel and THQ. |

I enjoyed pro wrestling when I was a little kid, and the Macho Man was easily my favorite. Very sad news, indeed. I'm watching one of my favorite appearances he ever made: as Space Ghost's grandpa on an episode of Space Ghost Coast to Coast. Classic.
