"Rock ’n’ Roll Hall of Famer Chuck Berry collapsed over his keyboards about an hour into his “Winter Dance” show before a standing-room only crowd Saturday night at the Congress Theater.

The 84-year-old Berry’s head lay on a keyboard, and he didn’t move for a couple of minutes before he was helped off stage by three people shortly before 10:30 p.m. He returned 20 minutes later after most of the auditorium had cleared out. He tuned up his guitar and tried to play before telling the audience he had no strength. He then did a variation of his legendary duck walk off stage. "

Instead of going to the hospital, he goes back out on stage!

Easy Chuck.

Chuck played 2 shows New Years Eve in NYC. So I guess he flew out the following day to Chicago, and it seems he overextended himself! I hope he lives.

It seems to me that Chuck is overdoing things a little. He’s clearly a fit for a gentleman of his age, but two shows in a single night is a little too much. Here’s hoping the great chap gets some much needed rest post haste.

"Chuck Berry was at his home near St. Louis and in good health Sunday after falling ill from exhaustion during a concert the previous night in Chicago, his rep said in a statement."

His touring schedule is pretty insane. I remember a couple of years ago he played a gig here in Belfast. The following night he was in Istanbul (there are no direct flights between the two cities) and the night after that it was a trip of almost the same length back in the opposite direction for a show in Paris.

Two shows in a night in New York - even if he only plays for an hour or so per gig - followed by a gig the following night in Chicago is a lot to ask of a performer even half his age.

Hope he gets back to full health very soon.

Chuck's son posted this update on his dad on IORR:
Thanks to everyone for their well wishes. My father is doing quite well now after a whirlwind 72 hours starting on Friday. Due to the lack of rest and preparation by Saturday, dad was running quite low on energy. When I found out he did the sound check at the congress the story was told. It was a simple case of too much activity packed into too little time.

Once he landed at the Lambert (the international airport in Saint Louis), he came straight home and mom said he went and slept the afternoon away. In classic form, after waking up he was fully re-energized (Amazing thing to see actually).

The family has spent the past 36 hours answering calls, replying to messages and so forth. I did get a message back to Carlitos and he passed it along to the IORR members (thanks man).

When I talked to my dad today, he was a chipper as ever. I'm sure Saturday was just the beginning of the new year, NOT the end of his performing.

Thanks again everyone.
