Title: VH1 list: Led Zep before the Stones?
Post by texile on Sep 13th, 2010 at 2:45pm
I know this isn't worth bitching about, but I am anyway. And because I can't think of any other place to bitch about something like this because no one else gives a shit, I'll do it here.
Did anyone watch the VH1 Greatest Artists of all Time?
I get most of the choices and I know its all subjective and I realize that the "voters" tend to be younger artists etc...
But Led Zep before the Stones? I say this as a Zep fan, as someone who, when I was first learning the guitar, would get the biggest thrill as I figured out Over the Hills and Far Away or Going to California...
I say this with the utmost respect to Led Zeppelin.
But before the Stones in a list of the greatest artists of all time?
I would even question their place in the top 10 before The Who.
Am I just a crazy Stones fan who exxagerates their greatness or is this a legtimate gripe.
How can you compare the deversity of the Stones and their cultural impact with that of Led Zep.
Then again, how can you place Madonna before Aretha or Elton John before Johnny Cash or Queen before the Clash in terms of historical context?
I know Madonna is an icon and I think she's great, but her impact coincided with the 80s and that whole persona thing. I just don't listen to Aretha and think, 'She's good, but Madonna is better...'

Any gripes?

I saw that. Overall I thought the list was relatively fair. I figured Zep would be before the Stones, but also thought that Van Halen would be higher than the Stones as well. I think they were higher than the Stones simply because their genius is very much in your face, while the Stones are more subtle and cared more about producing great songs instead of showing off their skills. Zeppelin also had the advantage of giving it up during their prime.

I WAS pissed off when they were only at number 60 on their list of the 100 Greatest Hard Rock Bands.

How can you say that Holden? The Stones encompassed not only blues, country, reggae, as did Zep, but R&B, funk, punk and its not just about longevity, but cultural impact. Zep was a hard rock act who happened to be versatile, but the Stones were a cultural phenomenon. I would have put the top three as Stones, Dylan and Beatles with the Beatles being number 1.
Oh well, I just noticed that Buddy Holly was'nt on the list, so it suddenly makes sense. We could all argue about these lists, but there are some truths. ELvis, Dylan etc....
And what about Journey in the top 90s?

I think it has to do with historical perspective. I always have a problem with putting groups like the Velvet Underground and Nirvana or Radiohead so high on a list like this because those bands influenced a certain genre, tapped into a particular movement. Artists like the Who, Stones, Dylan, Beatles, Aretha, Stevie, Sly, Beach Boys changed music. there is a difference.

texile, I keep my blood pressure low by not even looking at these various lists.  Has nothing to do with reality (mine at least) and serves only to upset.  Look away, dearie.  Look away.

Fuck I've been pissed off at lists since 1965 when Downtown by Petula Clark beat out Satisfaction as #1 in a stupid Toronto CHUM radio poll. Booze pills and powders and 45 years have taken some of my edge off though!

That's funny, but I love Downtown! I knew that song before I knew the Stones.

Stones and Beatles should have been 1 and 2 and I think ya'll know who gets MY vote for number 1.

I almost threw up when LZ was ahead of the Stones. Dylan or Elvis but NOT LZ.  :forfucksake

LJ.

That's my point, Elvis should have been higher the list, but below Zep? I would say that the top five made sense except for Zep.

I've got a Led Zepplin dvd- simply titled Led Zepplin DVD. Disc 2 from 72 and 73 is amazing. The sound is so much louder than other concerts I own.

What a silly idea. You can't overrate the the VU. They are as influential as anyone. Probably Radiohead and Nirvana as well.

I don't deny thier greatness or innovation, but I think most people in general can go through life without ever hearing a VU, Nirvana or Radiohead song. They influenced who listened to them. Whereas, the biggies impacted our culture.

I'll definitely agree with you about the Velvet Underground, but Radiohead? They had huge commercial success in the UK during the mid-1990's. They were indeed popular amongst the altenative crowd, but their singles sold very well and got plenty of airplay.

Ah, it's all right. Dint get worked up by any of this rubbish. Wacko Jacko is only that high up cause he's dead. And there was a releatively recent MTV show for best rock band ever which the Stones came first I with Zepplin second. The Stones, while well respected, must be one of the most underrated bands who are big stars! People analyse the Beatles and Zepplin but the Stones get overlooked. The only Stones songs you ever get on the radio are Satisfaction, Jumping Jack Flash and Start Me Up whereas you get a huge range of Beatles stuff!

The most ridiculous list I've ever seen was for top frontman in Q magazine.
3rd was Bono, ok fair enough
2nd was Freddie Mercury, yeah, that makes sense to me,
so number one must be. Surely it is? It has to be! Liam fucking Gallagher! Well....
And where was the true greatest? Oh yeah, Sir Michael Phillip Jagger languishes in 13th place behind Matt Bellamy, singer of a band who no one could name a song by, Chris Martin of Coldplay, it's hardly rock n roll and Robbie fucking Williams! Robbie Williams better than Mick? Sometimes you wonder whether they're just taking the piss for these shitty lists.

I'll give kudos to M. Jackson, he is an icon and brilliant performer/artist.
But right you are about the Stones and this fact always perplexed me. Its like people only hear Jumping Jack Flash, Honky Tonk Women etc...
As great as those songs are, the Stones are so much more than that. Its one of the all-time parodoxes of Rock and Roll: while they are mainstream popular and some would say overexposed, they remain largely underrated in terms of their artistry. It makes no sense to me. I think sometimes the image, the sex, drugs, the glitz of the old days and now the more corporate Stones personas - overshadows their art. They remain an aquired taste for more discriminating music fans. Whereas, bands like Zep are more accessable to your average rock fan.

ALPHABETICALLY LISTED:

**The top five artists of all time are listed in ALPHABETICAL ORDER. Their ranking in the top five has no bearing on their actual placement in the top five. There is no placement. There is no ranking within this subset. It is just simply ...the top five. VH1 listed these five in alphabetical order.

However 6-100 ARE ranked accordingly.

Whew ... we can all rest at ease now. I was pretty darn upset until I researched it a bit.

And I'm also a huge Michael Jackson fan but I think it's kind of disgusting that he would have been maybe in the top five if he weren't dead. Why did he have to die to get this sort of recognition??
