Title: little gems in Stones songs or albums. Post by Holden on Jul 10th, 2010 at 1:35pm
What are your favorite little gems in Stones tunes or albums that took you a while to notice but now you can't get enough of? My favorite is Keith's "Yeah!" right after the last beat of Brown Sugar. I always turn my stereo up to hear that. The radio always seems to cut that out though. Also the first time I noticed "paint it black you devil" on Flashpoint I nearly shat bricks!
Another one is near the end of "casino Boogie." Something happens that just completely changes the feel of the song, and I can't for the life of me figure out what it is. It's right after 2:25ish: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GXaqbdwI3Dc It sounds like a mistake but they literally recover a split second after it happens. Your turn! :) |

Well I wouldn't call it my *absolute* favourite, that's impossible to say....but these 2 comes to mind
the piece after 2:05 in Bitch... : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TkxqIw17IC0&feature=related it's like if the guitars are keeping an eye on the other guitar; kinda wondering what they should do, since the singer has taken a break...very tense.....and at the exact note played by Richards at 2:09......that's when "his guitar" realises that he could run, and part with the rythm-duty; as the singer is facing another way. Just like a dog going for a mad run, if his owner doesn't notice that the chains are loose, and he doesn't watch the dog at that exact moment either Another one that comes to mind - Charlie's use of the drum pedal near the end of "Lies" - not often he does something like that.....at at parts of "Where The Boys Go" it's an integrated part, though Lies: here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SMMDHUhSfpc at 2:28 is the drum-pedal part |

Good thread. Gosh, there are sooooo many subtle things.
Merry Clayton popping the mic in "Gimme Shelter" & Jagger going "whoa!" The more or less total stoppage in "Stray Cat blues", only to have the band come back in 1 by 1, led by Charlie's brilliantly strategised drumming. The subtle strings (too subtle???) on "Sway". How the sound of the passing car in "Country Honk" passes from the right - left channel. The hand drum on "Shattered". The background yelling on "Angie". Taylors slide guitar creeping up to totally engulf "Soul Survivor". Tympani on "Undercover of the night". Jagger - audience call & response after YCAGWYW on "Love you Live" - also, same album, the rather crude and unsubtle mixing of piano merging into raucous guitar on IORR But what about things we WANT to hear? Uncut Sympathy & Rambler from Ya ya's. Brian percussion on Let it Bleeds Rambler. Another 20-30 seconds of Sway More of that outro solo from 'Rocks off" More of Charlies bass drum on GHS |

That little part in Emotional Rescue where it sounds as if Mick is taking a big toke off of a fat joint.

the groove on Carol from Ya Ya's bout half way through.......the chugging grinding sound of the band as tight as they have ever been. Maybe rock's finest moment.

"Got Live If You Want It".....23 song version
When they go from Mona to the HOTTEST version of Everybody Needs Somebody To Love. Absolutely electrifying! Makes me grin and laugh and jump up and....jump around. ;D |

The bit right at the end of the bridge of "Rocks Off" where you can hear Keith say "oh baby!" in the background, right before "The sunshine bores the daylights out of me". Fucking love it.

Monkey Man at four flicks when Mick screams "BUT WE LOVE TO PLAY THE BLUES!"
Chills down the spine but, there are so many. This is just the first that came to my mind. :paristhong |

Man, there are so many and corgi mentioned some of mine. I was just thinking about this the other day listening to PMS, in the great songs, there's always that moment of true grace.
*n PMS, when Mick sings, 'I heard some gossip...' and Nicky's piano does some kind of thing - like a cascade down to the root chord - I can't describe....and he does it again on the next line of that verse. And the way Charlie crashes on Keith's minor 7 chord, accenting it....soulful! *n 'Winter', when MT's solo comes in, that whole section of the song becomes something else with the strings and Nicky's piano, again, doing something so beautiful I can't descibe it. *Then there's the way Bill's bass line shifts in 'Beast of Burden', after the first verse, that just changes the entire mood of the song, it makes it one of those pretty, minor 7 grooves that makes the song more heartbroken. And when Mick sings 'in love enough...' - that way CHarlie's drums crash the cymbals before they go back into the main groove. Keith's guitar on this song is genious, one of my favorites: he doesn't play any "solos" - he just throws those beautiful licks in there and they seem so seamless. MT's slide in 'Soul Survivor' - just the way corgi described it, "creeping up to totally engulf the song"... *Toward the end of 'Let it Loose' where - again - Nicky's piano does some kind of gospel thing I can't describe. I love Bill's bass all the way through "Emotional Rescue" (it is Bill right?) and when Mick's voice drops from the falsetto to the that sexy, sleepy 'I was dreaming last night...' Mick at his unforced sexiest. I love the way, In "Loving Cup", when on the second 'What a beautiful buzz' - ne begins the second one by going oooohhh....but he doesn't quite hit the right note at first, but lifts his voice to hit the note.....beautiful. This list could be endless.... |

Mick's count down intro to "Sway", another one you need to crank up. One, two, three, four

Oh yes that's a good one - together with his "oh yeah" in the beginning of Rocks Off, it's among the coolest seconds on any RS album |

There's so many looking back, earliest was the fuzz tone on "Satisfaction" in '65 never heard anything like that, the way Mick sings like begging then threatning the words, Last Time when everything stops except the drums then the lick comes in loud, 19th N.B. when Charlie hits that cymbal loud, & his drumming in general & the words Here It Comes, here it comes, there's all kinds of gems like this, it's the dynamics in sound that stand out too.

I got some more. I love Bill's Bass licks at the end of 19th Nervous Breakdown. The way it rolls down so fast and smooth. Also the instrumental break in Monkey Man is just hypnotizing; everything is in perfect harmony. Everything fits together and the piano is just weaving through it like an eagle.

Iīve heard many great versions of Gimme Shelter live, wich will always be my favourite song. But you just have to listen to this version and just focus yourself on the guitar parts from Keith. Itīs amazing the way how he switches from rythm to lead guitar, itīs something Iīve never heard anyone done before, not even Keith himself . As much as I love the Eric Claptonīs, Dave Gilmourīs and even Mick Taylorīs, none of them stand in Keithīs shadow on this performance! Just check it out on here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9SiJNVxj9iw
As a whole band perfomance their might been better ones, like the version of paradiso Amsterdam: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W76KuFAhMfc In the Amsterdam version you actually hear the ancient art of weaving between Ronnie and Keith wich is great, but in the Bremen version you just hear Keith taking the whole song on itīs own itīs mind just mind blowing! Enjoy!! |

Another is on "Waiting on a friend", near the end, when the sax does a little solo. Man, i cry when i hear that! And i totally have translated it. It's a bit mournful (just hanging around...waiting, waiting), then it bounces around (joy!! There is the person i'm waiting for). It's one of the most powerful examples of music being put into a thought/feeling for me that i have experienced.
And though i am not a big fan, "Like a rolling stone" from St Louis 97 dvd always brings a lump to my throat. Just to see them on that little stage in the middle of the stadium with people going nuts really fires me up. And a little bit of video image that i dig, is during the version of "Satisfaction" in "Gimme Shelter", where Mick is the main shot, but in the back ground Keith (in a red spangly jacket) leans back and rocks his head back and forth. "Wild horses" - the 2nd time Charlie comes back in, with a little "skuffle" of the snare, and Taylor does that 1st moaning, mournful note. Fuck!!!! The fade out of "Salt of the Earth". Oh and who can forget Jagger's little goodbye to the young fans on "something happened to me yesterday" - pure hilarious genius. "And dont forget, if you're riding a bike, wear white". lol I tell ya, to quote Woody Harrelson from "zombieland" - " ya gott enjoy the little things" Nothing or no one inspires me as much as this bloody group. There worst is other people's best. Their best...is the best! |

Another one is Keith's guitar in "hipshake." He plays along so lazily the whole song but then around the two minute mark it's like he wakes up at just starts playing with such intensity: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e68ukX1vlCU
