Title: Your Best Stones Holy Shit Moment Post by sweetcharmedlife on Apr 2nd, 2010 at 9:42pm
I was thinking about this last week when I went to McCartney and he pulled out a couple of great nuggets I didn't expect. Now relate that to a Stones concert you've been too. Out of nowhere they play a great nugget you didn't expect to hear and go holy shit, that was awesome. For me, it always starts with the night of holy shit moments. Opening night No Security tour in Oakland in the front row. From Moonlight Mile to Some Girls to Undercover. Best setlist ever. But me and the buddy I went with were talking before the show and said what's the one song they will never do. Somehow we both agreed it was You Got The Silver. Well Keith steps to the mic and says something like "I haven't done this one since I wrote it" and starts YGTS. Me and my buddy go nuts. Everybody looks at us like we are,not recognizing the song. My other great holy shit moment was on the first leg of the ABB tour at Pac Bell in San Francisco. Me and a friend had decent seats on the field. Good show, then they launch into Sweet Virginia. A song I've always loved and didn't expect. My buddy still gives me shit about it. I just tell him,you don't understand. It was Sweet Virginia.

I'll be damned SCL.
The first song that came to my mind was "You Got the Silver" on No Security. Ft Lauderdale, March 5th 1999. Good thread! ;) LJ. ps. I reacted like a goddamn fool too!!!!!!!!!! Some people with me just stood and shook their heads. I stood and cried. |

I wish I didn't read setlists and that I didn't know which guitars are for which songs. I don't think I've ever been suprised by a song selection.

I never expected to hear Harlem Shuffle played live and they did it in Atlantic City, I think it was 1989. It was a complete surprise. MICK was grooving to Shake a tail feather baby and I still dont know what that means, is it a scarf made of feathers?

I got the biggest Holy Shit moment on may 21st, 1990 when they took the stage with Start Me Up. First Stones gig I saw..it was a magical moment. Basically I turned into a Stones freak then and there. I had arena tickets and a bunch of bikers I knew made sure me and my mate had excellent spots somewhere in the front.
In 1995 they did some great sets in the Netherlands and by then I was fortunate enough to buy tickets for all the shows (save the Paradiso ones. I don't want to talk about it). The extra gigs the Stones did in Rotterdam at the end of the summer had outrageous sets. I have fond memories of Shine A Light. 1998: the Amsterdam Arena is a horror soundwise, but it was the first time my future wife tagged along. She really wanted to hear Memory Motel. I thought it was impossible (I wasn't online back then), so when they played it we were amazed. She was lucky btw: on a different night the song got butchered by Dave Matthews. 2003: club gig in Utrecht for 50 euro's. Nuff Said. 2006: after a great time during the Cologne show, my wife and I decided to get some tickets for the Amsterdam Arena. Sounded better than during Licks, but they played Sway. I had promised myself to propose if they did that, so it's a good thing she agreed. 2007: in Nijmegen we were flushed by a storm first, but when the Stones came out they gave a kick arse show with Sweet Virginia as the ultimate highlight. |

Not fade Away as the opener in DC.
No internet to check the set lists. First show of the tour so we had no idea what was coming. The way they opened that show - not knowing what to expect. Still makes me tingle. 2000 Light Years during Steel Wheels was a huge surprise. Never expected that. No Expectations in Atlanta in '97 was impressive. She Was Hot in Chicago on that cold night! God there has been a few... |

Another Holy Shit moment was at Giants Stadium Sept 2005. My daughter was with me, we had decent floor seats. So I asked her what song she would like to hear most, and my daughter says her favorite song is HEARTBREAKER. I told her no way in hell, no chance. So that night the STONES played it, which was really cool, she got to hear her favorite song! That was a shocker.

Sad to say, but I haven't had that moment yet. I think the only thing that would do it, would be to see Mick Taylor as a Stone again.
I've had too many "oh shit, not this shit again" moments. :( |

'I Got The Blues' played at a public concert for the first time ever in Hartford in 1999 (they'd only played it before at the Marquee TV special in '71)
There havent been THAT many mega-surprises to be honest. Even in the pre-internet era (which for me was every show I saw before 1998) I usually had a good idea of what they were playing by the time I got to see them perform. The song choices at Shepherds Bush featured a lot of off the wall choices - but a security lady had showed me the setlist just before the show began and I couldnt resist taking a peek. 'Angie' at Slane in '82 was one I remember as being a big surprise and a pleasant one as it was the name of my girlfriend at the time. 'No Expectations' in Lisbon with Ana Moura was somewhat out of the blue as well, as was 'Thru and Thru's live debut at MSG in 2002. I suppose I should say though that the biggest 'what the fuck?' moments were Keith singing an a cappella version of 'Loch Lomond' in Glasgow in September 2003 (quickly followed by the crowd joining in and then going nuts), and then following it six days later in Dublin with 'Its A Long Way To Tipperary'...... BUT.. for sheer goose-bump factor, nothing will top that moment at Ronnie's Drury Lane show in March 2005, when he said 'If you wanna dance - you'll need a good teacher', hit the intro to 'Dance' and then from stage left out strutted Mick Jagger ... Even now five years later, the roar from the crowd on the recording of this show still makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up. Every time. |

Easy: Brown Sugar, Giants Stadium, Sept '02.
My first show and their first song of the setlist. My first Stones live moment. |

Title: Re: Your Best Stones Holy Shit Moment Post by homesickjameswilliamson on Apr 3rd, 2010 at 4:18pm Only seen them once, but it was the first 20mins of the gig. I saw them at Slane in 2007 on ABB and start me up was the opener. It was just amazing, i'd never seen such a spectacle and i can still remember keith strutting out nad hearing the really metallic sounding chords and jagger. But the 'holy shit' moment was the first 20mins of the gig i just kept saying to myself 'that cant be keith' 'that can't be mick' - it seemed impossible that i could be seeing them in front of me - only other gig i had that at was seeing the stooges for the first time in montreux 2006. i couldnt believe i was seeing them. another holy shit moment at stones was them playing dead flowers; not for any great affection for the song, which i think is a good song from one of my favourite albums, but it just seemed to come from nowhere, i didnt expect it - and maybe another was keith singing i wanna hold you, that was pretty cool |

One more I HAVE to add....First show EVER...Buffalo, 1975.
Lotus Stage is closed. House lights go down. The sound of Keith's opening chords to Honky Tonk W. Lotus begins to open and Jagger is perched atop one of the petals. The thought of hit makes me lightheaded. SIGH LJ. |

All down the line in Dubendorf '06 was a complete surprise, and it totally rocked. But the real holy shit moment was the b-stage set. I was right by the rail, with no one in front of me, Keith looking straight at me, playing Get off of my cloud. It was unreal.
Listening to the boot of the show quite often. It was a damn good show! |

Two near-orgasmic, deceptively simple moments come to mind; Mick jumping HIGH in perfect sync with the first Charlie bish-bash in March 23rd, 1999's 'Midnight Rambler' in Boston....PERFECT, and when Keith passed inches in front of me in January 2006 on the floor in Boston, right in front of the B-stage....it was also nice sitting IN FRONT of Janet and LeToya in Sunrise, FLA back in February 2006...

"Ruby Tuesday," at Toronto CNE, September 1989. I knew it was coming, but I got involved in the show and forgot to predict where. I didn't expect how perfectly they would pull it off, and what an emotional effect it would have on the audience - tears all 'round.

Wow! My Holy Shit moment was very similar to yours Jizzy. I had tickets to the 1981 show in Atlanta at the Fox Theater. This show is still considered one of the best Stones' shows ever, and I was lucky enough to get a ticket through a friend of a friend. Anyway when we arrived at our seats and they were covered up by the sound board! The usher had all of us wait at the top of the aisle, and then she marched us all down to the 6th,7th, and 8th rows! I got front and center on the 6th row, and to this day I have never seen the Stones so on fire as they were that night. Even Keith has talked about that show as one that he really felt that the band was cooking, and boy were they. I've never been the same since! Stones fans are kind of like junkies in that respect. We keep on trying to chase that same buzz that we had the first time. I have tried to get that buzz dozens of times since that October night in 1981, and while I have never gotten the same high that I got that night, they have all been beautiful buzzes. Riffy |

Question for LJ or Gimmekeef or anyone else at the 75 Aud show. I seem to recall the flat lotus and Mick popping up through the hole in the stage during HTW, but my memory is very hazy and I was a bit medicated at the time. He was definitely wearing the striped white PJs with a leather jacket and it remains to this day the best show I have ever seen including the Toronto show and Rich Stadium the same year. The 'Ooo is December are a close second.
Are there records as to which stage was in which city or any Buffalo photos? |

First time I seen The Stones, I was at the first show, looking back now it seemed like such a long time ago, it was so hot that night, Mick threw buckets of water into the crowd, it was chaos, people rushing the stage, chicks sitting on guys shoulders, I got 4 grey seats & sold them for a ground floor, $35 which was a lot in those days ('72) I still got the ticket stub, I posted on here several times.

Then, during "Rambler" and "Worried About You" at the first MSG show on the Bigger Bang tour. But seeing Keith do "You've Got The Silver" was a dream come true. And I got to see it several times during Bigger Bang. I never thought I'd see them do that one. There were also moments in Lisbon, Madrid, and Atlantic City that took my breath away. Great story's everybody. Enjoying them a lot. Please keep them coming. This may not qualify as a holy shit moment and I'm not sure if I've mentioned on here before. But a good story I think. It was the Licks tour. My brother and his wife bought a ticket for me at Pac Bell Park. Since it was close to my birthday. Nov. 9,2002. We walk into the place and take are seats with no problem. I'm enjoying a solid 2-3 songs of Sheryl Crow. Then somebody walks up and says your in our seat. Well we check our tix and are convinced we are in the right seats. So an usher comes down and looks at our tix. Well we had the right seats, but the wrong night. Turns out,we had tickets for the night before. They said you can't stay in these seats, but are welcome to walk around and stand wherever is possible. Amazing they didn't kick us out and considering this was my birthday present. We walked around for a few minutes while I fumed and cursed out my brother. But between him and his wife. They are equal parts idiot and genius. My sister in-law says that the head of security is the brother of one of her girlfriends. We go to security and somehow convince them to call the head of stadium security. They do get a hold of him and he does come up to meet us. He laughs at our predicament, then takes us down to his office underneath the stadium. He tells his staff our predicament. They all get a good laugh at us. But,then they pull out seating chart. Look at it and say, well their are some sections that weren't filled after they put the stage up. So we went from semi-decent left field seats. To seats on the field. Which turnned out to be very near the B-Stage....And when they played Let it Bleed on the B-Stage. Your's truly was a very happy camper. :warhorse

I say all 16 shows I have seen were holy shit moments. To see them right before my eyes has always blown me away. But I guess the top moment was during the Bridges To Babylon tour back in '97. The Stones had played 4 nights in Oakland and I had gone to all four shows. On the final night I had second row and had had a few beverages and when Keith finished playing "All About You" he thanked the crowd and said "God bless you all." I yelled back "God bless you Keith!!!!!" He looked right at me and pointed. Very cool moment I will always remember that. I've often wondered if there is a recording of that show that picked my yell up or perhaps a video.

I love the memory of being an innocent 7 year old @ RFK for the opening night of the '94 Voodoo Lounge tour - looking back at the setlist now, I don't know if I understood the magnitude of "Undercover" or "Can't Get Next To You" - I was just enjoying whatever they played. Totally blown away by the "Not Fade Away" opener. But the true holy shit moment was probably the closer, JJF, where I didn't care if it was 7+ minutes (like we all do on boots!), I never wanted it to end.

To wake up and found yourself in the middle of the Rolling Stones show (MSG 2002) Probably the first thing I said was "Holy Shit... I missed it" so it was another "Holy shit moment" for me
Of course the first time I saw them was a "holy shit moment" and let me tell ya, it was too the first time I met regulars in Hartford in March 1999 |

Got some cool shots of the back of his dads head though. |

I had a similar experience at the Mick Taylor show at the 100 Club, London, between the two Stones shows in 2003. I know Gazza was there, and I'm sure other R.O. regulars, but that was before I was a regular poster on the boards. |

'81 Hampton on Keith's Birthday. First time I saw them. We had won the chance to purchase tix on the radio and drove 5 hours up from Chapel Hill, NC where I was a senior in HS. We got there about 1pm thinking we needed to be early and they didn't even let people into the lot until 5! There was snow on the ground and it was festival seating, so when they opened the gates, we all ran for the coliseum. With having to sit through George Thorogood, we were more than ready for the boys to take the stage. We had been partying pretty heavily and people were passing out around us from the heat. But so many holy shit moments: Waiting on a friend, CAGWYW, Honky Tonk, Little T and A, etc. Seeing all the classics from dead center 30 feet from the stage was unbelievable not to mention seeing Mick run all the way around the front row with a mic in his hands signing Let Me Go, Ronnie hanging off a tower or flipping a cig into his mouth, Ian playing piano, and lastly, Keith almost killing the fan who ran across the stage to steal Mick's pink Fedora...while the balloons came down and obscured my view...
Oh and the Bridges Tour watching Keith run across the stage to Chuck's piano and watch him for a minute and then bang out a goddamn beautiful riff on the keys with one hand to compliment what Chuck was playing, all in time to the song...stil can't believe it! |

OK my first holy shit moment was my first Stones concert at MSG July 26, 1972. My friend Gail's older brother was going to the show and he had 2 extra tickets. I asked my dad if I could go and he said NO. YOU ARE TOO YOUNG! So of course I disobeyed and we went to The Garden to see the STONES! We had 2nd row center seats, and we stood on top of our chairs during the entire show screaming, dancing and going nuts! I fell totally in love with the 2 MICK's! The show was awesome! It was MICK's birthday that night, and at the end of the show they wheeled out a big cake and several bottles of whisky and champagne. MICK shakes up a bottle of champagne and sprays it into the audience, spraying me and Gail until we were completely soaked! MICK was laughing at us, took a drink out of the bottle and sprayed us again. We were laughing too but when I got home my dad smelled the liquor on me and started yelling at me for drinking! So I told him it was MICK JAGGER's chamagne, and he was actually relieved that I wasnt drunk so he forgave me for going to MSG. That's the night I fell in love with MICK JAGGER. I bought the Sticky Fingers album and would lie in my bed zipping and unzipping the cover imagining MICK was in bed with me. That started my MICK fantasies which carried me through a lifetime. I only found out a few years ago it was not MICK in the tighty-whities, but Andy Worhol's protege!
