Look at Charlie's grip on the sticks (there must be drummer lingo for this).

When did he go from this style grip to what we see today?

It's called the Matched Grip, I've seen a few photos were he uses, The "traditional grip". He may have been using the Match grip here for out right power and sound. :areyoufuckingserious
Match grip has the drummer holding both sticks in a loose fist like grip, the Traditional grip the Right hand (is its a right handed drummer, left for left hand drummers) holds the the stick in the fist type position and the left hand, the stick is cradle in the fold between the thumb and index finger and rests on the Ring finger. Most drummer use one or the other.
There seems to be more control IMO with the Traditional grip when playing cadences and sheet music. out and out Jamming I like the Matched grip. Actually it what ever feels right for the Stick Man.

It's a tough picture for sure!!!

I just watched the Goddard film SFTD...Charlie was the best part...just kinda
hanging around and dealing the beat...
that man is way too patient at times i think...then again...he is the SPINE of the Stones!!!

I also would like to note the particular lack of Charlie (while playing) close-ups/full frames in SAL!!!
