Hi there, new here but old lurker I like this board. I want to make a new message board (not about the Rolling Stones or other band but for friends) and I read in another board that this and all other Rolling Stones boards don't pay fees and run on free servers. Is this true? How can I make a new one for free? Please let me know TIA

Come on!! Nothing is free in this world… of course we pay, we have paid since March 1999 with no stops in between!

From July 1998 to March 1999 we were only a message board located in a free server (hosted by “insidetheweb.com”) then we started the website paying both, hosting and domain name. I’m sure all other boards pay too, for example:

Shidoobee pays two domains (shidoobee.com and stonesdoug.com) both directing to a message board located in the yuku.com hosting. The ad-supported version of Yuku is free but Stonesdoug pays an ad-free message board so it’s not located on a free server.

Both, IORR and Rocks Off pay domain and website hosting, the message boards are located in their own server so their message boards are part of the hosting and it’s not free.

Nowadays hosting services are cheaper than in the past

Rocks Off is paid by us, the unholy trinity, and we have never ever asked for money to the regulars, IORR the same but they got money from their GREAT fanzine, as far as I remember Stonesdoug get some help from the regulars but I’m not sure at all, but I’m sure he pays.

Undercover the oldest Rolling Stones on-line community, active since 1992 pays too, they pay the domain name and hosting of the e-mail list.

In short: We all pay Sex driver, so look for hosting services, pay and start it up otherwise start with an ad-supported message board and then decide if you go to the add-free paid hosting or remain with ads.

Thank you, but I know nothing is free and this point should be made every once in awhile.

Whoever said that clearly isn't in a position to know what the situation is for the board owners in question and have been misinformed - or else they've just made that up.

i appreciate this place too...
on a sidenote, keno was having a hard time... i think things are ok... paying out of pocket for a bunch of loonies to post, is pretty crazy, you guys deserve an award... or at least some swag or better tix to shows.

Now you are not just a "lurker" Sex Driver, ....your a participator.  Gazza and Voodoo have answered your questions directly concerning whether or not this message board is ran on free servers. Free hosting IS possible but your either obligated to many adds that will run on your website/messageboard, will have very low allowable bandwidth, low disc space capacity ..or all three as Voodoo stated. There's none of that here :) and we are all very, very grateful.

Rocks Off is unique as you may of noticed. Everyone has their own personality here. As well, there are several very well educated folks here concerning The Rolling Stones and music in general. I highly recommend this message board to Stones fans I meet (and I don't recommend just any website) so I will recommend it to you as well.

Rocks Off has all the key quality ingredients that the other websites have. Mind you, the members here are sort of "smart arses" at times (you have to be in order to be Rocks Off folk ...not to worry... it's all in a nights posting :)) but they are definitely true Stones/music followers.

As well to add to the websites unique way ...the admins of the website refuse money. They do it for the love of The Stones and music in general and we're grateful at just how much they have done in creating and maintaining this place.

To add to the special flavor of this message board One of the website's admins gets elated when common board members sometimes tell him F-U.... for reasons unknown...
