Title: If Another Album Comes Out...
Post by Boomy on Apr 8th, 2010 at 2:47pm
Ok, ok. I'm speculating that a future album will come out. Now, we all know Don Was will be the producer. He doesn't fight with them--he's merely the guy pushing the buttons and doing some grunt work for them.

Now, let's have fun. If not Don Was--then who? Who do you want to produce the album?

I want Jack White to produce it. This guy, I think, could get them back to something bluesy and rock--brock or ruse. Whatever you wanna call it. Bring the boys into Nashville and press this shit on some 180 gram vinyl for your listening pleasure. It doesn't have to be clean or glossed, but I'm sure it would be hard to convince Mick to release something with no shine.

Or we could just have Don Was produce it--and he will. Hell, maybe we'll get a cover of that Dinosaur song.

*Dream Over*

Don Was needs to be let go....
Its the ultimate afront to me as a diehard Stones fan that is his name will be listed on the Exile reissue....
I think we're stuck with him.

Brendon O'Brien has done good work with the Boss.

I ... disagree.

Overproduced, overcompressed. Snare is hyperexplosive—and I normally love a lot of pop from the snare drum. Too much filigree: harpsichords, hurdy-gurdy, orchestral bells, oh my!

I've harshed on Don Was before, but my feeling now is that he's fairly unobtrusive. How can one complain about "How Can I Stop"? Quite apart from the composition, that was an absolutely gorgeous recording. I'll take that sound over the Dust Brothers any day.

+1

But I don't blame the production for the overall meh of 'WOAD'.

ABB was a major fucking let down and I hope to god they don't waste their time on another shitty album like that but I do hope Universal keeps their Stonesy asses locked in the archives and they keep the unreleased shit coming

We agree again then! The problem there was generic songwriting, lyrics, hooks, etc. There was a deficit of inspiration there... Or maybe it's more accurate to say Bruce was "inspired" to travel even farther down a road that he had already dead-ended on "Magic."

+1, just not worth it, either for them or for us, apart from the excitement.

Rick Rubin producing, Don Was Mixing and Bob Ludwig mastering.... all will be well if Mick and Keith write 10 or 12 songs from the heart... I know they can do it, it's just a matter of doing it... it doesn't matter, if the don't give a fuck.

Rubin will never be employed by Jagger again.  I doubt he'd even want to, if he was asked.
Neither of them enjoyed each other's input into 'Wandering Spirit' too much, even though the results were more satisfactory than any other Jagger solo album (although thats not saying an awful lot)
The thought of Keith's reaction to such a bossy producer is enough to make me shiver.

I'm not convinced O'Brien would be a great solution either.

Jack White III.

Like I said above, I'm basically at peace with Was. He's only as good, or bad, as the Glimmer Twins themselves. If Mick wants to blather on about young cruel bitches, partying, getting juiced, cocks, tits, and booty, Don Was will not stop him. If Mick wants to sing about romantic regrets and the existential dissatisfaction of being rich, famous, and well-traveled, similarly, Don Was will not stop him.

I don't think Keith is that much interested in writing rock music anymore. I think he'd be happy retreading Hoagy Carmichael and Hank Williams tunes—and would do so fabulously well. Critics and fans alike would love it. But the only effort he seems willing to expend anymore is to dye his hair and tag along with Jagger-Cohl Globetrotters, Inc.

Input from outsiders is no magic bullet. How many au courant producers and session monkeys has Jagger worked with over the last 30 years? Have the results been radically different?

The Stones are what the Stones are. I enjoy them more than I don't.

I don't believe a new album will ever be released.

I wouldn't be surprised either, don't they owe one to Universal though ?

I think Mick and Keith could stay busy tinkering with the old stuff like they just did with Exile. That stuff was not deemed good enough at the time but it still miles better than anything they've come up with since...well dunno really, although B2B was more inspired overall for some reason.

Sad too, because I think not liking or having a tense relationship in the studio, would be a good thing... competition and ego clashes, can make a good recording session.... although, it can also wear people down and send them into therapy and result in recordings no one hears outside a small circle... this was an "if" so I just gave my ideal candidates.

:smilestu I could see Jack White in the production chair... they need a good kick up the arse, stop being legends. The need to be hungry again. How about going back to the basics or better yet a all country album or funk album something besides the same tried and true formula..shake it up.

People have been asking for that for almost 20 years. Closest we got to something truly out-of-the-box was "Stripped," and, arriving as it did in the MTV "Unplugged" era, even that was a kind of me-too effort.

Gawd you're miserable beggars sometimes.
There's barely a Stones song that at one time or other I haven't felt charmingly fitted a musey or botty-moving mood.

It was great. I wish I could see the Strokes in such a venue--instead I'll settle for Lollapalooza.

Got a picture with him and he signed my vinyl "Phrazes for the Young" (er, and my cd copy, too).

For all intents and purposes, a new album—well, maybe just an EP—is coming out, along with "Exile" :)

Time for a change of supporting cast:  No more Leavell or Was, whatever their past contributions.

If I could, I'd get them a bass player that plays it like it's a guitar, not a tool for making a subwoofer vibrate.  Yeesh, how debilitating that sounds live.

I'd also like them to find a songwriter who can write ten tunes as smart as those on "She's the Boss."

:warhorse

"We piss anywhere?"  I piss on ABB.  What does it say about a record when the only song you ever want to hear again - "Streets of Love" - is a mash-up of "Out of Tears" and the falsetto from "Fool to Cry?"

Yes ABB hasn't aged well has it, sounded ok out of the gate, but just so dull.

I think they'll be ok if they can get a guitar player to add some soul to the music like they just got Taylor to do on "Plundered my Soul", Wachtel could help too, like he did on B2B.

Hey newbie, I'm with you on this one!

It doesnt matter to me who the producer is, I'm HAPPY to hear just about every new Stones song! There is a song for every mood.

Apparently not. Whilst theyve signed a 5-year deal with the label, there's no obligation to deliver a fixed number of new albums.

i'm of the opposite camp, the good tunes, about ten, i think have really aged well... and as far as some of the supporting cast, they are still the same, not liked less or more and that too, in its own way... is good.
