Title: Roger Daltrey's Health Scare NSC
Post by Gimme Shelter on Jan 8th, 2011 at 4:31pm

THE WHO singer Roger Daltrey reveals he recently suffered a health scare that led to doctors in the US removing a pre‑cancerous growth from his throat.

The legendary front man says he consulted medical experts in 2009 after he began to struggle to hit the notes on stage. It was then that the growth was located on his vocal cord and subsequently removed by Massachusetts-based throat surgeon Steven Zeitels.

“My voice wasn’t performing in a normal way,” says Daltrey. “It was becoming hard work to sing. I just got lucky that somebody put me in touch with Steven Zeitels.

“He told me that he didn’t like what he saw. He took off what he could from the problem area on my vocal cord. He said it wasn’t cancer but it was a pre-cancerous growth and you have to keep an eye on it. I see him every time I finish a tour. He swears that he’ll keep me singing into my 80s. That might upset some people but it keeps me happy.”

Although he was well enough to perform with the The Who at last January’s Super Bowl just weeks after the procedure Daltrey admits he was deeply affected by his experience.

“I got depressed after surgery, during what I call the Big Silence. That’s when I realised what it would be like to not have a voice,” he says.

But he’s turned the experience into a positive, declaring his support for The Institute of Laryngology and Voice Restoration, a group started by Dr Zeitels’ patients. Daltrey, 66, explains: “It will give people who have no voice, not even a voice box, a voice again. And that will be an extraordinary achievement.”

This makes Joey scared !!!!!!

That is probably why Pete & Roger decided NOT to tour as THE WHO last year (   .. in addition to Pete's ear problems [ now cured with help from Neil Young ]  )

Yeah I do but it isnt actually a Daltrey show.

ROGER DALTREY OF THE WHO- ROCK N ROLL FANTASY CAMP
Featuring:
ROGER DALTREY (THE WHO), MARK FARNER, 3 DOORS DOWN, CLIFF WILLIAMS, PHIL RAMONE, TOMMY JAMES along with our campers and legendary Rock Counselors:

Simon Kirke (Bad Company), Kip Winger, Sandy Gennara and Leslie West(Mountain)

I think it's some kind of rock band contest and Roger is master of ceremony. Whatever it is, it should be an interesting evening and it's a club show so I'll get up close to the stage and check things out in detail, a fun night out. I'm actually looking forward to Phil Ramone, Tommy James, Leslie West and I LOVE Simon Kirke, he ROCKS!

It was scary listening to him choke his way thru his set in 2009, finally finishing the opening on the third try toward the end of the set. He should have let Simon sing all the songs.
