Those rumors started shortly after the Beijing 2008 Games.

Yep, I heard this too and I believe it! The 50 year RS Anniversary and the Olympics ~ this sounds like a perfect storm! Two HUGE worldwide events, with the spotlight shining brightly on London! Lots of news-media coverage! One for the history books!

Let's hope they don't screw up the sound like they did at the Superbowl.

I should be excited for televised concerts but I'm always nervous. Am I alone here?

Makes me nervous too.  Remember SNL? The Superbowl and the Olympics should be different.  The Superbowl everything had to be up and down in 20 minutes.  The Olympics won't have that kind of time constraint.

I have a feeling the boys will make this gig if asked.  No better music act to represent London than the Stones.  Never will be.

They might be the greatest musical act we've ever produced, but they're hardly a symbol of youthful athleticism, lets face it - whilst it would be an obvious choice musically, it'd be an odd choice in other ways.

Ever since it was announced in July 2005 that we got the 2012 games, there's been numerous idle speculation about various superstar musical bunfights taking place, most of which are probably just lazy journalism. Pretty much every British act you can think of - even some defunct ones - has been touted as a possibility.

If their past touring habits are anything to go by, the chances of them being on tour in Europe in the same summer as the games (27 July - 12 August) are pretty decent, and probably the ONLY way it would happen. Then again, the Stones have NEVER done a tour which coincided with an Olympic Games taking place on the same continent in the same year - ever. (The only Olympic years in which they've ever toured were 1964,1972 and 1976 but they were on different continents each time). If they're going to tour in competition with an Olympic games, like the World Cup, theyre going to come in a distant second in terms of public interest.

I suppose an appearance could help ticket sales if they were struggling to put bums on seats.

Personally, I hope to fuck they're nowhere near it. Whether its the Superbowl, World Cup or Olympics, I hate seeing my favourite performers being reduced to the level of being merely side-show cabaret for sports events.

Gazza makes some VERY GOOD points, as always! So we will wait and see. My thoughts were if London is already filled with millions of tourists worldwide, than it would be a sure sell-out if the Stones played several nights at the O2 Dome or someplace else. People will already be in London so why not see the Stones 50th Anniversary Tour at the same time, 'killing 2 birds with 1 (Rolling) Stone!'

Thanks, although personally I think it might have the opposite effect. If people are spending a LOT of money on attending Olympic events, they're unlikely to have much money (or time) left to go to  rock concerts. Especially expensive ones.

Same as what happens when the Stones tour Europe if a World Cup is taking place. If they're playing in the same country where the tournament is taking place - even if its not at the same time, but during the same summer - they absolutely bomb (eg Italy 1990, France 1998 and Germany 2006). During the tournament itself, sales are also adversely affected for shows in countries who are playing in the finals.

If the Stones (or anyone else) are playing London (or the UK for that matter) DURING the Olympics and are hoping to sell tickets, their sales will be horrific. Even more so if they make the same mistake that they did in Europe in 2007 and leave the announcement too late (the Euro tour was only announced in late March instead of the previous November/December as is usually the case)

Whilst they might indeed play AT an Olympic event, any Stones concerts would probably take place either a few weeks before or after the games themselves.

Maybe a 50th anniversary gig on 12th July or a late August tour finale as usual???

:aimama :pukey

FFS.

They could enter the Olympics as their own team.

Mick with his preference for tall women will be competing in the pole vault, Keith could use his Fiji experience to perfect his technique in diving, Charlie would be a shoe-in for any equestrian events and Ronnie would be favourite for gold in the new discipline of Mixed Boxing.
