Although many people have speculated he was homosexual, Martin said he did not come out earlier because he was "seduced by fear and insecurity." Martin said he began writing his memoirs a few months ago and he knew it would be a "tool that was going to help me free myself from things I was carrying within me for a long time. Things that were too heavy for me to keep inside." He said the birth of his two sons made him realize he wanted to make the news that he is gay public. "To keep living as I did up until today would be to indirectly diminish the glow that my kids where born with. Enough is enough. This has to change," he wrote. In 2008, Martin had a baby with a surrogate mother. "The word happiness takes on a new meaning for me as of today," Martin said in his statement. Martin is a Spanish singer, but is known for his English hits such as Living La Vida Loca, She Bangs and Nobody Wants to be Lonley, a duet with Christina Aguilera. Celebrity blogger Perez Hilton, who is also gay, celebrated the news by publishing Martin's statement with a simple, "Yes! We're very happy for you, Ricky." Hilton also took to Twitter with the news. "Hopefully Ricky Martin will inspire other celebrities to come out too," he tweeted. "So proud of you!" |

Has it ever occurred to you all that these are all Americans who live in America and therefore have fear of coming out of the closet? I can't say I blame them. After all American money has "IN GOD WE TRUST" printed all over it. And you all know how fervently religious people tend to think about homosexuals: that it's a sin, that the bible says...etc blahblah.... And you also tend to go all "Oh My Gaaawwwd!" when anyone gets caught philandering or it emerges that they occasionally bat for the wrong team, shock-horror!, you not only expect but also categorily DEMAND squeaky-clean people in public life, which humans of course seldom are.
Happily, I live in a country where one of our pound bills has a picture of Darwin on it, and if there's anything we really trust in, then it is the fact that it will rain again any minute. Things are a bit more laid back about what you believe in or in attitudes to homosexuals or any other type of excentricity, it's an English thing "Live and let live" although of course we too have religious/racial/homosexual hatred around, bigots aren't an American monopoly by far, but the general attitude of educated people to life and its liberties is more laid back. It's an Old World philosophy. Look at France: President and his wife have affairs, is this a big political scandal? No, the French just understand that after a year the thrill is gone. Fini! Look at the Spaniards: King Juan Carlos used to be a monumental philanderer and flirt in his younger years and disappear God knows where on his motorbike, and it wasn't even commented upon in the press. Americans invented the obsession of what the general public is entitled to know and the world ain't a better place for it. I practically don't care for celebrities at all, nor for whom they fuck or not. It's their business. Some things in life ought to stay private, full stop. |

When I was about 15, and got into dressing punk, I used to get teased alot. One day a group of jocks came after me, calling me a faggot and tried beating me up. Wasn't too bad, b/c I learned to carry chains and rocks, so I got away relatively unscathed. Fast forward a few years, I'm at a party, and I'm getting drunk, and run into one of the jocks... I'm all defensive at first, ready to fight, and he apologizes... I run into him later that night, and he comes onto me... turns out he was gay. At first i was pissed, and he was really surprised I wasn't gay, and I could tell he was ashamed, that I now, knew he was gay... I told him it was cool, I didn't care ect... but I realized, how much it must've sucked for him, being into guys, having to hide it and all that... He was attracted to me, and just a year earlier had to bully me in front of his friends... i'm just so glad I know how and what i am, and don't have to hide it... i think it can be even more difficult for girls who are lasbians, and especially if they are very big or butch... Well, thanks for all that, pdog, but I assure you that I have no prejudices or preconceptions whatsoever about whatever makes other people tick sexually, it's their own business whatever they like. I'm just curious, nothing more nothing less. I count 7 gay men and only 4 lesbian women amongst my fairly close friends. Occasionally I have asked the gay men stuff about sexuality, promiscuity, their attitude towards their partner sleeping with other men, jealousy, difference between love and getting laid etc, I'm fairly open with them and I'd like to think that I have never offended them with any of my questions. The women, however, I find much harder to speak to, and the reason I have never asked them is exactly NOT wanting to offend them, because both couples have exactly that role-play I was telling you about. So, simply put, I feel a lot more comfortable asking you, a stranger/friend on a chatboard, than I would feel asking them. And I certainly did not mean to upset you with anything I said, the Hulk/Olive thing is to ellucidate what I mean, absolutely no offence intended and if caused then I apologise unreservedly.
Interesting story with the chap that first beat you up and then came on to you... I'm sure you're right, a lot of people hate the part they recognise in themselves and fear. It's a lot easier beating the shit out of someone else than facing your own fears. Like the father of the boy in "American Beauty", one of my favourite movies... |

Don't get me wrong, pdog : the gay women that I know DO talk very graphically and very comfortably about their sex-life and about how they feel for one another and they sometimes open up very sincerely about all sorts of intimate aspects of being gay, like having or not having children, but they NEVER voluntarily talk about WHY, despite them being so unconventional and excentric and artistic and uniquely creative people, they still "carbon-copy" a very conventional heterosexual role-play-model and take it to such an extreme that it becomes a clichee. They sometimes exhibit a more extreme behaviour than, let's say, a macho footballer and his very girlie girl-friend. THAT'S what I always wonder about but somehow really never feel comfortable asking, I simply see it as a line that I mustn't cross. That's why I feel more at ease asking you than asking them. Do I make myself clear now?
And yes, you are absolutely right about how the difference in structure of a gay male in contrast to a gay female relationship works. But, beyond that, most of the gay men that I know find it totally normal to sleep around (protected) with other men when they are travelling, and vice-versa, but when they are both "in town" , then they are perfectly faithful to one another. Which is another conundrum to me, I just cannot see how you could ever compartmentalise your feelings to such an extent that you're not pissed off at your partner for having slept around just because he was away. Which is probably down to how female brains are wired as opposed to male ones , I don't know. Anyway, if you don't know the answer to my question either, then that's perfectly ok. I know Voo I am so disgusted with the catholic church right now on one side all about wanting children and at the same time virtually saying okay to allow children to be molested? I know a few guys that are gay that were born gay and had preferences from the beginning and then I know some gay guys and gay girls that are gay and were molested when they were children. My close friend growing up was molested by a babysitter (male) and her father and she is a lesbian. I don't say it is bad to be who you are but it is a harder life in many ways. people dont' acknowledge your anniversary for instance. You have a lot of gay guys who are into some weird sex that has led to a murder rap due to an injection of an unwilling victim by one friend of mine and aids in another. its not okay to fuck with children. they need to be allowed to grow in their own way and be protected and nurtured by the adults in their world.
