Title: "Following The River"
Post by GotToRollMe on May 14th, 2010 at 11:18pm

Thank you so much for putting the new video up, Voodoo.  I can't remember being so affected by a Stones song in a long time. It's just beautiful. Mick brings such humanity to this song. I found myself totally swept away by his delivery. Absolutely gorgeous.

I'm with you (and Orson) all the way on this, GTRM.  Gorgeous just about covers it.

Bravo! I really enjoyed that song and I can't stop thinking about it after watching the video last night. Thanks for uploading it here!
People have complained about Micks vocals being too affected but I think this is just right. The backing singers are great too. Is it Lisa and Cindy Mizelle like on Plundered?

I really like it - though I'll admit: I am really struggling to view some of these tracks as 'Exile outtakes'. Rather, they seem like the 21st Century Stones with a classic twist.

Yes, I am going to need to take that attitude if I am going to enjoy it.   At the end of the day, it's new Stones music, of which I am very much in favor.   Commenting that Jagger in 2010 doesn't sound like 1972 is kind of . . . see sig line.

Everything I have heard thus far I have really liked. If re-working old, previously unreleased recordings is what it takes to get 'new' Stones music outh there, then so be it.

I love it too, like already mentioned a great exile gospel mood, I can tell the difference between Jagger then & now in vocals, it's better then anything that's out there now as far as new music goes.

I thought "Don't Call Me Up" when I first it, Zack ... Mick really slathers on it there. Still, Nicky Hopkins' playing is superb. It's actually a close cousin of Lennon's "Jealous Guy." Weird, that this should happen in 2010!

Bored me at first but it gets really good as it progresses. I love building sounds like this. I feel like it ended a bit too soon.

I honestly didn't think Mick had it in him like this anymore. Nicky's piano and the backing vocals are sublime, but Mick's vocal really grabs me. The video is perfect for the song, using symbolism and powerful images as illustrations of loss and hope. For once, he's not trying to pander to the young, contemporary audience. This is a mature song that speaks to their hard-core fanbase - people who are reaching a certain point in their lives where they're taking a good, hard look at their past and coming to terms with their future. As far as I'm concerned, this is "Exile"-worthy, which is saying a LOT. Good on ya, Mick!

The 1st chorus just lifts.

Brilliant track.

Gang...isn't this tune another version of Let it Loose?

Love the melody and what I guess is Hopkins playing..but Mick's enunciated lyrics- for lack of a better term- are out of place here, especially for Exile.  It is "growing" on me however...

Gonna have to give this another listen. Liked the piano playing. Reminded me of The Girl From Mill Valley. But micks vocals.....Reminded me of Streets of Love. :-[

I hear it too Bill, but I like it.
Must be difficult for Jagger to get an honest opinion from those that listened to the playback in the studio.
What's up with all the treble in his voice? Is he trying to sound young?

What a moody song. It's amazing to me that Jagger still has it in him.

Just came by this thread, was going to post the exact same thing!  Listen to the piano riff (it comes back a couple times) at :43!

On "Jealous Guy" he plays that little lick — a walk-down of sixths — and then goes into the E-minor. But "River" resolves to the G. Very similar, too, to what Nicky plays on "Loving Cup."

Hey: if a guy can't plagiarize himself, who can he plagiarize?!

The notes don't ring too similarly to Loving Cup, but I can hear it a little bit.  And what song better to borrow from than "Jealous Guy," one of the best piano ballads ever?  Nicky was the man.  Don't know if I'd want to hear Chuck try "Following the River," Nicky had that graceful touch.

The bit I'm thinking of from "Loving Cup" is right before the verse kicks in: "I'm the man on the mountain..." Check it out!
