Title: Who can recommend me some Jazz singers?
Post by Holden on Mar 29th, 2010 at 8:32am
I've been in a jazz phase the last few days. So far I've listened to Nat King Cole, Judy Garland, Frank Sinatra (don't like him) and Norah Jones. Can anyone recommend me some more singers like that? This is a whole new genre for me so I'm really excited about it! Thanks!

Hey, Holden-- Take a listen to my favorite female singer: Ella Fitzgerald.
Voice like honey.

My absolute favorite...

...but Ella is incomparable...

...I always loved Jimmy Rushing's stuff with Count Basie...

For contemporary stuff, Harry Connick Jr has done some decent
work, but he's nowhere near the level of the above artists.

I love Henry "red" Allen. Great trumpet player but also a great singer.  I like the stuff from the end of his career. Say 1955 on.  When he played with a quartet.

I also like Mable Scott.

Willie Mabon also.

Trying give  you a few of the non obvious ones.

Ella is sublime, pure....you don't need anyone else.
There is some great footage of Ella with Sinatra, just riffing off each other.....excellent.

Dinah Washington,  Bessie Smith, Casandra Wilson, Nina Simone.

Someone who I think may be close to the Louis Armstrong sound is Kermit Washington. He's New Orleans current favourite son. I love Kermit Washington, a great guy as well!

About 15 years ago, I became infatuated with this genre - and it was totally new for me too. Growing up with pop and rock and roll, you tend to have very narrow perimeters and this music was like an entire world of discovery. Ella just blew me away with that voice though - no frills, no affectation, no melodrama, just an exquisite voice taking you to an exquisite place and I wondered why it took me so long to discover her. She is an American treasure.

Tim Ries ~ If you can catch his solo act he is all jazz!

Thanks for the suggestions guys! I've gots some explorin' to do. And I actually didn't like Tim Ries' solo project that much. Wild Horses with Norah Jones is fantastic, and I love the saxophone over Keith's guitar in Honky Tonk women but that's about it.

I watched Catch me if you can the other week, which is what got me interested in this music. It's a great movie if you haven't seen it. It really takes you back in time.

Amazing...that's for sure! Who is sitting on the extreme left in the video? I know the Rev. is there, and Pete S., and Donovan...who's the other guy? At first, for just a sec, I seriously thought it was Brian Jones!

Agreed! I could probably get by with just those three artists for the rest of my life if i had to. But calling Hank or the Wolf "jazz" is a criminal misclassification!

That's not howe I took it.  I understood it to mean that you'd have jazz, country and blues covered, and that that would do in a pinch.  As for jazz singers, no one mentioned Louis Armstrong.  Satchmo may have been better with his cornet than without it, but his voice is singular.

I, too, would have named Ella Fitzgerald.  Since I missed that opportunity, I'll tell this story.  Ella received her honorary degree from Harvard the same time that I got my law degree.  I like to say I graduated with Ella Fitzgerald (and Stephen Hawking).

Not sure what is more impressive: the Harvard part or the Ella part.
Both.....
