Title: (NSC) My hard drive is toast! Need advice. Post by FotiniD on Oct 31st, 2010 at 2:06am
Hey boys and girls,
Keeping with the Halloween spirit, my hard disk drive decided to add to the horror and it stopped working ::) When I start the PC, I get a "Disk boot failure" message and nothing will load. BIOS won't even auto-detect the damn thing. In other words, it's pretty much gone. Now, I've got tons of files in there (about 500 GB of photos, videos and documents, and I hadn't had time to make a backup, cause the new external HDD I got also broke down :o) so I need to get them. Data recovery charges for HDDs with mechanical damages in Greece are extraordinary (about 1000 Euro) so I was wondering whether you know of any (good) data recovery companies in your country that charge less or more reasonable fees. Any help would be much appreciated :) |

I think it's pretty expensive everywhere to be honest. I recently bought a 1TB external HHD to avoid losing everything again ,but as you have lost both,I don't know what to suggest ! Bummer.
good luck with it. sc uk |

It's so expensive here too. Extract 500 GB data could be around USD800 and could take a month or so.
I've decided to buy an external HD 1TB to do my own backup on Friday, so this is my "backup weekend". This work is awful, but is cheaper, faster and you data never go out your home :) |

Kerrygold butter and Jam? :forfucksake I'll be here all week! I second the suggestion to avoid geeksquad at all cost. They don't know their ass from their elbow. That was my opinion of their service. |

The dealing I had with them was terrible. I knew what wasn't the problem and told them. They came back and told me the problem was what I told them it wasn't. :will-ya
This was in New York. I'm sure they must have qualified people in The Bay Area. Avoid the ones at Best Buy in Yonkers NY. |

I've lost 5 hdd's. You can generally get stuff back by slaving it to your current hdd. You can also get a usb ide/sata thingy off ebay real cheap that can plug into your old hdd too. Windows and your old programs are gone, but the data should be there. Just last week i pulled off heaps of songs & a stack of 2005 photos from an old hdd. I just plug the usb end in, connect to the old hdd, turn my computer off, turn it on again, and a the old drive pops up! lovely!
I'm getting an external drive this week btw. |

Thanks for the replies guys and gals.
Unforunately I can't restore to a previous date or plug it in as a slave drive, because it has some sort of hardware / mechnical failure - the damn thing won't even spin! The nasty thing is you can't be sure with external HDDs either - hardware damages can occur anyway :Youmakeagrownmancrylikejoey For once I'm happy there's no imminent tour. Got to start saving to fix the disk :whatapostronnie |
