Title: Rock Star plane crash deaths
Post by Starbuck on Mar 14th, 2011 at 11:04pm
just read an article on SRV's death, lo these 21 years ago....i was at alpine valley that day and can tell you it was indeed foggy as hell. anyhoo, it got me to thinking. obviously, the buddy holly crash was the most tragic, but what was #2?

did i forget anyone that should be on this list? gazza?

You got the biggies here....

Also....

Chase--4 member of the band plus the pilot and a girlfriend
Bill Graham--concert promoter

Hard to chose between Otis and SRV....both such incredible losses. I almost have to say that music hasn't been the same since each died, so many years apart....

Sioux, I agree.  That is who it came down to for me too.

SRV and Otis...you know we missed musical brilliance with them gone.  Hard choice too.

No. Despite a few close calls, I'm still alive.  :pullanolte

I voted for Skynrd on the basis that several keys members passed away on that fateful flight. They're all tragedy's, of course.

Probably would have voted for SRV, but I thought everyone else would.

Rick Nelson.

If we were talking about automobile crsh tragedies the Eddie Cochran and Gene Vincent limousine crash, while they were on tour together in the UK.

I saw a photo of Otis being pulled out of the drink and into a rowboat.  I saw that pic exactly once, years ago, and thinking about it still makes me sad.  I read a good Otis biography, and he seemed like a truly nice man and a humanitarian.

All were tragic but my vote was for Randy Rhoads because they were playing at high risk so for me that was more tragic, they were playing with fire. BTW I was living in New York City and this was just some days before my show at the MSG, so I saw Brad Gillis instead

As musicians for me the best in that list is SRV

As mentioned by HTM Lynyrd Skynyrd was also tragic because that was the end of the band

I voted for the Rocky Mountain High man. He had a pure soul.
But as HTM said, they are all sad and tragic losses.

I worry sometimes about the Stones that they could get into a plane crash since they travel so much. Bill could of had a preminition about something going wrong and sometimes you gotta listen to that little voice inside your head saying 'dont go there'.
:boring

I've actually got a pic of Otis being pulled from the water---in a book somewhere around here. Haven't seen the pic in a long time, but yes....I'll never forget it. It's burned into my brain...:(

I remember seeing it in that book "Rock 'n' Roll Babylon". Pretty gratuitous and grotesque to put that in a publication for entertainment, if you ask me.

It's often overlooked that four of the six members of The Bar-Kays, the soul group who had  a hit with 'Soul Finger' and who were Otis' backing group on that tour were killed in the same crash. One of them survived it and another band member was on another plane as there weren't enough seats available.

That's the book, Gazza. I bought it a long time ago, but remember the picture vividly. It was just heartbreaking. :( Yes, like Skynnyrd and Chase, the Bar-Kays were nearly wiped out in the tragedy. :(

Christ. I just noticed the name of the band at the bottom of the bill that andrews27 posted from that Otis show that never took place. Eerie or what.

that's why otis's tragedy is the most tragical....he and all his band died, as opposed to three on the doomed skynyrd flight and four on SRV's chopper.

Additionally and aside from the obvious human tragedy, there's the added factor that the music world lost not only a great artist but one who was at his peak.  I think, of all the other acts who died in this manner, only Holly could be described in the same way.

I think we'll all get to play that date sooner than expected.
