Title: Re: Is David Bowie Retiring From The Road? Post by left shoe shuffle on Jun 8th, 2010 at 1:46pm Bowie doesn't come flat out and say it - the RS headline is a question - but he does say "I'm not thinking of touring". He's kept a low profile for quite a while. Maybe recording some new material will change his mind. Or maybe not... |

Yeah, You're right about that, about it being a question, I saw him twice in the 70's, I heard his Reality tour was excellent, I've got to get the DVD of that yet, I think it's from his show in Dublin, but let's face it, he's got all kinds of money, his wife is making all kinds of money, & he's there to bring up his daughter, I hope he does another album & doesn't stop recording, again, it's a question of if he stops touring or not. |

Triple bastardo GS. Damn I know the show I saw at BCT was one I still remember still as one of my top 5 all time. But I honestly forgot that he played in San Jose and did 2 shows in Berkeley. I do remember that they didn't serve alcohol at the BCT. Which is probably why I remember that show so well. When he did Heroes. Literally put a chill up the old backbone. ......Yeah I hope DB does somehow make it back on the road. I love all different era's of his career. Diamond Dogs is still my fave. I only got to see him twice - the Serious Moonlight tour in Milton Keynes in '83 and at Slane Castle on the Glass Spider tour in July '87. Both pretty good although seeing him in the 70s (especially on the Station to Station tour) would have been something else. Bowie's final great album was 'Scary Monsters' (also his best one IMO)
Had a ticket to see him in '95 on his only visit to Belfast but got 'flu and couldnt go. Wasn't that keen on the stuff he was doing then anyway (this was the 'Outside' tour, so I wasnt that crushed). Didnt imagine then it would have been the last time, though! As lefty says, it doesn't actually say he's retired from touring, but as he's been pretty much inactive now for 6 years since his heart surgery, I've long given up on the prospect of seeing him tour again. Hopefully the much-delayed 'Station to Station' reissue will see the light of day soon (scheduled to include a 5.1 remix and an official release for the legendary Nassau Coliseum show from March '76 previously bootlegged as 'The Thin White Duke'). With the Exile reissue and the upcoming Springsteen 'Darkness on the edge of town' box set, its shaping up to be a vintage year for deluxe reissues of classic albums. |

saw him Adelaide late 78 early 79 - pretty much the show as documented on Stage
I was a little disappointed as his music had taken on the more austere euro tones of Low and Heroes while I was hoping for the hotter and and funkier feel of Station to Station and for sure the sound didn't do the old ziggy material justice at all - however, i would certainly appreciate it more if I saw that show again now |

It's a shame, I was hoping after totally cleaning up with another mainstream tour he would veer off into left field again. (I preferred to the Outside & Earthling tours to the Heathen/Reality ones)

Saw him in 04. I was amazed at how great and powerful his voice was live....
Bowie has always seemed like a class act to me and a true artist. But he's also got a life, married to a beautiful, intelligent Iman who does good things in the world etc... I'd retire too. |

His lungs are in terrible shape. He could not handle singing for a whole concert any longer. He's on steroids as the picture clearly indicated. He needs them.

No Stones showed up evidently. But here is the review of the show: Jeff Beck honored his late friend and mentor, Les Paul, with an intimate performance Wednesday night at his favorite haunt, the Iridium Jazz Club. The legendary Paul played there every Monday night until his death last August, so it was an appropriate place for a celebration on the night he would have turned 95. The small basement club was packed with an invitation-only crowd that included a who’s who of rock music. Meat Loaf, Little Steven Van Zandt, Zakk Wylde, Metallica’s Kirk Hammett and many others visibly enjoyed the nearly two-hour set. The Imelda May Band, a rockabilly quartet from Dublin, backed Beck onstage. May, and her guitarist husband, Darrel Higham, shared most of the night’s vocal duties. She periodically left the stage, especially during the many instrumental numbers. Brian Setzer also came out to sing during two songs, including the finale. Midway through the show, May and Beck covered a block of songs made famous by Paul and Mary Ford, including “How High the Moon,” ‘‘Vaya con Dios” and “The World Is Waiting for the Sunrise.” Before embarking on the homage, May explained that she prerecorded her voice for backing vocals, just as Ford did when she recorded them many years ago. Outside of the tribute, Beck covered scorching versions of “Walking in the Sand,” ‘‘Sleepwalk” and “The Peter Gunn Theme.” The last featured 24-year-old New Orleans phenom Trombone Shorty in the horn section. Beck also played the Yardbirds classic, “Train Kept A-Rollin,” a song he covered in the 1960s. The set ended with Bill Haley’s “Rock Around the Clock” and “Shake, Rattle, and Roll.” After the show, Meat Loaf said he was blown away by Beck’s guitar playing. “How does he do it,” he pondered. “His playing comes from a place in the heart that exists in so few people. It’s like the performance by that guy in the Godfather II (John Cazale) and how he overshadowed Al Pacino.” Van Zandt, the E Street Band guitarist, was equally enthralled. “The best show I ever seen in my life. I’m not kidding. Absolutely phenomenal,” he said. Metallica’s Hammett, who considers Beck one of his idols, said: “He does everything with a smile while you’re asking yourself, ‘How the hell does he do that?” Former Kiss guitarist Ace Frehley and Black Label Society’s Wylde both summed the show up as “awesome.” The performance was filmed for PBS special later this year as well as a DVD |

I saw Bowie only once, back in 1976, April 15th. at Frankfurt Festhalle.
the black & white setting of the stage was quite remarkable but otherwise memory faded fast, as the Stones played the same place on the 28th of April. |

it's great to see the bootleg of the show finally released (Nassau Coliseum Uniondale N.Y.) & especially the extra songs that were not there before (life on mars/Queen Bitch/Waiting For The Man) on the bootleg.
One of my favorite Bowie periods was that STS/White Light White heat tour as it was called, that was totally original for Rock, the look (Frank Sinatra type- fedora hats/Black dress pants, white shirt, black leather vest) & the stage lighting (pre-Nazi Cabaret) that was more theatrical then anything. |
