There are two distinct guitar parts on the Ya-Ya's rendition of Sympathy For The Devil. The first guitar solo 'proper' is by Keith, whilst the second, more complex and intricate soloing, is Mick Taylor. They both deserve the upmost kudos as both lead guitars are shimmering on this classic live recording.

Yeah it's two solos. I always loved the way Keef hands it off to Taylor with his tradmark slashing riff. It just screams "cruuunnnncchhhhhhh!", and then Taylor comes in with that beautiful vibrato. Still the single greatest live guitar solo(s) ever put on wax.

I concur completely with Riffy's analysis.

There is something especially haunting about the Altamont version of Taylor's Sympathy solo, as on the Gimme Shelter as it plays that little vibrato, the camera closes up on the girl who is crying, tears streaming silently down her face, yet her head is going with the groove of the breakdown. It's darkly tragic, almost like you're watching the death of the '60s play out on her face. It's powerful but in a sad way.

Isn't the Ya Ya's version edited (vocally, not instrumentally)? I can't remember if the sequence of the real thing is kept intact.

I does matter. To this date, no one has matched that solo. It's so good that should be illegal. |

Yes those "ah yeahs" and "get on down"s during Taylor's solo are overdubs. |

Thanks. I'll have to dig up that original to hear the differences.
