Title: Lady Ga-Ga !     ....from Ian
Post by Ian Billen on Jul 17th, 2010 at 11:29pm
Lady Ga-Ga's work can be described in three words: ... catchy, edgy, and artistic.

Her music caught my ear a couple of years ago and ever since I've been nothing but impressed.

Ga-Ga sounds and appears like Madonna meets Marlyn Manson. It is Pop music with a dark undertone.

Yeah it's Pop with a dance/techno theme but guess what  .... I like pop music and Ga-Ga is by far and away the best out there. Great voice. Good dancer. Nice video's and stage shows (directed by her) and most importantly really good pop music. It has a darkness in addition to it being incredibly catchy which makes her dance oriented music unique and on a different slab than the rest. She keeps busy and working as well which I appreciate from an artist that is so Pop oriented. Ga-Ga takes her image and work very seriously. I appreciate this too.

My friends don't know whether to find it kinda odd ...or to simply start making fun of me for liking her but guess what.. I could care less. Her music has different qualities than that of her peers, and her songs are ...well they're darn good is what. I really like most of them. Lady Ga-Ga is the real deal when it comes to being a pop "Diva" (as silly as that sounds...but in this case it's true). And don't be fooled... she's very versatile as an artist. Almost all other pop stars out there are merely pretenders. She's "real"  so I appreciate her that much more than the rest.

I dig it.

Opinions Anyone?

I like Lady GaGa, too. I don't own any of her albums, but have a few of her chart hits on my i-Pod: 'Poker Face', 'Paparazi', etc. Good stuff!

There's Madonna, Britney Spears, & now Lady Ga Ga, in 7 years she'll be forgotten & then another female will be taking over, probably copying Lady Ga Ga only a step further, just another pop star who will be forgotten about in 10 years.

Count ME among her fans.
Like her music, LOVE her charity work and appreciation for her fans, enjoy her outrageous looks, and most of all
SHE WRITES HER OWN MUSIC, PLAYS A KILLER PIANO AND NO LIP SYNCHING.

She's the only artist that's selling out arenas (see MSG three nights in a row); and appears to be a VERY SAVVY businesswoman.

There's alot more to Lady Gaga if you do a little research.

Yes I am a Little Monster and proud of it.

She seems to me to be just another Madonna wannabe, as many female popstars are. She takes Madges old ideas and goes a step further but it's hardly groundbreaking is it?
Plus, the hooks to all her songs are
based around gibberish!

Alice Cooper once said if you don't have the music to back up the theatrical stage presence, then it's nothing, so good music does count big time, people get drawn to these people because they cause a big media bliss, look at Justin Beaver or whatever that kid's name is, he's got one song that only goes "Baby Baby Baby Baby Baby" & that's the whole song, Frank Zappa once said you can con the public into anything that might be crap, just follow the sheep.

Lady Gaga aka Stefani Germanotti was playing piano at age 4 and wrote her first song at age 13. She attended NYU's School of the Arts and actually earned early admission. She has studied music. She writes all of her songs.

Yes she is outrageous (so were a Band called The Rolling Stones)
No her music isn't everyone's cup of tea.
To dismiss her as just another media sensation is ridiculous, imho.
As far as her staying power, who can say???

You might not like this song but she's playing AND singing live. I've seen and heard much much worse these days.

Madonna had a lot more substance from the standpoint of innovation in the shock world.  Gag-a is a wanna-be of Madonna.

How do you reconcile this with your love of the Rolling Stones who haven't been "pop" for 43 years?

What other bullshit disco music enamors you?

Amy Rigby is pop and for me is much more palatable than Stefani Germanotta.

By the way, I ain't braggin', but I used to work with Gag-a's mom, Cynthia Bissett, back in the '90s at MFS Telecommunications.   Cynthia was a sales person in NYC.

Exactly what I was trying to convey. As some may think she is not simply another pop star as Miley Cyrus. She has much writing, performing and directing talent and she knows show biz well for such a young age. She may be one of the ones that has some staying power because of this and she is quite artistically versatile contrary to what people may think.

Besides that I dig her music.

Here is a song from her upcoming studio album due out next year titled "You and I".

It is done surprisingly in style of a classic rock ballad of sorts. It's good stuff and this shows her versatility well.

It will be a sure fire hit (not that it's important). Listen/watch it and tell me she's like all the rest...

Flat out.... she's good boys and girls and the girls got talent: Fast forward to 2:30 to see her perform it.

I think she has talent, which is more than can be said of a lot of the pop singers out there. She will be around for a long time, she is this generation's Maddona. She will fade some like Madonna, but she  has talent and brains. We can expect to see and hear of her for many years.

I don't have to reconcile anything with The Rolling Stones. The Rolling Stones have nothing to do with Lady Ga-Ga or vice verca...

I just noted I dig her, and I think she's got a lot of talent. As far as Pop music goes .... OK so it is manufactured, shallow, and not to be taken too seriously. The recording of it lacks in dynamics and everything's compressed to the hilt. Yeah ... anymore Pop is even worse with 16 or 17 year old kids trying to make a statement.

But I like a lot of it and I always have. I don't take it seriously (who could) but I listen to it and enjoy it.

I like a more than a hand full of different music genre's. Country, a touch of some folk, blues, some gospel, lots of punk, hard rock, classical, even a bit of disco when the time is right or every blue moon ....and yes Pop.

My neighbor wrote a song and plays guitar on it. He is 56. He will never be a rock star. He will never be taken seriously. The song will never be a number one hit. But guess what .... it has a nice hook, a good distorted guitar sound,  and some funny yet even introspective lyrics. It is a bit catchy, and the melody is unique. I was surprised.

I listened to it. I like it. End of story... Same is true for my liking of pop music.

*Everyone always looks down or makes fun of folks who listen to current top 40 radio? Why? Nobody says you have to rank these artists in the top ten acts of all time. Nobody says you have to take it seriously. Hell, nobody says you have to buy any of it. It is simply called listening and enjoying it is all.

Maybe it is an ego thing any more, ..I don't know (not meaning in your case Wild Bill) but really ... why analyze or make fun of it if nobody's claiming today's pop, or any era's pop is the greatest stuff since Beethoven's Fifth Symphony.

Now as far as The Rolling Stones go?.... I realize this is a Rolling Stones message board and all but as I said .... what does this post , today's pop music, or Lady Ga-Ga have to do with them in any way?

Just sayin I liked her and felt she was a step above the rest out there in top 40 land is all...

Speaking of which how was Lady Ga-Ga's mom?? Nice lady? Strange? Did she ever mention her daughter?

Good lady.  Friendly, successful salesperson.   I didn't know about the daughter till she was a superstar.  But a guy I know in suburban Philly knows Cynthia much better than I do.

I like a lot of genres of music too - dozens that many casual listeners of music (like people who would not be in one of these music discussion forums) have never heard of, but I guess my main point is that as someone way into middle age, I don't have an attraction to mindless pop music anymore and I wouldn't think that other serious Rolling Stones music listeners would either.

But the human mind is capable of millions of strange feats!

I've been to the Monster Ball twice...once at Radio City Music Hall and then 10 days ago at MSG. This kid is the real deal. She has all of Madonna's stage presence and ambition, with some notable differences: she is more accomplished musically than Madonna, and she truly loves and appreciates her fans. She connects with her Little Monsters on a level that Madonna never cared to.

I once heard her say that she believes in affirmations. She used to tell herself every day, "you will have a number one record" at a time when there was little likelihood of it happening. She ended up with 5 in one year.

Well Thank you Wild Bill. The reason I gave such a long explanation of why I like pop music is because I knew many would jump all over this so I figured to get my explanation all out there right off the bat.

Anyway,
I suppose the reason I like pop music is it's fun (< as stupid as this sounds..) and it makes me feel young. I'm not one of those people who talk, dress or act younger than I am (Thankfully...hah) but I do like the way Pop makes me feel. Subconsciously it makes me feel kina young again and it does put me in a good mood and the beats, melodies, and choruses are catchy to my ears so I like it. Also I know it really doesn't mean anything. Kina like singing in the shower or something. I take 90% of today's Pop literally about as serious as that. Literally about as serious as me in the shower. I put the radio on when I clean the house or when I'm driving to work and back. And singing in the shower does make you feel alright. We've all done it at times a bit. So does Pop music to me.  It's the same effect. That pretty much sums it up.

Cheers,

Ian

I see where your coming from and you could be right. HOWEVER what separates Ga-Ga from Madonna and Brittany Spears is she is much more accomplished musically and she is quite versatile. As well she takes her work more on a serious level than Madonna and Spears did initially, early in their fame. She is more involved than even Madonna was in her early years of fame at directing her stage show and being involved with her videos and all the details of her performances and music. From the creation of her show to the conception of her albums she is all over it. Writing it, Directing etc. etc.

So I think she has some promise especially since she is now showing she can do other things and pull it off great besides just Techno like Dance tunes. That is what finally sold me 100% on her.

*As well ...she doesn't lip sync as was noted here earlier. She actually
sings and she's darn good singing while dancing to the different songs she does. She's got lots of talent I'm tellin ya.

And just plain and simply ...I think her music is a cut above the rest in today's pop market.

Lady Ga-Ga is the real thing. She does a fantastic acoustic piano version of Paparazzi that sounds like as mournful as Judy Garland. And as for reconciling liking something like this with being a Stones fan: how can a Stones fan reconcile rigid tastes? You can bet Jagger has been listening to Lady Ga Ga.

Lady Ga-Ga is the real thing. She does a fantastic acoustic piano version of Paparazzi that sounds like as mournful as Judy Garland. And as for reconciling liking something like this with being a Stones fan: how can a Stones fan reconcile rigid tastes? You can bet Jagger has been listening to Lady Ga Ga.

so she'll be guesting  on some dates on the next tour?

Why not? My point being that those who mock 'pop' acts or anything that falls out of the realm of 'authenticity', forget that the Stones have always been about popularity, as the Beatles were.
Mick and Keith have always been more attuned to whatever constitutes contemporary 'pop' at any given time. Keith maybe less so, but the Jagger, in particular, is always listening.
The Stones have never been about not being pop. , never.

Ahhhh come on. It is such an ego thing to say anything Pop is so horrid.

Everyone here raved about Lucinda Williams well ..

I do not see the big deal. Lucinda Williams writes her muic, sings and plays the guitar...

Lady Ga-Ga writes her music, sings, and plays the piano...

Besides musical styles what is the difference? It is just all in someones particular cup of tea.

NOTE:
As was already stated here ...it isn't like The Stones never did anything that didn't have certain Pop qualities or at least Pop sensability because they have. Certainly The Stones are not considered Pop music per say but they didn't  turn their nose to it at certain junctures of their career either. It was incorporated into their music too in one way or another before and ya'll still dig The Stones so really ...what's the issue?

You mean she acted like a rock star!? LW wouldn't be recognized by the media if she did something like that anyway.....she's not on the media radar.
It's funny how when a "pop" star does something crazy, she's an attention-whore, but when "rock" stars do something like that, they're rock stars......particularly male rock stars.

If you think Ga-Ga is talentless then your sadly mistaken. You may not like her but she is anything but talentless... There is plenty that Ga-Ga can do that Lucinda Williams cannot and vice versa.

Still that is an Apple to Orange comparison. As Textile said... why can't you appreciate Lucinda Williams and dig Ga-Ga as well. I do! As far as publicity whore I could care less how much attention she gets, or does not in those sort of situations. I look at her from an artistic standpoint nothing otherwise. Yes ... she is ...an "artist".

I downloaded her album just to see...

Lady Ga-Ga cannot sing.  Madonna looks like a sublime stylist and an exquisite selector of material compared to this do-nothing.  And I don't have much use for Madonna.

With all the expensive production in the world behind her, Ga-Ga can't get through a single song without a bum note, or more than one.

All this thread was meant to do was to speak of Lady Ga-Ga. Now it is more of this way blown out Pop vs. non-Pop discussion and many are acting like I am totally crazy or that they would vomit at the sound of pop or Ga-Ga.

Get over yourself. Geez... Look it's a certain kind of music by an artist. I like them both. I don't think I am too cool or too intellectual to enjoy it .. ::) . It's just light, fun music that I enjoy. I don't like all the artists. I don't like all Pop. but much of it I can enjoy...End of Story.

Can't believe all the fuss simply because a few of us happen to listen to today's Pop which is one of the many music styles that I, or some of us may enjoy.

What about Prince? Many of us on this board enjoy Prince. He can be, and is viewed as being quite Pop oriented. Many laughed when I used to say I enjoyed Prince in the real early 80's before and in a few years following Purple Rain. Now look how many dig him...

Only if you've heard next to nothing of his back catalogue. Or if you consider explorations into jazz-fusion, or gospel-tinged concept albums as 'pop'. He's probably the most musically diverse, uncategorizable artist on the planet.  He never makes two albums in a row that are remotely alike, musically.

Now?

'Purple Rain' sold about 25 million.

Some of Prince's albums in recent years have barely sold about 100,000 copies and most major labels are reluctant to touch him and vice-versa.

The notion that any artist is worthless because of some meaningless or artificial genre definition is absurd. There are only two types of music in my opinion - good and bad. However, if for some reason you' must 'categorise'  any artist into genres, then I dont think you could have made a more inappropriate choice.

Right. I know all that. What I am saying is Prince has been very very outwardly Pop on some of his albums and on some of his songs and he is quite respected from a musicians standpoint, as a song writer, and as a performer.... all the way around. As well the very album that completely launched Prince into super stardom is quite Pop/dance oriented.... being Purple Rain. I think Ga-Ga will also gain respect in time as well is what I was saying.

I know that too. Purple Rain was only second to Mike Jackson's Thriller during that era and it rivaled it. People used to dig at me for liking him because Purple Rain is very much Pop oriented (even younger kids because rock music was still very big at the time). Then over time and in the few decades that followed... he kept being productive and gaining more and more credibility with even the nay-sayers who thought he was just the next passing fad. As well, Princes most Poppy album that I heard is easily Purple Rain and it is his best seller easily so I brought it up. This is what I was saying

Yep. Musical snobbery is a load of bollocks. And there's certainly plenty of it around by 'rawk' fans.

The whole ludicrous "Stones/Rock vs Beatles/Pop" argument for starters. ("Pop" means "popular" - The Stones have sold 250 million records, so how can they not be regarded as "popular"?).

I don't 'get' Lady Ga-Ga at all, to be honest (then again, I'm only familiar with a couple of her songs and choose not to seek out the rest of her music) - and that's not really helped by the fact that it's easy to ignore the music whilst you're being swamped by the outrageous image. Plus the fact that she appears to have a penis.

Each to their own , though - if she floats your boat, more power to you.

We really need a tour!

As much as I would like to avoid this Gaga thread hitting the 500 post mark, I'm posting some pics I took at MSG. No penis in evidence.

I saw the pics below (which, if it is what the circle suggests, is just another rigged publicity stunt).

But what initially makes you say that? Is she in question about being a Tranny or man in disguise? Are their rumors? Fill me in.

Regardless of the pic below or possible rumors ... if that is what your suggesting I am quite sure from reading up on her and from watching her perform in skin tight gear she is all female.

I just listened to LGG and Sting from the Rain Forest benefit at Carnegie Hall. Doing Stand by Me. I'll admit just listening to her sing without looking at her in some outrageous costume. She sounds good and sings well. Or maybe it's just that next to Sting....anybody sounds good. :forfucksake

Interesting. Once again showing her versatility. Things like this separate her from the Katy Perry's and Kelly Clarkson's in Pop as I was saying initially.

Sure all three have great voices but only one of them can write songs, play piano, dance, direct, choreograph etc. etc. and do it all really well. Besides this her songs are a bit more cutting edge as far as Pop goes. They just sound kina "dark" in ways.

She will be around for a while.

MY youtube is fucked up - otherwise, I would be posting all kinds of shit. Can anybody track down that cover of a Neil Young song.....forget which one, but she incorporated into her own song and its beautiful.
