I discovered Ella when I was in my early 30s. No one comes close, except Aretha. The purity of her voice is just amazing and untouchable. She also did great live stuff with Sinatra, who revered her. Ella never had the tragic back story of a Billie Holiday, but she was, as Ginda says, sublime.

Ella was simply the best. No one like her on the planet. I was brought up on her music...

Ella received her honorary degree from the music school at Harvard the same day I got my law degree, so I like to say I graduated with Ella Fitzgerald (and Stephen Hawking).
Brainy
