I know he's not the first to say this but its worth repeating. I always wonder what the judges would think of Neil Young or Tom Waits or holy shit, Mick Jagger!?  I depise this show. Its not just entertainment. People get ridiculed and I just can't stand to to watch that. Nobody forces them to be on the show, but why is this entertainment to people? Is this for people who don't know anything about music? Because anybody who loves music knows that it takes more than just a decent voice and a nice package. Lok at Daughtry. The guys has a good voice but he's boring as shit. This is the dumbing and numbing down of music.

Rocker Alice Cooper has criticised talent shows and said even Bob Dylan wouldn't get past Simon Cowell.


Cooper, 62, said the rock genre doesn't get much of a look-in on talent shows such as The X Factor and American Idol, and he claims this is because they don't fit the stereotype.


Speaking on British TV show This Morning, he said: 'If Bob Dylan ever showed up on American Idol, he would never get past the first stage because he's too unique.


'That's not what [Simon Cowell and the judges] are looking for - the perfect little package. Mick Jagger would never make it. You go through all the big stars, none of them would ever make it.'

He's absolutely right! he's been there, what I don't like about Idol also is nobody pays their dues to get where they are, or any of those kind of shows, they get all this fame overnight, they never played the bars/school dances & a lot of piss holes to get where they are, instant fame! Alice Cooper knows all about that, him & the original band were the most unpopular group in the late 60's/early 70's, used to get booed when they were on stage, I know, I was there at a rock festival when people were throwing apples & oranges at them, pelting the stage, this was in '71, the event was called "Beggars Banquet" it happened in Toronto, part of the festival that day was they gave out free apples & oranges, & the audience used them to pelt the stage when Alice Cooper (group) was on.

I agree with Alice Cooper.  AI is looking for the best mediocre pop star they can find for one season.  So that when they get replaced with the new winner the next season no one will notice and the product will keep selling.

Not a fan of AI, but to summarily dismiss all contestants for not paying their dues is patently unfair.

Many of them have played the bar circuit, and some have even released records.

Cooper also commented that he would never judge a show like The X Factor as he would be "too nice", but said there should be a new one called "The XXX Factor" which could find "really good rock bands".

So he's not anti-all music talent shows. He was simply pointing out that AI and The X Factor don't favor rock acts.

But that doesn't exactly make for a lurid tabloid headline.

Shows how much I watch the show, the ones I've seen are mostly those who played at a talent show & had hardly any stage experience, but what he (Alice) said about Dylan & Neil Young is true, if they were on for the 1st time, the Judges would vote them out, they would think Neil is singing out of key, his famous remark about that is "that's my trademark"

Listen to most of the "pop" music today. I know I sound like my mother, but...it all sounds the same! They are looking for a certain "sound", even look. So, I guess, AI is fitting that bill just fine. I don't watch the show. Not in any way, shape, or form, my kind of thing.

I HAVE tried to imagine artists like Dylan, Nick Drake, Joni Mitchell, being on that show. Great artists, all. NOPE, not what they are looking for....

That's because it doesn't have enough negro soul in it.  And most of the contemporary black pop stars have too much rap/hippedy-hoppedy drum-machine modern R&B (sic) bullshit in 'em.  Where's the screamin' guitar solo, where's the great sax solo, where's the Big Mama howls or Otis Redding moans, where's the Hammond B-3?  Not there, Siouxie!

You are SO RIGHT, Wild Bill! I work in day care, with kids 8-12 years old, basically. And, of course, I hear what they listen to. Bieber, Miley Cyrus, Rhianna, Kesha or whatever....and I think of what I was listening to when I was their age. Ageless music. I can't imagine being a kid or teen today. When they are that young, they are SOOO clueless. Their only salvation, music wise, is if they have a parent or even grandparent who shares the great bands with them. But that usually doesn't happen until they are older. And some, of course, discover the music on their own.
