Title: Mick in Australia 1988 - Never before seen pics
Post by Gazza on Apr 17th, 2011 at 5:43pm
Our good friend Rob (RSTRG) sent me these photos a few weeks ago that he took at Mick's concert at Adelaide in October 1988 (apologies, Rob, for taking so long to upload them)

After an 8-date tour of Japan in March, Mick embarked on his second tour of the year (and his last to date) with a 18-date trek around Australia followed by a show each in Indonesia and New Zealand.

Mick arrived in Sydney on 13th September, held a press conference and the band went through three days of rehearsals from the 15th September.

The tour included two club shows in Australia, the first a warm-up gig in Sydney where the band were billed as 'The Brothers of Sodom' and opened for The Johnnys. They then went on to Brisbane for some final rehearsals before the proper tour opener.

The total tour itinerary :

Sept 17 Sydney - Kardomah Cafe (warm up gig)
22-23 Brisbane - Boondal Entertainment Centre
26-27, 29, Oct 1-2 - Sydney Entertainment Centre
6-7 Melbourne - International Tennis Centre
10-11 Perth - Burswood Superdome
14-15, 18 Melbourne - International tennis Centre
19 Melbourne - Richmond Corner Hotel
21 Sydney - Entertainment Centre
23 Adelaide - Thebarton Oval

30 Jakarta - Stadion Utama Senayan
Nov 5 Auckland - Western Springs Stadium

On 29th October, Australia's Channel 9 broadcast a 90-minute concert special called "Deep Down Under" which featured highlights of the Melbourne show from 15th October as well as three songs from the club show in the same city on 19th October. The broadcast opened and closed with a pair of specially written harmonica-driven instrumental pieces - "Deep Down Under" and "Stomp", which featured 'performance' footage of Mick filmed in the Outback in mid-October.  As well as a mixture of songs from his two solo albums and a selection of Stones hits, the TV special also included a cover of Hendrix's "Foxy Lady" and "The Wild Colonial Boy", a traditional song Mick had sang in 'Ned Kelly', filmed in Australia in 1969.

Thanks again to Rob for these photos from Adelaide. Does anyone else have any memories from these shows that they'd like to share?

No wonder Keith gets pissed off.

Maybe, Micky should tour on his own!

In small, intimate clubs!

Yay!

It was a great show. It wasnt the Stones (and had Jimmy Rip as a Keith clone), but it was the closest thing we had received at that stage since 1973! Now, that is just an outrage, and a major reason why the Stones were replaced in many people's hearts.

I could have sworn on the tv broadcast (which i have taped somewhere) that it says it was filmed in Sydney, yet it was easily recognised as Rod Laver Arena (though i think it was just the tennis centre then).

Also, Mick & the band did a sneaky show at the Corner Hotel, Richmond. Sneaky enough for me to experience it. IORR (i think) was shown on the special from the Corner.

Working for the cops did have its advantages in the old days.

I saw the Adelaide show. It was the first time i'd seen any of the Stones live (apart from seeing Ron in the Faces in '74).

Adelaide was not originally on the itinerey but was added after some aggresive lobbying from a local promoter.

My basic feeling during the show, which remained with me til 95 when the Voodoo Lounge tour brought  relief of a sort, - ('tho that's ANOTHER story and all I can say is thank all the gods at once that i made it to the Enmore), was actually one of sadness. It was  an ersatz stones show especially as Mr. Jimmy Rip prowled the stage as Keith's doppleganger. As steelie suggested it was no wonder Keith was pissed off with the whole thing.

Also, it was a day time show which didn't help as it lacked the atmosphere that the night and a full on light show can add. (As the pics show there were some lights but they lacked real effect in the daylight)

The band were more than competent although I have never been a fan of Joe Satriani - too much lead guitar twiddling and sonic over kill for my taste.

They played a number of Stones songs but without Charlie's input they sounded no better or worse than a very good bar band with a world famous singer.

The feeling of dispiritedness and disapppointment came from the thought (unfounded as it happens) that this was going to be as close as I would get to seeing a Stones show. At that time I thought they were as good as finished and even if they did "get back together", which they did, history suggested that Australia would not be included in any future tour schedules (again, happliy, I was wrong about that).

The thing was, I didn't expect the show to be any more than what it was. But it was, afterall, Mick Jagger so I felt compelled by my Stones fanaticism to go even tho I expected to be (as I was) somewhat let down by the whole thing.

i saw the Sydney show, was great, well kinda great. It was Mick with a fake Keef doing his licks and moves.
A few of the crowd were yelling out 'Wheres Keef' 'Wheres Charlie'
At teh time i was working for a radio station in Canberra and organised tix and a meet n greet thanks to some close buddies woking at CBS at the time.
We got suited out in Reeboks, (Micks tour sponsor), and got to meet the king of cool.

It was backstage at the Syd Ent Cent. I remember it being full of wanky ass celebrity molls and try hards. The Sydney 'scenesters' were nobbling about. I could sense something happening, my CBS buddy gave me the nod, and in walked Mick and Jerry.
Check this.
They walk straight in, heads turned, the room quietened, Mick and Jerry walked straight up at us, said hi, got a pic, had a rave, then turned and walked out.
All these plastic people were looking at me like 'who the fark is this guy ?'
I heard Mick say ' get me the hell outta here...' to his minder.
He high tailed it.
As he was leaving, peeps avoided looking, trying not to look as it 'wasnt cool'.
I just stopped, yelled out ' Kick ass Mick !' He stopped, tuned back, looked at me and smiled.

Thanks for bringing this tour up, wasnt the Stones, but it brought back some fond memories.

I have been in radio now for over 25 years, and I remember when i used to lob up at new stations, my 'reputation' grew. I heard peeps whispering ' hes met Mick' then it became ' he's done drugs with Keef' ' the Stones call him all the time' of course i never let on.
:wtf3

thats me stunned with the Mick and the Jerry. plus 2 punters, the lameo in the hat and his girl.

here is some stuff from the gig

Thanks for posting the pics Gazza :) 1988 was a long time ago!
I didnt actually get to the concert, I had planned to go but the previous night I had got into a fight and was thrown threw a window....I was heavily intoxicated too and woke up the next morning battered and bruised..... :'(
A very good friend of mine took those pictures and gave them to me as she felt sorry for what had happened.
I was even more sorry cos I didnt get there as I was very much into Mick's solo stuff at that point and never thought I would see Mick Jagger or the Stones as a group in my life time.
I have the video taped from the telly somewhere.....thank my lucky stars Ive seen 8 shows since the Voodoo Lounge tour :)
I will  :shutthefuckup now, everyone has a hardluck story.....I never liked that Jimmy Rip geezer anyways.

Thanks once again Gazza :keithpunky

The full setlist from the Richmond Corner Hotel show (19/10/88)

                    You/Lonely At The Top/Little Red Rooster/Brown Sugar/Rip This Joint/It’s Only Rock’n Roll/Foxy Lady

The band were once again billed as The Brothers of Sodom.

Another 'new' song was played during the first half of the tour called 'What Kind of World is This?' but it was dropped by the time of the shows that were filmed for TV.

About half of the shows (that I'm aware of anyway) are in circulation. Even the Jakarta gig - although the sound quality on that one is pretty dire.

Great stories and pics guys. Thanks.

'Little Red Rooster' from the club show at the Corner Hotel, Richmond (nice of Mick to be playing in a Richmond club 25 years on, eh?)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ZaGXppQUkM

Awful haircut, but this is a blinding version.

The bodyguard with him backstage is Jim Callaghan. I think this comes from a 1995 re-broadcast, going by the brief interview with Molly Meldrum before they show the 1988 footage.

'Foxy Lady' from the arena show in Melbourne. As uploaded by Voodoo!

'The Wild Colonial Boy' from the Tennis Centre show in Melbourne, 15/10/88
