Title: Favourite Xmas songs/Albums.
Post by Heart Of Stone on Dec 7th, 2010 at 12:00pm
It's that time of year, I was wondering what everyone's favorite Christmas songs by what artists or albums are liked, personally my favorite is the Time Life Christmas album, it's got well 'known Xmas songs by different artists, who more or less put a mark on certain songs, like for instance "White Xmas" by Bing Crosby, "The Christmas Song" by Nat King Cole, here's some others.
Let It Snow, Let It Snow-Dean Martin.
Little Saint Nick-Beach Boys.
Peace On Earth/Little Drummer Boy-Crosby/Bowie.
Santa Claus Is Coming To Town-Bruce Springsteen.
Run Rudolph Run-Chuck Berry/Keith.
Feliz Navidad-Jose Feliciano.
Jingle Bell Rock-Bobby Helms.
Rocking Around The Xmas Tree- Brenda Lee.
It's Beginning To Look A Lot Like Xmas-Perry Como.
Have Yourself A Merry Little Xmas-Judy Garland.
Frosty The Snowman-Gene Autry.
Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer-Gene Autry.
This is just a few, oh yes, Blue Xmas by Elvis, this is considered the top 10 Xmas albums, I don't agree with some, but here is a link.

Last year i became a big fan of Dylan's Little Drummer Boy...
A guilty pleasure is Christmas Rapping by The Waitresses
Christmas in Hollis by Run DMC was fun for the times...
and the worst is
that stupid chipmunk song where Alvin sing " A Hula-Hoop"...once that one gets
into my head, it's there until february

Everybody else can go home now! And for me, Christmas doesnt start until I hear Darlene Love's version of Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)

Springsteen's  version of 'Merry Christmas Baby' is far better than his cover of 'Santa Claus is Comin' To Town'.

Elvis' bluesy rendition of 'Merry Christmas Baby' however is one of the greatest things he ever recorded.

Springsteen's  version of 'Merry Christmas Baby' is far better than his cover of 'Santa Claus is Comin' To Town'.

"Sigh"
Again this year Gazza you have it wrong. NOTHING is beter than Santa Claus is Coming to Town. he pure unadulterated fun of the song is just awesome. Merry Christmas baby is nice as well. However the best original Chrsitmas song with the most original imaginative lyrics (unfortunately I can't find a decent youtube video of it) is this Bruce Cockburn song The Cry of a Tiny Babe:

Mary grows a child without the help of a man
Joseph get upset because he doesn't understand
Angel comes to Joseph in a powerful dream
Says "God did this and you're part of his scheme"
Joseph comes to Mary with his hat in his hand
Says "forgive me I thought you'd been with some other man"
She says "what if I had been - but I wasn't anyway and guess what
I felt the baby kick today"
Like a stone on the surface of a still river
Driving the ripples on forever
Redemption rips through the surface of time
In the cry of a tiny babe
The child is born in the fullness of time
Three wise astrologers take note of the signs
Come to pay their respects to the fragile little king
Get pretty close to wrecking everything
'Cause the governing body of the whole land
Is that of Herod, a paranoid man
Who when he hears there's a baby born King of the Jews
Sends death squads to kill all male children under two
But that same bright angel warns the parents in a dream
And they head out for the border and get away clean
Like a stone on the surface of a still river
Driving the ripples on forever
Redemption rips through the surface of time
In the cry of a tiny babe
There are others who know about this miracle birth
The humblest of people catch a glimpse of their worth
For it isn't to the palace that the Christ child comes
But to shepherds and street people, hookers and bums
And the message is clear if you've got ears to hear
That forgiveness is given for your guilt and your fear
It's a Christmas gift you don't have to buy
There's a future shining in a baby's eyes
Like a stone on the surface of a still river
Driving the ripples on forever
Redemption

Barbra Streisand had a marvelous Christmas album in the 60's. It's still in print. That takes me back as well....

Cyndi Lauper has a fun Christmas album.  And, I like the Moody Blues' December album.

I have always loved the Bing Crosby/David Bowie version of Little Drummer Boy and Peace on Earth.  I remember seeing Bing's Christmas special and was so impressed that he had Bowie on the show, considering how conservative he was.  Bowie was considered pretty outrageous for the day.  They sang beautifully together.  I was finally able to find it on a compilation Christmas album.  Still think it's one of the best I have heard.
