Title: 1964 Stones Show On BBC Radio Wednesday
Post by left shoe shuffle on May 31st, 2010 at 2:56pm

Wednesday, 04:00 on BBC 6 Music

The Live Music Hour

We've an amazing, and rarely heard, Rhythm and Blues special for you this morning.

We'd go so far to say that this recording for the Mike Raven Rhythm And Blues Show, has not seen the light of day since it was first broadcast.

So what's getting us at 6 Music all excited? Georgie Fame and The Blue Flames, and The Rolling Stones, recorded at the Camden Theatre on the 19th of March, 1964, that's what. Check out the quality of the recording, the wonderful introductions to the band members, and how young Mick Jagger sounds when he sings a cover of Route 66!

Was re-broadcast in November 1985 as part of the one-hour 'Stones at the Beeb' radio special on BBC Radio 1.

However, BBC radio broadcast only on AM back then - they didnt go to FM until about '87-88 or so. So i would guess this would be the first time its been broadcast on FM.

When this show was first broadcast back in 1964, it was done as part of some early 'stereo' experiment where they used the TV feed (cant recall the exact details, but its explained on the 1985 broadcast)

I dont think the Georgie Fame broadcast would have been broadcast since its first airing.

Would love to record it, but its on at a ridiculous time. Well worth tuning in for those of you in North America who would still be up. Its an outstanding performance, especially the one-off 'Cops and Robbers'.

No need to get up before the milkman. It'll be archived.  ;)

Listening to one of their recent broadcasts now - The Faces from 1972.

Nice...

Good man. If anyone's going to torrent it, please do the whole show. I know a few people looking for the Georgie Fame segment too. Many thanks.

is this the same recordings that have been bootlegged? Beet, Beat, Beat and all the BBC stuff.... My stuff is great quality, considering how old it is, and the BBC threw away alot of stuff from artists or reused tapes to record over....

Same 4 songs that have circulated for years.

Nonetheless, the Georgie Fame and post-Stones segment make it worth a listen...

At the 35-minute mark you can hear the Small Faces tearing-up 'Watcha Gonna Do About It' Better than the Stones, IMO. I have always really enjoyed 'Cops and Robbers' but the stereo 'Route 66' sounds a little tame to my ears, anyway.

Thanks, I really liked The Stones part, plus The Yardbirds.
