Ronnie Wood Wants The Rolling Stones To Play Glastonbury 2011

Rolling Stones guitarist Ronnie Wood has said he is itching for the veteran rockers to stir back into life next year and would like them to headline the 2011 Glastonbury festival.

In an interview with the Metro magazine, Wood claimed it is ‘high time’ the Stones got back into action after a break of three years since the conclusion of their massive Bigger Bang world tour.

“I’d love to do Glastonbury,” Wood remarked. “I’m always up for the festivals. As far as the Stones are concerned we haven’t had a get-together for three years but it’s high time.”

As yet, no headliners have been confirmed for next year’s Glastonbury, with Michael Eavis only commenting on a ‘US superstar’ whom is set to appear on the Pyramid Stage, sparking rumours which have mentioned the likes of Madonna, Beyonce and Prince as possible performers. In addition, British bands such as U2, Coldplay and Radiohead have all been strongly linked with next year’s Worthy Farm event.

I've read rumors that they were possibly headlining the Coachella music festival in April. Anybody know anything more?

Both of them bullshit and far too early.

Coachella has been rumoured for about the last 3 years, and a band spokesperson quickly dismissed the 2011 rumour a few weeks ago.

Glastonbury 2011 isnt going to happen (co-headline with U2 - and at the start of a tour after a five year break from performing? Not a hope in hell)

There's no Glastonbury in 2012, incidentally, so even though the Stones are likely to be touring Europe around that time, it can be ruled out as well.

It could be the Isle of Wight again, I suppose - thoughg considering this is likely to be their final tour, wouldn't that particular festival be a little too low-key for them? Reading and Leeds seem to have more of a focus on the newer indie/rock/metal acts, so that counts them out there, too. Anywhere else?

The thing with the IOW festival is that it's promoted by John Giddings - who is the Stones promoter when they tour the UK - so there may have been a bit of a loyalty issue last time.  I cant recall what they got for playing that festival, but Glastonbury dont pay HUGE amounts compared to other festivals and with IOW being a smaller festival, maybe they were able to secure a bigger fee as there was less competition financially from other name acts than there would have been had they played Glastonbury.

The only other regular festival I could see the Stones playing is Hyde Park Calling. Even a self-confessed festival hater like me thought it was a brilliantly run couple of days when I was there in 2009, and with it being in London AND considering the Stones' history with Hyde Park its an obvious choice.

On the minus side, the fact that it's in London may well actually go against it. The Stones could make far more money by playing their own stadium show and I cant imagine that they wouldnt be chomping at the bit to finally play the new Wembley Stadium, having missed out on it in 2006.

They could, I suppose, go up to Scotland and play T In The Park or maybe even hire out Knebworth again.

Fair points, Gazza. Hyde Park Calling and T In The Park sound like viable options. Wembley Stadium is what I thunk we'll get - though I personally won't be looking forward to the mamoth charge to the tube post-gig and that mad dash to catch the last train home.

The advantage of being a tourist, Alex - I'll be booking my hotel room right beside the stadium as soon as I even hear a whisper of a gig!

Stewed n Keefed stays in in a hotel too... but he only lives down the road from me!

Saw Oasis at Wembley Stadium a couple of years ago and although I got home okay, it still felt a little touch-and-go untill I was safely at London Victoria and about to board  the train back.
