It's weird.  According to the Spanish language television, he was 14 years old and had just graduated from junior high school.  According to the English language television, he was 15 and a juvenile delinquent.

Obama Orders Dance Classes, Movie Nights, and Bingo for Illegal Detainees

The Houston Chronicle reports that the Obama administration has ordered the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) department to implement multiple modifications to their facilities to make life easier, more comfortable, and pleasant for the hundreds of thousands of illegal immigrants (approximately 400,000) it detains annually.  An internal ICE email highlights 28 different changes the organization will have to make to soften the look of its facilities, present a friendlier environment, offer better entertainment, organize fun activities, and provide illegal immigrant detainees with free access to email and phone services, as well as better dining and training classes.

According to ICE officials all of these changes are part of broader efforts supported by Obama "to make the immigration detention system less penal and more humane."  In reality, these changes are akin to "creating an all-inclusive resort for immigration detainees."

Some of the changes the White House is ordering include:

   * § dance classes
   * § movie nights
   * § art classes
   * § cooking classes
   * § tutoring and computer training
   * § free and unmonitored phone service
   * § free email access
   * § bingo
   * § arts and crafts
   * § more variety in dining options
   * § self-serve beverage stations
   * § fresh vegetable bars
   * § fresh carrot sticks
   * § hanging plants
   * § recreation in natural setting
   * § robust aerobic exercise


Also, ICE is expected to eliminate pat-down searches, lockdowns, and light-out for low-risk detainees, as well as provide vastly expanded visitation rights (up to 12 hours per visit) in its facilities.

The changes listed in the ICE e-mail are planned for nine different detention centers owned and operated by Corrections Corporation of America (CCA) across the country.  According to the Chronicle, some of the changes "will be implemented within 30 days; others may take up to six months"

Illegal immigrant advocates are thrilled at the required changes.  They have been advocating these transformations for years.  Lory Rosenberg, policy and advocacy director for Refugee and Migrants' Rights for Amnesty International was delighted with the promised improvements: "Many of these points are very important to changing the system from a penal system, which is inappropriate in an immigration context, to a civil detention system."

However, ICE union leaders are appalled at the cavalier attitude towards the illegal immigrants they oversee and warn of the inherent dangers of such misguided policies.  The officials are concerned the mandates will jeopardize the safety of their guards and agents, increase the potential for harm to other detainees, and cost the taxpayers more money in order to transform detention centers into an "all-inclusive resort" for immigration detainees.

   "Our biggest concern is that someone is going to get hurt," he said, taking particular issue with plans to relax restrictions on the movement of low-risk detainees and efforts to reduce and eliminate pat-down searches.


ICE leadership also expressed concerns about safety issues inherent in lowering security standards for almost half million detainees, many of which are violent and have gang affiliations.  Tre Rebstock, president for Local 3332, the ICE union in Houston explains:

   some detainees may be classified as low-risk because they have no serious criminal history but still may be gang members that "haven't been caught doing anything wrong yet."


   He also said eliminating lockdowns will make it more difficult to protect detainees from one another.

   He said reducing or eliminating pat-down searches could allow contraband into the facilities, including weapons.


These concerns are justified.  According to ICE's own report, as of September 9, 2009, 51% of the detained aliens were felons and 11% of the illegals had committed violent crimes.  The report confirms that most common crimes committed by criminal aliens are those involving dangerous drugs, traffic offenses, simple assault, and larceny.

None of this matters to the ivory-tower elitist Obama.  He condemned the people of Arizona for passing the SB1070 law that mirrors the US federal law on immigration calling it "misguided" and "irresponsible."  He has refused to listen to the American people, 73% of whom agree with Arizona and its stance on illegal immigration.  He stood beside Mexican president Felipe Calderon as he bashed Arizona and its people.  He then applauded Calderon's defamation of America, while Democrats in Congress cheered and shouted their approval.  He has refused to enforce our immigration laws and secure our borders.  He has continued to push for amnesty while a vast majority of the American people are against it.

President Obama wants millions more voters who support his radical leftist ideals.  Pandering to illegal immigrants, blaming America, and continually playing the racist card is how he can get there.  This is the Democrat's best chance to overwhelm the American electorate and they're going for it.  Damn the American people, full amnesty ahead!

I didn't always agree with former President Bush, but one thing that he did that I am grateful for was that he required EVERYONE to show proof of citizenship when entering the United States.

So, why don't the people in Arizona rewrite the law and make it fairer for EVERYONE.

I have to show my Ga State issued license every time I get stopped by the cops. I'm blonde hair, green eyes though.

I don't think the kid deserved to die, but he is a victim of a much larger problem, and just a sad reminder of how fucked up the situation is on both sides... On the mexican side, he was most likely involved with a group that smuggled people across for money, and they were attacking and taunting the border agents... on the american side, they have alot of trigger happy scared agents trying to do an impossible job... i'm not really shocked this happened, i can't beleive it doesn't happen more often... look at what happened in mexico today a govt. convoy was ambushed and 10 officers were killed... with all the drug cartel mudering going on... shit... you don't think US agents and citizens are a on edge... if i was near the border, i'd be scared shitless and shooting people too... sounds like a kid who got mixed up with the wrong people... he wasn't just innocently taking a walk just a few yards from the border, let's be honest... why was he there to begin with? Illegal immigration is a huge problem in my state (WA) as well.  Although people are afraid to say it openly for fear of being labeled a racist,  everyone I've talked with is in favor of the AZ law.  When I went to Mexico I had to show proper identification and had no problem with it.  As someone pointed out earlier in this thread when any citizen is stopped by a cop they are required to show identification.

The conditions that lead people to risk their lives to cross our border are heartbreaking, but it has to be stopped.  I know of one family in particular.   The husband is an illegal and the wife is a citizen.  I would hate to see him deported because he is a good, hard working young man, yet he is here illegally and has fathered 2 children in a short period of time.  I expect more children will follow.  He works 6 1/2 days per week at a pallet building plant to support them.  He is but one of thousands in my county and there will be more coming as AZ frightens people into other states.

The old song of illegals doing work "whites" won't do is b.s.  I put myself part way through college working at a vegetable canning plant.  That was dirty, back breaking work but I was glad to get it because (at that time) I was paid a good wage.  The plant still exists but the wage does not and I would bet that 3/4 of the work force is here illegally and are happy to work for less.  The corporation that owns the plant should be hit with a fine large enough to get and hold their attention.

Something needed to be done long ago - maybe AZ's bold step will cause a better solution to present itself.  I hope so.

some aspects are so complex and others so simple... wages and taxes being one thing that needs to be addressed... and employers need to be held accountable... I agree with Ginda 100%, all the people  I have met, working here illegally are great kind people, but they are still working and living here illegally, not paying taxes but enjoying many of the things those taxes pay for...
like I said before, this kid is just a victim of what really is a very large issue...

People are touchy about immigration. I live in Texas and am of Mexican-Amercan descent, so its complicated. Yes, it is a problem, but those who cross the border....
I'm not condoning illegal immigration, but its the savvy ones who do it.
I do have a problem with a kid getting shot because he's crossing the border. That's inexcusable. BTW, in Texas , there are groups who wear their racism on their sleeve with no shame....and its hard to separate the economic issue, which is a very real argument, to those who just don't like Mexicans, because they do exist and are very vocal.

The truth is that it is less about "illegal immigration" and more about racism and discrimination.  

Furthermore, there are many people in prominent positions who do not want the illegals to go away.  

Starting with the billion dollar ag business.  Would you be willing to pick strawberries for 90 cents a basket?  Of course, not.  Go visit a strawberry field sometime.  Or an apple orchard!  Or a vineyard! There are no white people or black people.  It's all Mexicans!

Then, another billion dollar business, the hotel and restaurant business.  Who cleans the rooms in all the hotels?  It's Latin women!  I've never seen a white woman or a black woman doing this job.  (Except for when I went to England, I did see some black maids and a white maid!  Which completely shocked me!)  

Then, the restaurants, the "head chef" and waitresses may all be white, but the ones doing all the actual cooking are Mexican men!  (Ask Anthony Bourdain, reknown celebrity chef!)

Another, the billion dollar construction business.  The architects and contracters are all legal and licensed, but the ones doing the actually building are all predominately Mexican!

Finally, the billion dollar, fashion industry.  The focus is always on the designers and the models, but no one ever thinks of those Latin women and men who actually make the clothes!

So, you see, a lot of important people don't want to see the illegals leave.

You don't have to list the menial work, in NYC, most of the finest restaurants you go to, all ethnic levels, the Mexicans run the entire kitchen. From Head Chef, sous chef, line workers, prep and dishwashers.

I find it funny that this country is trying to keep out the most dedicated and hardest workers out there, not to mention the close strong family unit.

Besides, we're all illegal immigrants in this country. Hate, lies and deception in Washington DC concern me a helleva lot more then people looking for a better future for themselves and their family!

you hit the nail on the head with the Xenophobia, as a whole I'm pissed, but when it comes to individuals in my daily life, no I have no ill feelings... like I said before, bottom line is money. Untaxed and then a great deal is sent back to Mexico, but services in the USA are consumed and used for free... that is what I am mad about. A big problem in USA is people just think they are entitled. I'm not talking just entitlement govt. programs.. I'm talking on all levels and people of all economic classes... a big part of the problem is people expecting this cheap labor, and then you have the people coming over to do the work. Both parties feel entitled to what they can take from the system... do the poor workers get fucked? Hell yes, always the case histrorically... the solution has nothing to do with the problem, and as long as we try to spend money keeping out people, we will be wasting the money and creating a criminal industry. The solution is based in employers and consumers and the ability to collect fair taxes and impose fees to be allowed to here while working. And the gripe that it will cost more is bullshit... just like we have cheap gas, and now have a huge bill to pay to clean it up, or with drugs the immense cost of the problems dealing with drime, there is a huge price being paid for what we think is cheap fruit... hopefully people see my position isn't one against human rights, in fact, my position is one that i feel will give people some rights and some not fuck over anyone else in the process...

Mexico is a mess with the drug cartels running things. I'd flee too. A quicker less costly form of immigration would actually help the US economy and get more people on the tax rolls. Many work much harder at menial jobs than long term residents who have worked their way down to those jobs. The truth is that it is less about "illegal immigration" and more about racism and discrimination.   Furthermore, there are many people in prominent positions who do not want the illegals to go away.   Starting with the billion dollar ag business.  Would you be willing to pick strawberries for 90 cents a basket?  Of course, not.  Go visit a strawberry field sometime.  Or an apple orchard!  Or a vineyard! There are no white people or black people.  It's all Mexicans! Then, another billion dollar business, the hotel and restaurant business.  Who cleans the rooms in all the hotels?  It's Latin women!  I've never seen a white woman or a black woman doing this job.  (Except for when I went to England, I did see some black maids and a white maid!  Which completely shocked me!)   Then, the restaurants, the "head chef" and waitresses may all be white, but the ones doing all the actual cooking are Mexican men!  (Ask Anthony Bourdain, reknown celebrity chef!) Another, the billion dollar construction business.  The architects and contracters are all legal and licensed, but the ones doing the actually building are all predominately Mexican! Finally, the billion dollar, fashion industry.  The focus is always on the designers and the models, but no one ever thinks of those Latin women and men who actually make the clothes! So, you see, a lot of important people don't want to see the illegals leave.

Yep, 10-20K daily is what I've heard and seen, some up to 50K. Thus the term invasion I used earlier. It's fucked and I have no solution.

I once read an article, (Unfortunately, I don't remember the name of the author or the title.) but in this article, the author stated that referring to a country as "developing" or "Third-World" was very rude and disrespectful.

Furthermore, he went on to ponder the question: Is "under-development" a stage towards "development" or the result of the "neo-colonialized" relationship that so-called Third World nations have with industrialized nations?

He went on to explain how people in countries like the United States, Germany and Japan use up 75% of the world's natural resources. While people living in these so-called "Third World nations" don't utilize not even a fraction of that.

The people of Africa and Latin America never begged for food until the "discovery" of gold, silver, diamonds, fruits and vegetables, petroleum, natrual gas, minerals, and timber. How is it that they are so rich in natural resources, yet still they are hungry?

Why is it that the world's richest man in the world lives in Mexico? The 4th and 5th richest men live in India? The 8th richest man lives in Brazil? How can that be?

Illegal aliens do not qualify for government programs.  Just because they were speaking Spanish, does not mean they were illegal aliens.  Puerto Ricans speak Spanish and they are American citizens.

The border problem has had a devastaing affect on our public schools, health care, penal system, and social services. That Americans are pissed about it does not equate to racism at all. The fact that the border is being left wide open for purely political reasons only fans the flames of anger. no shit... let's be clear, if you lok at simple numbers... Americans are murdered, robbed in mexico at a far greater percentage than any mexicans coming in the USA, both illegally and legally... The Mexican police are notorious for bribery and extortion of americans. I had a customs officer in Mexico steal my Stones Zippo lighter... in my face, went into my luggage, took it out. You equate america with white, well I do see why... I'm also Irish and German/Jew.. .so don't whine to me about racism and persecuation... That border patrol agent that supposedly got shot in the Arizona desert?  It turns out that it was all a hoax!  After a thorough investigation, experts have conclude that the wound was more than likely self-inflicted.

This really messes things up for all the honest, hard-working peace officers who risk their lives daily, so that we can be safe.  Underpaid and overworked, you never read about these heroes.  It's sad!

Reporting from Guatemala City, Danilo Valladares of the Inter-Press Service (IPS) notes that there will be one more barrier for Guatemalan immigrants in their trek to the United States. In addition to dodging dangerous drug traffickers and immigration officials, the latest obstacle is emerging: a wall between Guatemala and Mexico.

According to the head of customs for Mexico’s tax administration, Raul Diaz, the Mexican border state of Chiapas is constructing a wall along the country’s southern border with Guatemala, along the river Suchiate which divides the countries. Diaz says the purpose of the wall is to prevent the passage of contraband, but admits, “It could also prevent the free passage of illegal immigrants.”

According to Mexico’s National Commission on Human Rights (CNDH), 500,000 people from Central America cross into Mexico illegally every year — the vast majority of them attempting to reach the United States. In addition, smugglers reportedly use the Suchiate River to move goods across the international border without paying duty taxes.

Just as Mexican authorities have opposed more strict border enforcement and the construction of a border fence along the U.S. border with their country, Mexico is now receiving a great deal of criticism from Guatemalan officials.

You can almost smell the hypocrisy, can’t you?

I am all for building a fence along the U.S./Mexican border.

What I am against is discrimination against AMERICANS of Latin descent!
