Whole lotta shaking coming up for Jerry Lee Lewis

Jul 14, 2010

Jerry Lee Lewis, who rocked and shocked the planet 53 years ago with Great Balls of Fire, hasn't cooled his jets. Next up: Mean Old Man, a new album due Sept. 7, three weeks shy of his 75th birthday.

The country-inspired covers collection, produced by Jim Keltner and Steve Bing, drew a who's who of admirers, including Eric Clapton, Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Merle Haggard, John Fogerty, Willie Nelson, Ringo Starr, Robbie Robertson, Kid Rock, Sheryl Crow, Solomon Burke, Tim McGraw and John Mayer. Kris Kristofferson wrote the title track, featuring Ronnie Wood.

Shingles is nothing to fool around with - especially at JLL's age.  I wish him a very speedy (and complete) recovery.

Drinking in the morning is good, as long as one doesn't have company.

Very nice contributions from the boys on 'Mean Old Man'.

Ronnie slides on the title track and Mick lends his ginuwine faux Southern drawl to a pedal steel driven 'Dead Flowers'.

The highlight for me, though, is Keith's singing and playing on a sublime 'Sweet Virginia'.

You can feel the it's-late-time-for-one-last-song-before-they-close-up-this-honky-tonk vibe...

8-)

Great album!! I love the duet of Jerry and Mick Jagger on Dead Flowers and the chorus Keith does on Sweet Virginia, Keith sounds drunker than any song on Exile
