As we approach the Stones’ 50th anniversary (unbelievably, they formed in 1962, six months before the Cuban Missile Crisis, when the news was still black and white!) and contemplate the vast catalogue of music they have given the rock and roll generation isn’t it odd that radio still plays the same Rolling Stone greatest hits over and over?

Nothing against tracks like “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction,” “Brown Sugar,” “Start Me Up” and the rest but Jagger, Richards and the boys have wandered into some pretty interesting territory over the decades, especially during the more experimental late ’60s and early ‘70s years.

Here, then, are five rarely played Rolling Stones songs, and the selection will undoubtedly lead to some lively debate in the comments section below.

“Dead Flowers” was a product the Stones’ early ’70s flirtation with country music brought upon by Keith Richards’ friendship with ex-Byrd and Flying Burrito founder, Gram Parsons. Given that aside from country music, heroin was the chief common denominator between Parsons and Richards, the lyrics are suitably dark – “I’ll be in my basement room, with a needle and a spoon.” Listen for Mick Taylor’s twangfest and Clarence White impression.

“The Spider and the Fly,” a slow, mesmerizing blues number was the B-side of “Satisfaction” in the UK and an album cut on Out of Our Heads. It was recorded during their first U.S. tour at Chess studios.

“Sweet Black Angel” (a.k.a.”Black Angel”) from their 1972 album Exile on Main St. was the B-side to “Tumbling Dice.” The Stones rarely wandered into overtly political territory but this is a tough song about civil rights activist Angela Davis, who was up on murder charges at the time.

I've heard Dead Flowers on FM Classic Rock stations (100.3 DC, 100.7 BAL) as well as Lady Jane a few times.  Don't know if Sweet Black Angel would be airable.  But no doubt the 5 on the list wouldn't be TOO obscure for radio, and it would be nice for the public to get a new dose of Stones to tweak their interest beyond Start Me Up and Angie.

It's interesting that with the rerelease, people are touching on things only us die hards tend to talk about. Generally he's right, these songs are neglected. He's not saying they are never played or forgotten, but neglected (some of it is about radio tastes these days because Dead Flowers won't exactly capture garbage modern tastes). There are the obvious non FCC friendly tracks that will never air on US radio.  I honestly do not know the rules in other countries on language over the public airways.  The ones I would love to hear someone have the nerve to play:

I would love to hear some of the older songs on the radio more----"Not Fade Away", "The Last Time".....lots of 60's songs that never get played, unless it's a special program or some show that will allow me to request tunes.... ::)

Our golden oldies station here in Melbourne only seems to play Miss you, Satisfaction, YCAGWYW, Angie (which i hear at least 3 times a week), start me up & honky tonk women.

Another station that just changed format to classic rock (not classic hits, so no Abba!), plays some superb stuff. A few album tracks by the likes of Led Zep & The Who. They play Gimme shelter a fair bit. They dont abuse Start me up either. I heard Wild horses the otherday, and Bitch too.

I'd love to hear We love you and Time waits for no one. There has to be hundreds of tunes that have never been played.

I'd love some one to play Cocksucker Blues. That would be hilarious.

Classic rock stations spin Angie, Satisfaction, Brown Sugar and Miss You and mix it up with Zep's most overplayed songs, Sweet Home Alabama and The Boys Are Back In Town. There's some alternative stations I check now and then to get a taste for new stuff, but that's it.

Back to topic: Tumbling Dice, She's So Cold, Dead Flowers, Street Fighting Man and She Was Hot are tunes that had some main stream attention in the past, but don't get airtime at all these days. I'd like to see a change, but it's not gonna happen...

I remember She's So Cold and Emotional Rescue were huge on my local radio station when ER came out....I even remember Dance, Let Me Go played a few times.....and one dj loved Indian Girl so that was played a few times.
It was different back then....a Stones new album was huge...and they day of release, all the tracks were played.
Honky Tonk, Miss You, Start Me Up, a few others....that's all you're going to get today on mainstream oldies radio. I think it says more about radio than anything else though.

We had a GREAT oldies station up until a few months ago...they were independently owned, and had, and played, a catalog of over 2000 songs! Most stations play about 200....anyhoo, they're not as good now, but they DO play Satisfaction, Get Off Of My Cloud {heard that today}, Under My Thumb, 19th Nervous Breakdown, Ruby Tuesday, Let's Spend The Night Together, Jumpin' Jack Flash, Honky Tonk Women, You Can't Always Get What You Want {a LOT}, Brown Sugar...and occasionally we get Mother's Little Helper and Have You Seen Your Mother, Baby...etc. Other songs include Start Me Up, Miss You, Shattered, It's Only R&R, Beast of Burden, Ain't Too Proud To Beg.....special shows on classic rock stations might include Monkey Man or Can't You Hear Me Knocking. So, we get some songs. No rare songs...but some songs. :)
