Let's say this is 1974. Mick Taylor's just left. Out of all the possible contenders and guitarists around, who would you have picked if Woody wasn't available?

I'd love to have seen what Peter Frampton (I heard he auditioned, not sure if true), Eric Clapton or Jimmy Page could've done with the Stones. I  know the latter two weren't contenders, but still.

I never heard Peter frampton was a contender, Clapton is like Rory Gallagher (who I heard was considered, but turned it down) a band by themselves & wouldn't fit in a already established band content, their lead players & wouldn't want to do all Stones songs, Ronnie was the best choice, he blends in with the look too, although at the time I thought they would pick a blond haired guitarist, Peter frampton would fit in allright, he did a whole Bowie tour & took a back seat to him.

Myth. The only guitarist who was formally offered the job was Ronnie Wood. Rory's brother has claimed that Gallagher 'turned them down', but its probably more a case of wanting to add to his legend a bit.

The only other serious contenders were Mandel and Perkins.

According to Bill, they considered asking Jimmy Page to join when Brian first started to become a problem circa 1965.

Rory has pretty much been elevated to God-like status throughout Ireland amongst music fans over 50.

Was never a big fan of his records, but he was a truly wonderful musician and an even finer human being.

Sometimes the legend overshadows the reality at times, though.

I think Ronnie was the perfect fit for numerous reasons, although Perkins and Cooder did some great work with the Stones.
