They're done. There's a report on their official website but it's not coming up for some reason. Here is a story on it, though:

That's a shame, but with White having so many other projects constantly on the go, perhaps it was inevitable.

Seeing them perform a mini-Yardbirds set with Jeff Beck at The Royal Festival Hall in 2001 (or was it 2002?) was a real joy.

Bummer. I kinda saw it coming though. And to be honest I'd rather the Stripes break up than the Raconteurs. My favorite White Stripes performances:

The White Stripes Announce Their Break-Up
Band states, 'It is for a myriad of reasons, but mostly to preserve what is beautiful and special about the band and have it stay that way'

In a surprise news posting on Jack White's Third Man Records website, The White Stripes officially announced that they have broken up. "The reason is not due to artistic differences or lack of wanting to continue," the post reads. "Nor any health issues as both Meg and Jack are feeling fine and in good health. It is for a myriad of reasons, but mostly to preserve what is beautiful and special about the band and have it stay that way."

The post continues: "Both Meg and Jack hope this decision isn't met with sorrow by their fans but that is is seen as a positive move done out of respect for the music that the band has created. It is also done with the utmost respect to those fans who've shared in those creations, with their feelings considered greatly."

The White Stripes last toured behind their 2007 disc Icky Thump, but it was cut short when drummer Meg White began suffering from acute anxiety problems. Since then the group performed "We're Going To Be Friends" on the final episode of Late Night With Conan O'Brien on February 20th, 2009. Just a few months ago White told Vanity Fair that he hoped to get back into the studio with Meg soon and "start fresh."

Since The White Stripes began their hiatus in 2008 White has kept extremely busy with his other bands The Raconteurs and The Dead Weather, as well as producing Wanda Jackson's new record. Meg White has kept a far lower profile.  In 2009 she married guitarist Jackson Smith, the son of Patti Smith and the late Fred "Sonic" Smith of the MC5.

"The White Stripes do not belong to Meg and Jack anymore," the band wrote at the end of their statement. "The White Stripes belong to you now and you can do with it whatever you want. The beauty of art and music is that it can last forever if people want it to. Thank you for sharing this experience. Your involvement will never be lost on us and we are truly grateful."

Meg might be available. But she comes across as being afraid of her own shadow sometimes. :spooky

It was the sex tape.  Meg will never appear in public again.

My favorite gig out of the past twenty years has just finally called it a day  :(

I suppose it was destined to end soon ... but still I cannot help but look at it kinda sadly. "Elephant" is my favorite album in the past twenty years, and "Get Behind Me Satan" I hold dear. Now I have no more to look forward to. I know their gig was running dry but I don't see why they couldn't have expanded with another musician or possibly even a few musicians for another couple projects. I know ... it was never intended to be that way. It was just supposed to be Jack and Meg.

Still, it is a shame. In my opinion, they sort of revived Rock ... and it was "good Rock" (raw, explosive, traditional yet at times experimental and their stuff was heart felt with the production style I loved). I thought they were great. I very rarely say that about newer acts (within the past twenty years compared to the plentiful 60's and 70's). When things were slow or lonely I could always play The new White Stripes and dig it. Now that's over...

Thank You White Stripes for the stuff you gave us. Gonna go to bed tonight slightly somber...

Ian

The best gig i ever witnessed, was in May 2003 (White Blood Cells, era) at The Shepherds Bush Empire , London.

3 relatively unknown bands were doing a promo-show for the music magazine 'Q', entitled "New To Q".
The 3 bands in question, were The Dirtbombs, The Von Bondies &
The White Stripes.

The first 2 bands were fantastic, The White Stripes took my breath away.
Their performance was incendary and still sends shivers down my spine when i think about it, 8 years on.
There aren't too many shows i get that feeling at.

Over the years i saw them at various other London venues.
Brixton Academy, Hammersmith Apollo, Ally Pally, Hyde Park and twice at The Reading Festival. (The first time, half way down the bill on the friday afternoon. The next time, Saturday night headliners.)

They were always fantastic as a live band, but after the success of 'Elephant' & particularily 'Seven Nation Army', they lost a little something, in my opinion.

Large arenas and fields never entirely suited them.
If you never saw them in a sweaty club or a theatre setting, you never REALLY witnessed the real deal.

As Noel Gallagher (the wise old sage, that he is) correctly stated at the time of their headline Glastonbury slot, during the 'Get Behind Me Satan' tour..."Jack White looks like a fat Zorro".
He looked out of shape, bloated and a parody of himself.
Sadly the same could be said of the music he was making at that time.

thanks Jack and Meg...you blew me away.
John Peel was right about you.
The memories will live forever.

Hello my dear Boomy,

I like the White Stripes, and saw them live at GWU in about 2004.
