FAR AWAY EYES
(M. Jagger/K. Richards) I was driving home early Sunday morning through Bakersfield Listening to gospel music on the colored radio station And the preacher said, "You know you always have the Lord by your side" And I was so pleased to be informed of this that I ran Twenty red lights in his honor Thank you Jesus, thank you lord Well the preacher kept right on saying that all I had to do was send Ten dollars to the church of the sacred bleeding heart of Jesus Located somewhere in Los Angeles, California And next week they'd say my prayer on the radio And all my dreams would come true So I did, the next week, I got a prayer with a girl Well, you know what kind of eyes she got My answer is yes, you can, but organized religion's motivation seems questionable due to their determination to collect our money! Paying for prayers, for example! All churches need money, so if you are OK with giving them your money, than its ok to go! The Stones have never been anti-religous, just sarcastic at times, but I think they have Christian beliefs. JUST WANT TO SEE HIS FACE (M. Jagger/K. Richards) That's all right, that's all right, that's all right. Sometimes you feel like trouble, sometimes you feel down. Let this music relax you mind, let this music relax you mind. Stand up and be counted, can I get a witness. Sometimes you need somebody, if you have somebody to love. Sometimes you ain't got nobody and you want somebody to love. Then you don't want to walk and talk about Jesus, You just want to see his face. You don't want to walk and talk about Jesus, You just want to see his face. |

I'd say the whole proposition is crap. Of all the people that I know whom like the Stones, at least some of them, attend church regularly. To a man or woman they all find that their relationship with their church or synagogue makes them much more than they are without it. That some people can't understand this fact, or deride, these people for their faith just makes the accuser look that much smaller and less of "something". And they are too. They are the very petty intolerant pricks that they accuse others or being. Riffy |

A little boy got on the bus, sat next to a man reading a book, and noticed he had his collar on backwards.
The little boy asked why he wore his collar backwards. The man, who was a priest, said, 'I am a Father.' The little boy replied, 'My Daddy doesn't wear his collar like that.' The priest looked up from his book and answered, ''I am the Father of many.' The boy said, ''My Dad has 4 boys, 4 girls and two grandchildren and he doesn't wear his collar that way!' The priest, getting impatient, said. 'I am the Father of hundreds', and went back to reading his book. The little boy sat quietly thinking for a while, then leaned over and said, "Maybe you should wear a condom, and put your pants on backwards instead of your collar." :smilemick |

I was asking a question to the OP... Why are you responding like this to me? He clearly stated church, not mosque synagogue. There was no accusation made, by me or the OP. Are you of the belief, that the OP can't have a spiritual relationship with The Stones? Are you accusing me or him of some sort of intolenrance? Since no one has attacked any beleif, what are you basing your attack on? Who is being intloerant? No one else has passed a judgemnt on others besides you... not only did you not answer the question, he presented, you attacked without warrant on others, and quoted my question to the OP. Looks like niether Stones music or religous beliefs are working in your life... maybe it is something else that makes you so mean spirited for no reason. I find it really odd, since my question, in the context of the question asked, defends the question of going to church, by me asking, how will going to church make them less of something. Whether you like it or not, people can also have a spiritual life, without going to church, and grow and maintain a spiritual life through rock and roll... and in the context of Stones music, and Keith Richards, this is what Keith preachs in his own way, he just doesn't have any dogma. There's many perspectives, but all you adressed is anger, your own, and not the topic, of Stones music and spirituality. The OP feels they would be betraying their personal beleifs by going to church, never stating that church is wrong... one can exist without the other and both can exist together, so what's your problem? Is your respongse going to be more cursing and attacks on me and others? |

Yet, you claim that I am the one being sensitive and looking for some "ulterior motive" in your post? If you're insulted by this topic, that is your problem, seems everyone else in this thread has made some remarks and good points that are on topic, not starting fights with anyone. If you're insulted, and I'm not insulted, why are you calling me sensitive? With no due respect, since you have zero respect for me or this board, you're acting like a first rate asshole, for no reason at all. Simply, you flame and flame, love to mix politics and fight every chance you get. You're whole argument is based on "people", not anything anyone actually posted in this thread... you're directing anger inside this forum, towards some groups that aren't here... There is no group of godless liberals posting anti-religous views here... that's what you're directing this towrds, and it doesn't exists... in fact, most of the people who have called themselves liberals on this forum, and posted in this thread, claimed they go to church... that just made you wrong in the context of this thread, especially considering, no one provoked you, unless a self admitted republican, who started this thread, is who you're mad at... then you're wrong again... and me being a person who loves The stones, and has spiritual experiences as a result, and said nothing to deserve your attack... hmm... maybe you're just an angry guy looking for a fight, blaming others for the very things you are doing. |

An interesting question. Just my personal view here, regarding the christian faith only. I would think if one was an ardent believer who read their scriptures every day believing them to be the inspired word of God that it might be difficult to fit the Stones into that framework. Ask your priest, minister, or pastor their view on this.
I do believe the individual Stones are spiritual in their own way, as most artists seem to be. |

Title: Re: Can you be a Stones lover & still go to Church Post by Heart Of Stone on Nov 19th, 2010 at 1:40pm
The Stones were very influenced by black blues artists, some of whom come from gospel backgrounds, then there were some like Robert Johnson who felt the devil was on his trail, in this day & age a question would be Can you be a Marilyn Manson lover & go to church, & even M.M. is out of the scene now.

Good point. Mick brings the subject up on "Mick's Jukebox" when he talks about Pop Staples who told him that he grew up on the same plantation as Muddy Waters. One went the gospel route the other the blues.
Interesting the folklore about the "crossroads" and the devil teaching Robert how to play. Seems back then you didn't mix gospel and blues. |

Title: Re: Can you be a Stones lover & still go to Church Post by Brainbell Jangler on Nov 19th, 2010 at 5:15pm
This is an interesting question, and perhaps not as simple as it's been phrased. Writ large, it seems to ask, "Is it logically consistent or philosophically coherent to be both a serious Stones fan and a practicing Christian?'' Of course, for those for whom logical consistency and philosophical coherency are unimportant, there is obviously no problem; that viewpoint has been well represented on this thread. If the Rolling Stones are "just a group," and not a "way of life" as Oldham's Law posits, then appreciation of their work has no bearing on one's religious beliefs or practices.
If, on the other hand, one views music--particularly the sort of music the Stones produce--as something more significant than light entertainment, the question becomes more complex. As has been noted on this thread, rock'n'roll (particularly the beat) derives from West African music. Traditionally, that music was essential to the religion of that culture. The rhythms of West African drumming have a powerful psychological (the practitioners would say spiritual) effect; so-called "rhythm devils" are evoked by the practice. The direct relationship between these rhythms and sexuality is apparent. Christianity at its core teaches and practices sexual repression; this is why missionaries worked so hard to stamp out African drumming and dancing. Rock'n'roll revives that ancient tradition, which is why it was feared and suppressed in America, particularly by white Southern Christians. Its "jungle rhythms" embodied the two things racist Southern Christians hated and feared most (especially in juxtaposition): sex and black people. So, yes, you can be both a Stones fan and a Christian, on two conditions. First, you must not take your Christianity too seriously; that is, you must not make it the strict guide to your every waking move, as the most devout medieval Christian would have done. Second, you must not take your Stones too seriously; that is, you must not be consumed by the beat. The other alternative, of course, is simply to engage in the unexamined, incoherent and hypocritical existence that passes for "life" among the average sheep of this world. Those who look beneath the surface do so at their own risk. Brainy :interestingstuffronnie |

Okay, just for sake of argument, let's pretend that your not-too-well-thought-out premise were completely true. Perhaps you can tell me where the call and response songs of slaves came from? Did they, at their root, come from African beats and rhythms? Well, of course they did! Nobody is arguing that fact! That's not the point at all though. Cast your mind back to those cotton fields of yesteryear.....now what were the slaves singing about? Here's a hint some of the songs were- Amazing Grace, There's A Meeting Here To-Night, Swing Low Sweet Chariot, There Is A Balm In Gilead, and on, and on...... The one thing that every one of these songs had in common was that they were all "hymns" or "spirituals". They were called "holy roller music" by the slaves themselves! So where the hell do you think the likes of Lead Belly, Son House, Lightnin' Hopkins, and yes even Robert Johnson, got their ideas from? The blues was a direct offshoot of the music that these early artists had been familiar with for their entire lives. Same goes for early country music too! Both of these genres grew out of old "spirituals" white and "negro spirituals". In other words-CHURCH MUSIC!! FACTS, DEAL WITH THEM! Riffy |

That's quite the image there, Riffy: Happy darkies sweating in the fields, singing "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot" under the gentle eyes of the watchful whipmaster. Makes you wish you were in the land of cotton, don't it? Well, Beauregard, let me share a few more facts with you. The only reason most of those Africans toiling in Dixie were singing to the white man's god instead of Legba or some other obeah deity ("obeah": look it up; Keith describes himself as an "obeah man" in Life) is that their own faith, as you like to call it, was violently suppressed by their oppressors. The one place in the South where this prohibition on African religion, music and dancing was not imposed was French (and later Creole/Cajun) Louisiana. That exception largely explains why jazz developed in New Orleans. So, while you are correct about the origin of gospel and spirituals, it is not true that blues derives from either of those genres. Rather, they share a common source: West African music as mutated (or mutilated) by being forced into European musical forms. Blues and rock'n'roll owe less to the spirituals sung when Massa was watching than to the wild rhythms which he forbade. Some believe the most basic of these rhythms predate human language and link us to our prehuman forebearers. By that view, rock'n'roll is part of a far older, more natural "religion" than anything cooked up in the Middle East during the Bronze age. Brainy :weed :keithpunky |

BJ, I'm not going to get into some long drawn out argument on this topic with you. It's not worth it. You're going to knee jerkingly find a way to blame America, whites, religion, etc. It's what you do. I get it. You're a true believer. As sheep-like, or more so, in your own ideology as you accuse others of being.
My point stands. Slaves in the fields were, indeed, singing spirituals, and that led directly, with provable linkage, to the Blues. Likewise, Country music can be traced to old jubilee songs and hymns. The songs are all right there in the Library Of Congress. It's not too hard to Google them. Riffy |

The truth, the negro slaves sung openly, and they also kept what the could of the heritage alive and in secret, and this is not only documented through the history of black music, it is also documented as histroical fact.... you somehow are confusing influence with tradition... they weren't beaten or killed for singing christian music, but they were for try to preserve the african music... but because many were willing risk death and torture, they were able to keep it alive... and that is probably what makes simple rock music so powerful to people like me, the spiritual and emotional effect is without description. Country music came from european culture, that was also influenced by early mexican music and native american music... none of which was based on any religion, maybe some influence... but influence is a tricky word... not all influence is a compliment... and in the instance of rock n' roll... it was all about fuck music... early black rock and blues is all about getting some and not getting some... like someone else said early in this thread, they might be getting their immortal saved on sunday, but saturday night is all about ( fill in the blank). and I stand by my first post, how does being part of one thing, make you less of another? The post that was so rudely interupted by some narcisistic bullshit! and no irony is lost, the points made by Riffy in an attempt to create some connection to jesus and rock n roll, actually really shows exactly how the rebellion of rock n' roll is against the type of authoritarian rule his insists on projecting... it's fucking awesome how he makes the case for what he's against, just by his insistance that his way is correct, he is right and everyone else is a liberal prick who is intolerant.... it was only a short time ago, he was making fun of white people trying to be black, but in Riifeality, that would mean they were really the ones who the blacks had copied???? haha... thank god for brainbell...

Actually they are very similar, when reading about either The Stones account of what happened or the bible, you realize both are stories filled with inaccuracies or just very hard to believe. :aimama

Good for you Sioux, for standing up for yourself & what you believe, at least you remember the 60's, it really was a great time in the world, I'm also a fan of that & the Mick Taylor era too, I did idolize the Stones, Keith Richards in particular, when I was a teenager, but with age I outgrew that, at least I can understand why people do that. |

I would have had to fight to get my ass handed to me. all you did was make yourself look like a jerk, looking for and starting a fight, for no reason... I assume your religion is being mean to people, because that is the only principle you practice. The ass you hold is your own, by yourself... if you notice, niether me or BJ has fought, we have only discussed, you came in fighting and remain only to fight... A discussion of The Stones music and a history of rock n' roll can't happen with discussing the history of black music... Seems you are of the opinion black music emerged from southern white slave culture and it's religion. The problem isn't that people disagree with you, the only problem is, anyone who stands for something you don't agree with, is bellitled, labeled into political and social groups and viciously assaulted by your foul mouth. The history of black music, my knowledge of it, comes almost totally from being a Stones fan, and things Keith richards has talked about, and then I have gone a little deeper with the information he provided in interviews ect... I never said, anywhere, the southern churchs didn't influence the black culture, they greatly did. But at the core, they preserved many of the core elements from africa that evolved into modern day rock and roll, and even rap... it appears to me, that somehow you are threatened, because being a white southerner, I get the impression, from your hostility, that you really want to claim that your culture is what made this possible. This isn't a stretch, since you have done this before, on political rants... and you always attack people who have adifferent views, and remain mostly rational, while you keep attacking them. When The Stones first came to america, did they go to white churchs and neighborhoods? no, they weren't even welcomed there. They were subject to ridicule, police harrasment and made to feel like an enemy to that white american christian culture... but, after gaining some acceptance, they were slowly welcomed into the very exclusive black musci culture and society. I wonder why The Stones only went to those seedy Go-Go's and backwater juke joints... hmm... and you think we're just making it up... and you're "discusion" on this, is that these happened as a result of singing hymnals in the fields as slaves? The christian influence is so obvious, how did I miss it... oh, but... how does that explain how blacks went off and began their own churches, b/c they weren't welcomed in the white ones, and began their own form of music, that was also rejected by the christian culture...? In your mind it makes perfect sense, that your culture, is responsible for rock and roll... especially since it happened at a time in history when the two cultures were segragted. I bet you and the with from Maryland can have a great discussion on this, but us grown ups, we're going to have a rational, amicable discusion. |

"Stolen from Africa, brought to America?" Maybe we are greedy and conquerors. Who knows anymore. The History Books don't tell you anything. This is just one's persons opionon http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y5Nem-PNHLY |

My local library has some great books on the history of rock and roll, and covers alot of the roots from africa and the influence of american culture and how it has evolved right up to present day... I have been reading books that are fantasy novels right now, except for Keth's book, but if you really are interested, I'll recomend a few or maybe some others will... (begin sarcasm) Maybe Riffy can recomend a few, that support his view... His view is very interesting, especially his experience in jamaica not too long ago, where he saw white people, trying to be jamaican... which really means they were taking back, what the jamaicans had stolen and adopted as their own... which does make sense, since the rastafarians think they are the lost tribe of israel, and everyone knows there's no black people or dark skinned people from that part of the world... they are all white european looking, like in the pictures in the churchs...(end sarcasm) |

It's how we respond to that love that makes the difference for us all. :) I've never condonded everything that anyone has ever done---including the things I've done! We are all flawed......but I still loves me some Stones music. ;) And the young girl in me still gets excited when I see great pix of the boys! 8-) |

Ok, so I'm in church today.... ;) Sittin' in the front row of the choir, as usual. And the pastor, in the middle of the sermon, is talking about "satisfaction". ;) Uh, can you see where I'm going with this? ;) :P Yeah, he says something to the effect, "Well, I am a product of the 60's..." And I'm smilin', cuz I KNOW what's coming..."and there was a song...." Ok, here it comes. :) "I Can't Get No...." And he holds out his hand and the congregation chimes in "Satisfaction". ;D
So, yeah, in a roundabout way, the Stones were in church today..... ;) :P ;D :blankfriggingstare1 :aimama :areyoufuckingserious :smilebrian |
