Jon Stewart's "Rally to Restore Sanity And/Or Fear" Saturday (October 30) was a smorgasbord of the satire and send-ups of pundits, politicians and public issues Stewart's "Daily Show" has specialized in for years. However, at the end of the three-hour event at the National Mall in Washington DC, Stewart used that same incisive humor to drive home the point that Americans aren't as crazy as the media would have us believe, and that the everyday triumphs that don't make the news are truly representative of the American people.
Stewart kicked off speech by addressing the question that was likely on many attendees and viewers minds: What exactly was the point of the rally? Stewart ventured to answer the question, suggesting, "Some of you may have seen today as a clarion call for action." He also considered the possibility of wayward tourists getting caught in fray, joking, "Clearly some of you just wanted to see the Air and Space Museum and just got royally screwed." Then Stewart broke down the intentions of the rally, which he maintained was not simply about poking fun. "This was not a rally to ridicule people of faith, or people of activism, or to look down our noses at the heartland or passionate argument or to suggest that times are not difficult and that we have nothing to fear. They are and we do. But we live now in hard times, not end times," Stewart declared, to the roar of thousands of attendees swarming the site. He went on to examine the role of the press in exacerbating conflict among Americans. "The country's 24-hour, politico, pundit, perpetual, panic conflict-inator did not cause our problems. But its existence makes solving them that much harder," he said. "If we amplify everything, we hear nothing." Stewart cautioned listeners about buying into propaganda that may obscure the real issues citizens should be tackling. "Not being able to distinguish between real racists and Tea Party-ers, or real bigots and Juan Williams or Rick Sanchez, is an insult, not only to those people, but to the racists themselves who have put in the exhausting effort it takes to hate," Stewart said, referencing former CNN anchor Sanchez, who was booted from the network for his unsavory comments about Stewart and other Jewish Americans. "Just as the inability to distinguish terrorists from Muslims makes us less safe, not more." Stewart maintained he feels "strangely, calmly good" because he doesn't take media portrayals of at face value. Yet, he conceded he understands how certain representations can hinder honest, straightforward dialogue about significant issues. "The image of Americans that is reflected back to us by our political and media process is false. It is us through a funhouse mirror ... the kind where you have a giant forehead and an ass shaped like a month-old pumpkin," he said. "Why would you reach across the aisle to a pumpkin-assed, forehead eyeball monster?" Stewart said he knows that most people reach across the aisle when it matters, saying, "We work together to get things done every damn day! The only place we don't is here [points to White House] or on cable TV." "Most Americans don't live their lives solely as Democrats, Republicans, liberals or conservatives. Americans live their lives more as people that are just a little bit late for something they have to do. Often something they do not want to do. But they do it. Impossible things [are accomplished] every day that are only made possible through the little reasonable compromises we all make," he said. Referencing a screen playing footage of cars slowly inching through traffic, Stewart used the image of the highway as metaphor for how Americans make those compromises, ceding the road when necessary and recognizing that everyone is headed toward a similar goal. He also touched on the diversity of drivers on the road, noting that the cars could be steered by anyone from a mom with two kids to a "Mormon Jay-Z fan." While Stewart opened his speech outlining the messages he wanted to relay through the rally, he closed by explaining what the event meant to him. "Sanity has always been in the eye of the beholder," he said, "And to see you here today, and the kind of people that you are, has restored mine." |

I am so glad he did this, after years of getting into heated debates here, for the last year, I had decided to tone myself down and had asked others to join me... anyone who knows, knows how that worked out... a few things did happen, most of them are gone, because in the end, anger hate and vitriol go nowhere when they go up against people who try to be reasonable... and in the long run, the board lost it's political threads, which as most will agree, is a good thing. The few people who have come to post random politics filled with hate, have shown, the point that was made by the rally to restore sanity. That most of us aren't angry people who just want to yell out our point of view, and think that if we are loudest, it means we are right and the majority. Truth is, almost all of us here and good people, with different views, and we can share them and disagree and get along.... and it isn't easy for me, it has been hard, i am passionate about my views, but i am glad i am not alone in the idea that it is ok to want to be sane and reasonable and happy in this life... i thought the show was great, and i look forward to voting this week... i felt very patriotic and was moved by the rally, it was a non-ageneda based event, just a pure celebration of freedom, with some humor and zero political agenda. It showed, the common ground is big and there is room for all of us...

I'm glad he did this although I doubt it will do much good with the Tea Party and their Republican sponsors. The Republicans will do anything to get back in power, so they sold their soul to the Tea Party, but it may turn out to bad bargin in the long run. Some of these libertarian nut cases are going to get elected, but I really want to see them end social security--they are taking away grandma's money. They won;t last more than 2-years until the next election and they will be long gone.

Looked like a great, and timely, event. Many of us travelling Aussies were getting worried about you Yanks. So much vitriol and hatred. Fanned by the most part by the ridiculously biased FOX "News". Um, oh yeah, sorry for Rupert Murdoch. How were we to know?? lol - His mother is a treasure though! Much loved here in Melbourne.
Of course i am no where near right-wing (probably a total socialist by your standards) but i find politics gets in the way of beer. Some of my best friends are conservative. Sure i secretly spit in their beers when they aint looking, but politics can get in the way of beer. Which, in the case of American beer, might not be a bad thing! The good thing about America is your trashed dollar. Aussie dollar is more or less equal. Meaning el-cheapo travel! And mates, your property prices! I can buy a house in Florida on my credit card! I was thinking i just might too. IT would be cool to own a house in Melbourne, Oz and one in Melbourne, Flo. I'll be in L.A./Vegas/Hawaii in March 2011. I've asked my wife if i can go out with Charlie Sheen, but she said i cant play with him as i might be a bad influence. |

A tragedy may be ready to unfold as voting in California for Proposition 19 draws near. The tragedy, defeat of Proposition 19 legalizing marijuana as polls are predicting.
A defeat would mean the continuation of the drug war. a war fought for nearly 40 years which cannot be won. This war has cost over $1 trillion dollars, destabilized our southern neighbors especially Mexico, destabilized our own nation, made billions for organized crime, has devastated the African American community and filled our prisons with non violent criminals. Passing the measure could raise billions in taxes, taking billions of dollars directly from organized crime. Law enforcement would have more time to fight real crime, prison overcrowding alleviated, and drugs used by our youth better controlled. California's final decision could end this war. I hope California decides wisely. War is hell. -Huffpo |

Well folks, I'm back. You will recall that about two years ago I said that the only positive aspect of the Marxist fuck Barack Obummer's victory was the fact that with that victory, the destruction of the Democrat Party was inevitable. I did something that at least 52% of voters did not do. I studied who Obummer was. I studied who he decided to associate with. I studied his very real and long list of Marxists friends and associates. He was, and is, the most under qualified president that this great nation has ever been stupid enough to vote into a leadership position. He more than quadrupled the national debt in under two years, and some people (read-drones) were, and are still, too ignorant of these facts to cop to them. To try and lay even a little bit of the blame on Bush was always a con game! Bush was horrible on spending, but Obummer has blown him out of the water in this regard.
Meanwhile unemployment is in the double digits, and home foreclosures are at an all time high. He sucks. I said he would suck, and he does suck. Hope and change my ass! This clown actually called over half of the electorate "the enemy" on Univision last week. This big eared fool actually said that Republicans are going to have to sit "in the back". He was supposed to be the first "post racial" president! ROTFLMMFAO!!! He is the most divisive president in history! He's even more divisive than Nixon! Now that's saying something! I know many people that chose to vote for this ass clown two years ago. Every one these people, save one, is now regretting their horrible mistake. We need a much smaller federal government! Wealth redistribution is nothing more than legalized theft. Now he wants to reinstate the death tax and estate tax. So let me ask all of you oh-so-enlightened liberals a question. If I struggle my whole life to make a nice living, and accumulate upwards of a million dollars in assets, (by the way, this is not so hard when you account for the price of all of your assets combined) should the federal government have the right to take away a full 49% of my wealth upon my death?!?! Should my children not be able to inherit the wealth that their parents struggled to acquire? Or should the federal government decide that they know best to do with my money, and leave my kids high and dry while helping out the lazy slackers? Is that the liberal thing to do? Before answering this question you might want to take a very close look at what's happening in France, and Greece. See what socialism gets you? He sucks. I tried to tell you all how bad he sucked, and now the whole world is seeing it for themselves. Some people are still too ignorant, or bull headed, to face this cold harsh reality, but here's the deal-HE SUCKS WITH TEETH!!! Here's a Jefferson quote that liberal drones have not the brainpower to decipher. I suggest that you read it slowly and try and understand what Jefferson means. "The true theory of our Constitution is surely the wisest and best, that the States are independent as to everything within themselves, and united as to everything respecting foreign affairs. Let the General Government be reduced to foreign concerns only, and let our affairs be disentangled from those of all other nations, except as to commerce, which the merchants will manage the better, the more they are left free to manage for themselves, and our General Government may be reduced to a very simple organization, and a very inexpensive one; a few plain duties to be performed by a few servants." - Thomas Jefferson Barack Obummer does not believe in the wisdom of this American genius even a little bit. He's a Marxist, and he sucks. I can't wait untill tomorrow!!!! Bu-bye Democraps!!! I TOLD YOU SO!!!! Riffy |

Contrary to popular belief there was nothing "non political" about the rally with the Stewart and Colbert. Under the guise of this amorphous non political rally there were hundreds of signs that slammed everyone from Bush, Rush, Beck, Palin, to the classic "I masterbate to Christine O'Donnell" sign. Admittedly there were quite a few signs that were just nonsensical, and designed for nothing but a few laughs. I get it, but, and this is the big but, there were zero signs that slammed anything that might be construed as liberal. It was a crowd of people that were remarkably very white, young, and liberal. I guess they must all be racists! Turn about's fair play, right? This sign is just a small example of the non political nature of this non political rally. Pdog, there is nothing viterolic about my posts. I am certainly not insane. I am rightly pissed at the street organizer-in-chief. He's a pathetic Marxist just like I always said he was. You will recall that I said that when I was proven right that I would come back and give back a big "I told you so". I'm just keeping my word. I was right, but, more importantly, all of the drones were wrong. Just like I said they were. That that pisses people off is of zero concern to me. I have no ill will towards anyone on this board. None. I just call em as I see em. Riffy PS-The only reason that I even commented on this thread is because tmorrow Americans get their country back from the three headed liberal/socialist monster that is Obummer/Pelosi/Reid. It is going to be a liberal bloodbath. Just like I always said it would be. |

LOL! I've alienated "hundreds of Stones fans"?! Ya think that that might just be a little bit of a stretch, Pdog? I haven't posted politics for a long long time. There is only one reason for my posts today, and that is because the election is tomorrow. Oh, and I don't need anyone to tell me I am, or was, right! I know damned good and well that I am right! I've always known that. Now a very historic Democrat ass whooping is simply going to underscore that fact. As for me pissing people off? Well let's just taht I always gt as gtood as I gave. Perhaps you've forgotten how hateful JC and others always were towards me and anyone that thought like I did? Like I said before, I have no ill will towards anyone here. I'm a parent, and I am rightfully pissed that this clown and his minions have indebted my kids with trillions of unfunded liabilities that were nothing more than Marxist wealth redistribution scams that paid off his constituents like SEIU.
That you aren't pissed about this crap tells me one of two things.....either A.)-you have zero idea of just how badly Obummer has fucked you and your family (and he has in a big big way) or B.)- that you do know that he has just handed your kids (and mine) a debt that they, and their kids, will be paying for decades to come, and you have zero problem with this. His Obamacare shit alone should be enough to seal the deal for most rational people. However, liberals tend to only look at things through the prism of their own liberal ideology and never bother to actually look at the disasterous results of their very flawed ideology. Anywho! Go vote tomorrow, Pdog! Riffy |

Hey SCL! Sup tough guy? I loved the Exile release, and did comment on it several times. I listened to it non stop for at least a month after it's release! The new Ronnie disk is actually his best since Slide On This to my mind. Really think that Fancy Pants is a great tune, as are many of them are, but FP is just so Ronnie. Know what I mean? As for the Keith book. It's the best book since Stanley Booth's True Adventures as far as I'm concerned. Very funny, and shockingly personal. Keef's got a great wit, but I was surprised at how well his personality came through on the written page. Just great! What's your take on the book?
Hope all is well in your cave! Riffy |

John Boehner has taken to mentioning Johnny Cash while on the campaign trail, but someone very close to the legendary singer is unhappy with the House GOP leader's tendency to do so.
Rosanne Cash, daughter of Johnny Cash, took to Twitter to voice her displeasure: @rosannecash: John Boehner: Stop using my dad's name as a punchline, you asshat. |

I am not a "party guy" despite what some here may think. I am a registered Conservative. I am not a registered Republican. There are mny more than two parties btw. There's The Green Party, The Independant Party, The Socialist Party USA, The Communist Party USA, and on, and on, and on....
It's just that the infrastructure of the two major parties is so well entrenched and financed. My attitude is that I would rather my candidates get into the Republican Party and transform it ala Ronald Reagan. The Old Guard GOPers hated Reagan! He fundamentally transformed the party for eight years, and when he left George H W Bush completely abandoned Reagan's conservative principles, and voila the Republican Party turned into a bloated spending machine during the George W Bush era,and thy paid a horrible price for it in 2008. What the three haded monster of Obummer/Pelosi/Reid has done is staggeringly stupid! They spent more in 18 months thanBush did in eight years! Unfunded obligations that these Marxists fools have accumulated stands now at over 13 trillion dollars!!!! IN ONLY 18 MONTHS FOR FUCK"S SAKE!!! That doesn't even include the unfunded, and unsustainable costs from Medicare, Social Security, etc. Anyone that thinks there is no difference between the two parties has not been paying attention these last two years. "Meet the new boss, same as the old boss!"? Nope. Not even close. How many Rebuplicans voted for the disasterous Obamacare? None! Only Three Republicans voted yes for the idiotic Stimulus bill! Same goes for the auto bailouts and bank bailouts. All of these massive spending bills were rejected by Republicans, and compleely embraced by the Dims. Oh, there's a difference alright! A big difference, and the Dims are being taught a very hard lesson tonight for that difference, and their utter and complete idiocy! Happy Days are here again! The Obummer agenda will grind to a halt! Gridlock! Bravo! No more "fundamental transformation"! Fuck the Marxist bastard and anyone that thinks like him! Riffy |

Hmm, and you think that I have no idea what happened last night?! Pdog, the Republicans most certainly did win control of the House! But they did much more than that. Governorships, state House and Senate seats, state and municipal offices, state council seats all over the country, mayoral races, school board seats, freeholders, ombudsmen seats.......... Republicans also just won the chance to draw up redistricting maps from one side of the nation to the other. In other words, exactly what I said would happen has, indeed, happened. Whether the liberals on this board like it or not Obama has just set the Democrat Party back for decades! This is a very good thing. The real Democrats need to take back their party from these Marxist interlopers. Where are all of today's JFK's or Truman's? No, today we get socialist policies pushed by a radical left wing of the Dem Party that has all but destroyed the good name of yesterday's Democrats. Last night was the worst night for Democrats since 1948, and you can try and spin it all you want, but I called it two years ago, and I was 100% right, and I didn't even go to Harvard! Worst night for Dems in 62 years, and some people are desperately trying to spin it has something that it is not. Here's what last night made very very very clear. Americans completely reject the far left lurch of Obama/Reid/Pelosi. Will Obummer do what Clinton did, and move to the center? My guess? No. He is nowhere near as pragmatic as Clinton was. He actually believes that he is the smartest guy in any room that he's in. He's not, and he never has been. Regardless of what some elites would love to believe. He's the product of his upbringing, his radical professors at Harvard, and his Marxist associates. He's a one term Marxist chump. Just like I always said he would be. My predictions were pretty clear, and if I could access the old politcal thread in the archives I would happily cut and paste the posts where I made them.
However, just to reiterate. I said many times that the only positive aspect of Obama's 2008 victory was that he would destroy the Democrat Party because of his far left agenda. I made it very clear that he would push and un-Ameican agenda (read-Euro-socialism/Marxism), and that his party would pay the ultimate price for that idiocy. I never made any predictions concerning individual House or Senate races. But make no mistake, the Democrats have been damaged very badly (worst since the mid 1940's in fact!) and it all started with the arrogance of the three headed monster and their inability to listen to the will of the American people. "We have to pass the bill so you can see what's in it." ROTFLMMFAO!!! C-ya Nancy! So, you know, I was spot on with those predictions. Riffy |

it was a party. It was bands, and entertainers... you say it is something it wasn't, then trash it based on that... They held the rally to raise money for the national mall... and they did that while having a good time... it really pisses you off that they raised alot of money, had a good time and they performers didn't have to attack anyone or support any agenda... it must be really painful to see people do something good, and have a good time doing it... Cat Stevens, Kid Rock on stage together... I watched that video, it wasn't an inteligent ruse, in fact, they didn't sell it at all... This was a party and festival atmosphere, on halloween, and some guys with a mispelled sign are making a politcal statement by showing that the attendees were thorouglhy buzzed and having a good time... is this the reponse to the folks who attended Becks rally, and were making promoting poltical agendas, and when some were interviewed looked like they couldn't pass 7th grade social studies? This reminds me of your trip to Jamaica you bitched about... you just hate people having a good time... we get it... You're the smartest here, you can predict the future and you have guttermouth. I only have one question, what do you intend to accomplish with your posts? |

i used the quarter you sent me to play this in the juke box. ------------- Since she's been gone I want no one to talk to me. It's not the same but I'm to blame, it's plain to see. So go away, leave me alone, don't bother me. I can't believe that she would leave me on my own. It's just not right when every night I'm all alone. I've got no time for you right now, don't bother me. I know I'll never be the same if I don't get her back again. Because I know she'll always be the only girl for me. But 'till she's here please don't come near, just stay away. I'll let you know when she's come home. Until that day, Don't come around, leave me alone, don't bother me. My take on the book? Much the same as yours. Of course, I was personally gratified that the first hero in the book was a fellow criminal defense attorney, Bill Carter. I was also particularly struck, as I am sure you were, by this passage on page 493 regarding the telephone call Keith received from Hoagy Carmichael: "I had always thought Carmichael was so right-wing, I doubted whether he'd ever approve of me or me doing his song." What's your take on that comment? Brainy :smilemick |
